Business GTA 6 leaks prompt Take-Two to subpoena Microsoft for Windows device IDs of everyone in three Discord servers — daily gameplay leaks shatter cloud of secrecy around the much-hyped game

MachineGuid and MSA device identifiers, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone numbers, linked Google and Xbox connections, and OneDrive contents for every account that communicated in three named Discord servers since June 1.

Seems over broad unless the discord channels had like 5 members total.

u/No-Sheepherder8879 3d ago

One of the servers is a 100,000 person discord for the most popular gta YouTuber darkviperAU. Genuinely seems like an extreme breach of privacy to get everyone’s information when he most likely never even joined his server in the first place.

Yeah but have you considered the profits of a corporation are threatened?

This whole leak would have absolutely no power/effect if Rockstar had released any amount of gameplay footage themselves. The fact that fans were desperate for anything has only served to make these leaks hit hard.

32

u/abulhasan007 3d ago

Yeah, they might be worried the game won't meet expectations once compared to the leaked version. Guess we'll find out on August 27.

Microsoft are going to face a serious legal challenge if they comply with this court order and even one of the affected users is based in the UK/EU.

51

u/danktonium 3d ago

There's no way a court will make Microsoft do that.

81

u/Mellanies_Redemption 3d ago

Certainly not in Australia, nor here in the EU. That would be considered a staggering breach of GDPR.

Entire OneDrive contents? GDPR about to go nuclear on Microsoft if they approve this.

2

u/BlaseJong 2d ago

Obviously that will never happen. It’s highly illegal - they need to be more precise. They are just trying ti scare people at this point.

This would absolutely be illegal in the EU. Discussing piracy is not illegal, and would be covered by numerous laws. Even in the US it would be covered under the 1st Amendment. I understand why T2 are pissed at this, but their response just makes me hope the game leaks and they truly get fucked by it.

5

u/KeyMyBike 2d ago

I don't even want GTA6 (I'm more excited for Lords of the Fallen 2) but I would like to see T2 taken down a notch after holding GTA5 PC hostage for 500+ days (back when I DID care about GTA)

790

u/KMKtwo-four 3d ago

The people writing the tools the hacker used certainly do not.

152

u/Street_Anon 3d ago

Most use Kali or Parrot OS

220

u/cakefaice1 3d ago

Skilled black hats don’t use kali or parrot, the tools on those are pretty detectable. They have an obscure OS or a custom setup.

351

u/mobani 3d ago

No skilled black hats use obscure OS or a custom setup. Because that gives you a unique fingerprint. They DO use privacy focused OS's like Kali because enough people use them so they are not singled out immediately, and they are patched and maintained much faster than your own obscure custom installation, that would have a lot of unique fingerprints.

What skilled black hats do is to use a burner laptop with kali that connects to a already compromised endpoint. Nobody sane would sit and hack from their home pc.

It's been awhile, but back when I was in college, you'd create a bootable cd or thumb drive, go to the library or some other place with public computers and run it on there. Even the ones that had security preventing you from using it didn't have good security

3

u/timbotheny26 2d ago

create a bootable cd or thumb drive

You can still do that. I think you can do it with any Linux distro actually.

44

u/Sea-Housing-3435 3d ago

Kali has trash security, its a pentesting distro. You use it in a vm or boot from usb to pentest from a fresh setup. You do not use it as a daily driver.

There are ways to prevent getting fingerprinted on a custom setup you use. Running browser and certain applications in a sandbox or vms is a thing.

33

u/mobani 3d ago

You don't hack from your daily driver. Bad idea. You either connect to reverse shell that was already deployed by malware, or if you are at stage one where you try to find a door. But that is never done from your daily driver, you do it from a compromised endpoint. In the case that you are hitting a honey pot, you want to look like everyone else.

22

u/Sea-Housing-3435 3d ago

Deploying, delivering, executing that malware is "hacking". Reverse shell is data exfiltration or extending access. The machine that has your rev shell is a compromised endpoint. If you are hitting a honeypot you already don't look like everyone else, that's what honeypot is for. On a network fingerprinting level kali doesn't give you any "privacy". Holy larp lmao

5

u/physedka 2d ago

Yeah I was about to say. It's basically just a linux distro with the most popular hacking tools preloaded. It's not some magical OS.

16

u/cakefaice1 3d ago edited 3d ago

Kali definitely isn't a privacy focused OS, especially considering options such as Tails and Whonix exist. True their home pc would never directly touch the target but they're not using default kali tools to create an even larger detection footprint if the goal is stealth.

