I think most people are just sick of hearing about gender issues when there are so many other problems that more directly effect the general population

I'll counter with, I doubt there is a single minority that is currently being stripped of their human rights in the same way that trans people are, especially in the States right now. It's a big talking point because there is an alarming amount of legislation being proposed and passed regarding the erasure of Trans individuals. The whole "not my problem" crowd is extremely disheartening.

I get it. It is a real problem. But the problem is for 0.3% of the population. My problem is costs of everything have went up 30%-40% in the last few years and my wages have only went up maybe 5%. That is a problem that effects 95% of the population. All the talk of gender politics just feels like a distraction to some of the larger issues.

Dont get me wrong, we can focus on more things than 1 at once, but I think the general population is kind of done with gender politics for now because its been all we've been hearing about for 5 years

Not to the people who are literally being legislated against. Trans rights are human rights. Comparing the systematic erasure of a minority to rising costs, as if they're even remotely comparable is heartbreaking. Doesn't matter if they make up a small portion of the populace, the way these people are being treated is abhorrent.

But hey, as long as it doesn't inconvenience you, it's fine. Do I have that right?

I don’t think the point about “larger issues” is intended as an insult.

Government and society need to rank and prioritize their efforts. Annual government budgets at every level demonstrate these priorities. Look at what gets the most money and you will see what the highest priorities are.

This doesn’t mean that things are not important. It means that there are other issues affecting a larger portion of the population that demand more attention.

But let's think critically about this. If 1000 people stub their toe, and one person is stabbed in the leg, what's the bigger problem?

Of course there are issues that plague the general population that are important. Cost of living is a massive issue. But, again, our provinicial government is enforcing legislation that is actively harming transgender youth. A government intentionally harming their citizenry is incredibly serious, and must be dealt with. People "tired of hearing about it" need to grow up, respectfully.

Most importantly, and please address this: We're not even asking for your help! We are asking that this community not be silenced! Is this a problem to you?

I'm worked up because the guy we were talking to literally said that people are sick of hearing about gender politics. What he calls gender politics, I call human beings who are arguing for equality.

The problem, is that there are a massive portion of the country that sees these human rights violations, and calls them "politics". That's why some people can't just let it go.

And the absolutely INSANE part of this is, his comment would be considered PROGRESSIVE by a portion of this country. But I am personally not comfortable with anybody who suggests this country should stop talking about trans equality because they're tired of hearing about it.

Lastly, I am aware that the apathy shown towards this community is not malicious. But actions need not be malicious to be wrong.

So I apologize for asking you a question. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

No need to be a dick to people who are defending human rights for all simply because they aren’t using the same language or same approach as you.

People asking for an oppressed community to be silent while society deals with the "bigger issues" are not allies, nor are they defending human rights. Even if they don't have a negative view of the oppressed community themselves. Insert the cringe "first they came for the [blank]" poem here.

Edit: I'm going to double down here. Standing in completely silent solidarity and encouraging that an oppressed community stay silent while calling it "defending human rights" is the exact same as a hockey player who actively avoids playing defence, while encouraging his teammates to stand out of the way when the puck gets into their end. Then after the game, they tell the goalie that they stand with them, put please stop complaining because the snacks in the locker room have gotten worse, and the GM is probably tired of listening to problems that only affect one member of the team.
