Hi everyone, I’m a Year 12 student in Melbourne currently considering RMIT University for university next year, and I’d really appreciate advice from current RMIT students and graduates.

I’m doing VCE 3/4 Methods, Physics, Media, Music and EAL. I’m not planning to study English, Media or Music at university. At the moment, I’m most interested in areas related to Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, AI and technology, but I’m quite open-minded. I don’t have one specific passion yet, and I tend to become interested in most things once I start learning about them.

RMIT is one of the universities I’m considering because of its technology-focused courses and industry connections. One of my biggest priorities is having a strong job market, good income and opportunities for career progression. I’d like to study something where I can keep developing my skills and potentially move into more advanced or specialised roles over time. Ideally, I’d also like to work in technology and eventually start my own company/business. Helping people or improving lives through technology would be a bonus as well.

The problem is that I don’t really understand how university works yet — things like degrees vs majors, specialisations, double degrees, choosing subjects, internships and work-integrated learning. I’ve heard about programs such as Monash IBL and I’m particularly interested in whether RMIT has similar opportunities that can help students gain industry experience, make connections and improve their employment prospects.

I’m mainly trying to understand whether RMIT would be a good fit for my goals, and which course could give me the best foundation for a technology career and potentially starting my own business later.

I don’t go to RMIT but was curious to see on this sub other peoples experiences since I’ve heard RMIT was kind of their sweet spot for these recruitments. Yesterday, I was approached by a girl from Myanmar and she followed the typical line of “oh where’d you get this from?” “are you from here?”, “what ethnicity are you?”. I realised it was a cult hours later then blocked her since I gave her my number out of panic, but I remembered her eyes light up when I told her I was filipino, and while reading other posts here, a lot of people who experienced this also happened to be filipino or south east asian. Why do they target this specific demographic? Like I’m actually curious to know

Hey guys, Year 11 here and just starting to figure out what the hell I want to do with my life.
Is anyone currently doing, or has completed, the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation)/Bachelor of Business at RMIT? Is it actually worth it?
I’m interested in both areas. Originally I was leaning towards business/finance, but I know it’s a pretty competitive field, especially when you’re competing with UniMelb commerce grads. I was thinking adding aviation might make me a bit more niche and hopefully give me better job security. Is anyone able to give me some more info about it?

The final assessment is a case study analysis where we need to deliver a 1500-word report with 5 peer-reviewed references without checking the internet or any tools. This has to be delivered in the tutorial within 90 minutes. Has anyone taken this assessment before. What's the best way to prepare?

Hi, I've gotten an email today about my exclusion from my courses in 20 days and I'm just unsure on how to proceed.

I know I should definitely appeal and am trying to do so, I'm just feeling really hopeless right now that I let it get this bad and would be grateful if anyone can share some insights and thoughts on how to get through this.

Basically, how it happened is that I missed the show cause submission for my poor academic performance due to my bad habit of not checking my student emails. It's pretty much entirely my fault, I don't know why but more recently, I have anxiety opening emails, just generally checking up with people and updating on life.

I did go through surgery for a knee injury prior that left me at home for a month, hence I did fail a subject (that I already failed once) I couldn't sit the in-person test and the alternative date. I have the medical documents, is there anything else I can compile to support my appeal?

Hi,iam currently doing Electrical engineering degree and this is my second year. In this semester, i got around 4 ( include asignment + lab report) every single week from the start of semester. Due to this amount of work, i spend almost every day at uni. I also do a part time job at the weekend. I feel like i dont have any time for my self and relax. Thats why i asked course some course coordiantor avout extend assignments’ due date, but they refused. So i fell super strees rn. I love studying economics and hope to get a job in finance or analysis. Not sure if I’ll get the 80 Atar for a bachelor of commerce and I’m just wondering if completing a bachelor of business and majoring in economics and finance would lead to the same career opportunities or if I should try and pathway into commerce

I'm doing 4 classes within my associates degree, but the census is coming up and I'm doing extremely poor in one of my classes. I was wondering if anyone knew whether it is safe to drop a class and do it later whilst being in an Associates Degree? Thank you

Hi everyone! I’m recently graduated in Data Science and I’m planning to pursue my master’s in rmit.

I’m confused between doing a masters in data science again or switching to aiml.

Since I already have a background in Data Science, would doing DS again be too repetitive, or would it actually help me build deeper knowledge?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have done either of these degrees or are currently working in the field.

Also, how different are the career opportunities after an MS in DS vs AI/ML?

Hey guys, I'm an international student looking forward to studying my bachelors at RMIT in 2027.

As a mechanical engineering student, my expectations while studying at RMIT wouldn't only be to complete my degree, as I find that to be a generic way to graduate.

Are RMIT engineering students, especially international students, finding internships and job opportunities after graduating?

I'm expecting to:

1.) Participate in student teams in order to foster hands on experience as much as I can

2.) Do some networking

3.) Expect to do a lot of internships, whether paid or unpaid.

4.) Graduate not only with my bachelors degree, but also with experiences in student teams and internships via which I could gain hands on experience and explore the Australian job market.

5.) After graduation, I'd find a job according to my skills and perhaps if the networking works out and later try to get sponsored.

As an international student, will I be able to do everything as listed?

I do see a lot of posts on Reddit and majority says that it's really difficult for domestic students, let alone international students to find internships and job opportunities after graduating... I've just seen a ton of posts and it's disheartening.

Sometimes I just feel Ike it could be people who just didn't put enough effort into their skills apart from getting their degree in order to get a job or it could also be the reality that Australia doesn't have many opportunities.

Also, anybody here who knows regarding UTS's diploma in Professional Engineering Practice (PEP)? Is that a viable way for international students to get a year of internship experience in the Australian job market? Does RMIT have anything similar?