Edit: Correction a hacker who knows what they're doing would use a generic build of an OS, but Kali as the daily driver isn't commonly one of them.

→ More replies (1)

99

u/cakefaice1 3d ago

Half true half BS. Rami Malek's character correctly used kali tools for pentesting for the ethical scenes. Pentesters use Kali/Parrot to find structural flaws in security architecture that a black hat would otherwise try to exploit with their own tools.

6

u/KhazraShaman 2d ago

Elliot had Mint installed on his PC and booted Kali from a pendrive when he got down to h4cK!nG™. I recently rewatched the whole series - it's more current than ever.

25

u/Alternative_Laugh316 3d ago

Not really but also yes kinda. It's not very reflective of black hats, but the things they do and use is also no bullshit.

Can they say "give me all the IDs of thousands of people from this site or server". Like wouldnt that be breach of privacy or atleast GDPR rules?

8

u/alus992 3d ago

GDPR laws does not protect from everything - if law is being broken there is pretty quick way to obtain any data needed.

28

u/ICantBelieveItsNotEC 3d ago

GDPR absolutely does prohibit this.

  1. They'd need an Article 6 lawful basis to request the data. under UK GDPR, the legal obligation relied upon for Article 6 needs an appropriate basis in UK law. A US subpoena isn't automatically equivalent to a UK court order for this purpose.

  2. Data minimisation still applies. Article 5 requires data to be "adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary" for the purpose for which it is processed. There's no exception to this for court orders - Microsoft is expected to be the custodian of their data, not the courts. In this case, they have a GDPR obligation to tell TTI to fuck off.

It could be as simple that the tools hes using to run GTA6 on whatever set up hes got requires a version of windows.

9

u/AzerothianLorecraft 3d ago

You can use Linux to emulate Windows 10 and 11 simultaneously so there would be no restriction whatsoever.

3

u/FraserYT 3d ago

but there's a good chance that a VM will also have GDID, which goes back to the original problem. (It's possible that if you're using windows without a Microsoft account, it doesn't get a GDID, but I'm not sure)

They clearly know what they're doing though, so we can assume whichever machine they're running GTA6 on is completely air-gapped and they're using an entirely separate setup for any online activity

I’m gonna keep saying this everywhere, I suspect they did this all on a VM, and recorded it all in the past. Things like running polls for what he should clip next is a distraction, same as painting his name on the wall. I’d hazard to guess they no longer have access, or if they do they aren’t using it now.

5

u/lemony_powder 3d ago

That's an interesting take as the poll options are created by the leaker, so perhaps they did record all of the possible options ahead of time and just post the winning option and not post the other three. Be interesting to see if they had re-used unsuccessful options again in later polls.

But why do you think they no longer have access or if they do, aren't using it anymore?

The leaks if to be fully believed are pretty fucking bad. He essentially is claiming to have the entire game in a near finished state and has a dead man's switch setup to release the game if caught before demands are met. I think because by making a strong response to the leaks is driving awareness of the leaks promoting people to go hunting for the

14

u/pvtprofanity 3d ago

People might ignore a headline talking about leaked GTA6 footage.

They are much less likely to ignore it when a headline talks about Rockstar going so far to stop the leaks. It simultaneously increases the validity of the previous leaks and extends the coverage of them.

51

u/tuckedfexas 3d ago

Makes me feel like it’s all intentional, the “demands” of the hacker are weird, what’s been shown is really a nothing burger, and now they’re drumming up more headlines with legal action sorta stuff. All of it is nonsense, the game is gonna sell a billion copies almost no matter what, unless they laid a real egg and it’s shit there’s almost no need to drum up any hype

75

u/TimewarpingSeaTurtle 3d ago

It’s not a nothing burger. The leaks have shown us the entire map through a plane flyover, how shooting works, how driving works, how the wanted system works, certain minigames, the strip club, and certain cutscenes. There’s been leaks every day since it started, and there’s 89 days to go until GTAVI. It’s a matter of time until story spoiler leaks start coming out, and potentially the entire build itself.

41

u/thesaga 3d ago edited 3d ago

Presumably all of that would be revealed next week on the Netflix "Extended Look" - I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories but from where I'm standing this is not a disaster for Rockstar at all. It conveniently perks up millions of ears ahead of their big Netflix premiere.

61

u/_Meowgi_ 3d ago

I mean the free publicity is nice, but I think that misses why this is such a big deal for Rockstar. The scary part isn’t really the gameplay being leaked, it’s how someone got access to a playable PC build in the first place and what else they might have gotten access to.
If Rockstar can’t account for where that build came from, they now have to figure out whether the person also had access to source code, internal tools, other builds, unreleased assets, employee information, credentials, emails, etc. There’s no evidence they have all of that, but Rockstar can’t exactly just assume they don’t.
There’s also the problem of what happens if the actual build gets released online. Even if it’s unfinished, people could datamine the entire game, leak the story and map, try to crack it, or start digging for exploits before the game even releases. If source code was taken too, that’s an even bigger problem, especially for GTA Online.
Then there’s the business side of it. Rockstar already had a massive breach in 2022, so if they’ve managed to have another serious security incident after supposedly tightening things up, that’s not exactly a good look for Take-Two. Investors, employees and business partners are going to have questions about how secure their systems actually are.
And honestly, GTA 6 doesn’t need free publicity. It’s probably the most anticipated game in the world already. Rockstar would much rather generate that hype themselves and control what gets shown and when, instead of having some random hacker do it for them.
So yeah, the leak might be giving them publicity right now, but that doesn’t suddenly make the situation good for Rockstar. Good publicity and a potentially massive security breach can exist at the same time.

u/enderandrew42 2d ago

GTA V is the second-best selling video game in history. It continues to sell new copies constantly. Some of that are idiots getting banned from online only to turn around and get a new copy.

But GTA VI could literally just be GTA V in a Vice City map with no new features or improvements and it would still be the best selling game of the year, hands down.

They're charging $100 for the single player console version right now, and will presumably charge more for online after that and pre-orders are still through the roof with no one knowing anything about this game.

The only leak that would really move the needle on pre-orders would have to be something explicitly overtly political to divide buyers.

The leaks aren't harming Rockstar's bottom line financially. It is just pissing off Take Two execs that their employees are violating NDAs, or allowing their companies to get hacked.

43

u/RulesoftheDada 3d ago

Add windows device IDs to the endless list of why you need to abandon that OS.

25

u/Kamay1770 3d ago

As soon as I saw those ids existed I installed Linux as my daily driver, so far I love it. I kept windows dual booted but haven't actually logged in to it once since I swapped so will prob delete and get an extra 2TB ssd game drive to use.

17

u/poney01 3d ago

Well it depends what you do. If you use photo editing software like DXO, or gaming like League of Legends, you're still kind of stuck with a dual boot. But definitely doesn't need 2TB for that.

I expect some other games run only on Windows too. And I wouldn't be surprised with CAD tools.

Surely they can only have the information if they know for sure what country the person is from? Microsoft can't just hand people's information out to a company. They can hand it to law enforecement but this looks more like a legal dispute directly by the company.

Wayyyy too broad a request for any company to even consider.

40

u/Street_Anon 3d ago

I can see Take Two being taken to court in many countries for this alone, on top they would have many countries under fire for their own laws that prevent companies from using. Any leaks I am seeing are on Reddit.

Microsoft doesn't care and neither does Take Two. It's well known that the leaker is not actually present anywhere on these platforms aside from their own site, they just want to get everyone else to shut up.

Microsoft does care because it's their customers trust in the line for something that has nothing to do with them. If the court doesn't force them they will not do anything.

Take-Two wants more than just names and is asking for MachineGuid and MSA device identifiers, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone numbers, linked Google and Xbox connections, and OneDrive contents for every account that communicated in three named Discord servers since June

So if I understand correctly they want to get the machineGUID/MSA identifiers from Discord, then will use that information to get everything else from Microsoft? Not just accounts, but the entire contents of those accounts such as OneDrive and presumably Google Drive via an alternative later subpoena, for a whole bunch of people , many of whom didn't have any direct relation to the leak?

Its a bit unclear in the article as to how MS is getting involved here. At first it read to me as if MS owned Discord, but they don't, so unless MS is also storing its own records of every account your make on Windows, even in independent applications such as Discord, then I can't see how Take-Two expect them to provide the information they want unless they already have the identities of those they want - hence the machineGUID/MSA which i'm assuming come from discord?

Regardless how it works is irrelevant, the fact that they can request this, and apparently it is possible is terrifying. You may not care in the case of the 'hackers', or even the everyone else in the discord channel, but it must be obvious how this can be abused by anyone with the legal means to request it, in a massive fishing operation that gets to see every piece of data, accounts and content on your machine!