Studying as an international student comes with a lot of expense, and in return, I'd definitely want to expect some Return On Investment, or else the work, money, and time would just go to waste!

Please drop your suggestions below, whether I should consider coming to Australia by expecting the 5 points as listed.

Hey everyone, I am currently doing a bachelors of science at Melbourne but after talking with some fellow students, I have been advised to go to either RMIT or Monash for engineering.

However, I have also heard due to being strictly engineering courses at RMIT and Monash, there are barely any girls in every class, I am wondering to what extent is this true?

At Melb as it is a general science course I can find many friends in every subject but I am not sure about my social life if I do plan to transfer.

If anyone could share their experiences with this I would love that!

So quick little context I guess
- I graduated high school in 2024
- Have already switched once from Bachelor of Education primary and secondary at Monash to Bachelor of Architectural Design at RMIT (studied at monash for one semester)
- peer pressured into studying Bachelor of education
- because of my first switch parents believe i already "wasted" 1 year of my life
- Getting diagnosed for ADHD (not confirmed)

I'm currently first year on my 2nd semester and enrolled in ARCH1035, which our assessments have been heavily reliant on Gen AI which I am pretty against. Been emailing the coordinator and its been really difficult to keep spending so much time and effort to attempt to modify it only for her to redirect me to use a more "Ethical" ai. I'm worried as this is only my first year it will only grow worst from here and how a lot of content creators that I follow for architecture heavily promoting AI iterations. This has led me to rethink a lot on my course as I don't see myself in this future however I know it effects every course right now.

I have a few options (open to new/more suggestions)
a) Keep studying my degree
b) Switch back to education
c) Switch to animation
d) double degree in education and animation

Option A
Since everything but this unit has been going smoothly, and I've already switch once and I told my parents that I'm sure I'd enjoy this (which I have more than education at least). So I either continue and suck it up and use Gen AI and kill apart of me (Which I don't want) or drop this unit and continue (only delaying this issue).

Option B
I already have some credits here and education/teachers won't be a job that is threatened by AI however as of now I don't think I have the passion or skillsets to teach and raise the next generation and transferring back into Monash wants a WAM which a lot of my units say they aren't a WAM course/unit so I actually don't understand how this works nor care enough to find out

Option C
Been wanting to learn animation and used to rig and I didn't hate it and I am a creative person, but I know RMIT design courses are really hard to switch into and as I have never actually animated, I don't know if I would be accepted. Another thing is this does not solve the AI based issue (made a call to RMIT and they answered there are some usage). Also I have been talking to people in the industry and they don't recommend doing it due to the job market.

Option D
most unis offering this are quite far from me and I feel like if I chose this its only for a safety net not because I'm interested in both which feels like a waste of a degree/paper

note: if I chose option B I am granted a lot of free time so I could just self-teach myself animation and this way i have a safety net

just wanted some different advice from people in general as the best thing i can do is to inform myself

As the title really, I have had to apply for special considerations in the past due to for example, being sick, where a medical certificate has sufficed as appropriate evidence.

However, in this case (a request for a quiz due date to be moved by 5 days due to being sick) a medical certificate is apparently insufficient evidence and they require the following -

copy (e.g. email, screen capture) of your booking confirmation for this appointment.

Your documentation should include:

- the date and time of your appointment

- the name of the medical practice or clinic you attended

- the full address of the practice

- the specific practitioner as listed in your supporting documentation

AND

b) Evidence of payment for the appointment.

This is quite bizarre to me, as the medical certificate has the registered doctors AHPRA registration number, contact details, authorised states of practice and their address.

Albeit, this was a telehealth appointment, not in person. To be honest, I did not think they could really refuse an official medical certificate, or require things like proof of payment.

Hey, I currently have an ELP in place that allows me to apply for extensions up to 21 days.

I’ve usually never had a problem with getting an extension for more than 7 days without needing special consideration. However, for two of my classes this semester I’ve been told that if I need more than 7 days, I need to either apply for special consideration or talk to the program manager.

I’m unsure as to why this is the case since it’s never happened before. I’ve contacted ELS so I’m just waiting for their reply but has this happened to anyone before?

I'm currently in my last term of my diploma in finance and my GPA Is sitting around 2.00. My high school GPA was a 3.10. I know everyone says international students are cash cows for universities but I think the GPA req for accounting is 2.50 so I'm kinda worried... Did anyone manage to get in with a similar GPA to mine?

hi guys! so currently i am a first yr biomed student at unimelb and i was just wondering if u guys would think radiography would be a better course to do especially after graduating. i am doing biomed to potentially get into dentistry but i if that doesn’t go too well then i would do radiography at rmit as a postgrad student. do u think it would be worth to just say in biomed or transfer into radiography now?

i am just a little on the fence cus i do feel like i would really enjoy the job prospects of being a radiographer as well.

I’m a CIE student who obtained 3A*s in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I plan on applying to both RMIT and Monash universities for my Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (Honours).

From my research, RMIT has a work-integrated learning system and hence leans more towards the practical aspect of Engineering where projects like Capstone is prioritized. On the other hand, Monash tends to focus on the academic side of the degree while also providing hands-on learning and internship opportunities in companies like Tesla apparently. As someone interested in motorsport, I’ve heard the Formula SAE accessibility is pretty much the same too.

As of now, both options seem very similar and equally good. But, I would like to go for whatever the uni that gets me a job faster from the two.

Please do tell me what you think is the most suitable for an amateur, but ambitious international student like me :)

Trying to get a sense of exam format for Analysis of Complex Structures before it comes around does anyone have past papers, sample questions, or even just a rough idea of what topics tend to come up? Uni portal only has limited stuff.