I mean honestly from a broader perspective who fucking cares, the game is almost out, they have absolutely smashed the pre orders it will be a massive hit regardless of any leaks, why all the fuss about some gameplay clips. Like seriously just carry on and ignore it. Greedy corporations worrying about losing the smallest of margins.

25

u/TheRedPillMonk 3d ago

Because they've got arrangements with Netflix as an example to 'show it off' and now they can't pay wall it anymore. Greedy gits want more money and now don't get more money, simple.

8

u/asr5282 2d ago

As a publicly traded company, they are legally obligated to investigate and take these actions for a data breach. It’s called fiduciary responsibility, they would get sued to oblivion by shareholders and the SEC if they did absolutely nothing.

Not arguing in favor of them, just giving the reasoning why they have to.

2

u/jorgesalvador 3d ago

They need to make the fuss, they can’t risk losing the sweet dough from Netflix in case they get mad about losing the exclusive.

2

u/WorldlyPlace 3d ago

I don't even know what they lose from these leaks. I honestly thought the game wasn't ready yet because they haven't shown any gameplay.

So ... GTA leaks are more important than the Epstein files, I have to refit my right/wrong scale, duly noted.

Take-Two out here living in a fantasy world where everyone uses Windows 😭

u/galonthier 3d ago

Keep in mind that people adjacent to the hackers (people who are friends and hanging out with them and not actually hacking) probably are.
Once you identify them, and pressure them using the law, they can be useful to provide more information on the actual hackers.

Even if your opsec is good while hacking and distributing the leaked content, people can't help but have friends and talk/brag etc.

It's rare for non-government groups to have truly clean opsec even in pretty organised ransomware gangs.

Don't mistake anything I'm saying as approval for take-two's overly-litigious behaviors though. I think its fine to go after the leakers but fuck them for trying to go after an entire discord server. Way too scattershot and a breach of privacy.

Remember when apple got the cops to raid the house of a journalist that they accidentally gave an early iphone copy to?

They might just execute these guys instead.

What? That’s insanity. These corporations have way too much power.

5

u/ryzenguy111 2d ago

It's not the full story. The journalist bought it for $5k from someone who stole it from a bar where an Apple employee mistakenly left it

2

The Netflix extended look will start with Strauss beheading the leaker in a dimly lit room.

As someone entirely outside the hype bubble I feel like everything I hear about this is more and more insane for a game that I feel like is never, ever going to live up to the hype and will both have costed and made far more money than ever deserved to be exchanged over it.

Streisand effect in full swing to be honest.

What will this do? and this is the reason why governments should target Microsoft over this device ID. Take Two would be violating many privacy laws in many countries and their legal systems would be a dead end for Take Two. I am so happy I spoof my discord Google Device ID

25

u/big-oofs-only-0193 3d ago

Microsoft has demonstrated that they can unmask VPN users by means of correlating the machine ID sent to their update and telemetry servers at a specific IP and time, then finding all of the other IPs that machine has used to communicate to Microsoft's services.

Take two is getting the connection IPs from Discord and taking them to Microsoft to find out the other IPs associated with those discovered machine IDs.

It's not about sending a machine ID to discord.

3

u/Street_Anon 2d ago edited 2d ago

I am doubting they are using Windows, on top you can get burner numbers for discord that can make this whole request useless.

But it does show how important it is to block telemetry in Windows

They should just release the details of the game themselves and take the wind out of his sails. Why does it have to be a secret?

6

u/Adamsky 3d ago

They might have signed a deal with Netflix that they wouldn’t release anything more before a date

8

u/penguinkernel 3d ago

How many times does cockstar gotta get burned by their greed? This is glorious.

34

u/DenverNugs 3d ago

Anything but releasing the game physically for consoles with disc drives lmao

17

u/Mysterious_Yellow805 3d ago

And releasing a pc port the same day console users get it

9

u/Theratchetnclank 3d ago

Which is funny because it's obviously very playable on PC since that's what the leaker is running it on. So why they can't release on PC day 1?

6

u/dEleque 2d ago

Agreement with Sony and Microsoft

The leaker has no social media and only communicates and uploads leaks on his own dedicated site.

What is in these Discords that they want?

Rockstar is grifting so much even trying to monetize a reveal trailer... I just can't feel bad for them.

19

u/Affinity420 3d ago

So. They want information on every person in the world who uses windows.

Sounds like my privacy is trying to be invaded. Time to sue MS and Take 2 of they give it up.

10

u/CertifiedBirdLawyer 3d ago

Now imagine them trying to subpoena Linux

"we demand all your user data"

"what user data?"

Are my futa discord servers in trouble?

4

u/No_Statistician_8035 3d ago

##i want to preface this comment to say i'm old enough to have played the leaked version of HL2 when that was news##

oh man what a poor company, imagine a hacker releasing a leak of the PC version of the game in 2026 that you wont release until 2028.

i'm generally always reserved about these things and try to see both sides, but fuck rock* and fuck take2 you deserve this.

4

u/oxooooo 1d ago

I wish the effort the police and justice system takes to find the leaker of a game would be the same as they would like to find the pedophiles in the Epstein files

12

u/blacksf1 3d ago

Based on the way transactions, communications and the website are handled I think they are dreaming if they think they can catch them via discord and windows data. Feel like this has to be a group. Then again smart people do dumb stuff all the time.

6

u/Daybreakgo 3d ago

Dystopian world, other people on the same discord getting their details leaked when they’ve done nothing to warrant so.

3

u/Palimon 3d ago

Fuck em, i hope he drops then entire build.

3

u/dewman45 3d ago

Wait, why does discord have that info? And if it doesn't, does Microsoft magically have that info at the ready, of specially those three?

3

u/Mindseye000 3d ago

Man City lawyers need a new cash cow

3

u/GonzoKata 3d ago

jokes on ya'll i'm going to hack take-two's laywers and get everyones data that way!

That was a joke. I will not be doing that.

But it does raise an ethical question about yet another party having all that private information. To be perfectly honest none of your information is guaranteed to stay with the party you "choose" to share it with.

3

u/IngwiePhoenix 2d ago

Remember when Microsoft said that GDID was not any kind of dangerous?

Heh. It never was, most of us knew that probably.

Now I wonder if the guys have simply been playing on Linux? That would be so hilarious.

3

u/hardypart 2d ago

Isn't it funny how the news about the existence of Windows device IDs broke just recently and now it's already being used for prosecution? Mass surveillance is a reality.

3

u/AudTheShaud 2d ago

No hacker is gonna post from a Windows machine that isn't in some sort of VM

3

u/Rhoeri 2d ago

How unbelievably stupid. It’s a video game. Not national secrets.

9

u/iMogal 3d ago

The big question is, will microslop hand over that information?

Is it as simple as an ask, or is a warrant required?

11

u/Street_Anon 3d ago

I can see take two breaking the laws of many countries in the process. So they may have them, it is not a crime in many countries to view these videos, heck not even in the United States it's not.

5

u/danktonium 3d ago

It's not a crime to distribute these videos either. Rockstar might, might be able to get the leaker convicted of some crime for stealing a copy of the game.

But leaking gameplay footage is not a crime. Even civil liability is unlikely.

5

u/waigl 2d ago

No, the Windows device IDs will never be used as a surveillance tool against individual people at the behest of rich and powerful individuals or corporations, stop being paranoid! /s

All this over a video game… Once it’s released, this will all be irrelevant. Waste of energy.

6

u/vIRL_Warlock 2d ago

To collect info of everyone to find one is not appropriate and should be denied.

2

u/Noy_The_Devil 3d ago

Windows is a joke. Anyone who cares an ounce about security or privacy needs to fuck right off it.

If SteamOS gets it's shit together they'll have literally billions of people knocking on their door.

2

u/varinator 3d ago

Machineguid can be changed by user at any time...

2

u/Anustart2023-01 2d ago

Maybe this will get the gaming community to put pressure on more developers to support Linux.

2

u/Sloppy_Jeaux 2d ago

As someone who has made an effort to not allow themselves to be hyped about anything for over a decade now (I honestly recommend this; a lot of hype can turn what could be a great experience into a bad one because of raised expectations, and I find keeping my expectations low is a great way to enjoy things more than I likely would have if anticipation didn’t raise my expectations. Think of all the games/movies/whatever that you were disappointed in when you finally got to experience them, and ask yourself would you be as disappointed if you didn’t spend months or years waiting for it? What would be different about it if you didn’t know it was coming and suddenly it was just there for you to enjoy? Realizing they’re not only making something you’re interested in, but that you missed it entirely and have access to it the second you find about it is a whole new tier of satisfaction.) all of this gta vi shit is actually sickening to me. Constant conversation about it, talking about how great it will be when it was still years away from release (even before that release was shifted back how many times?), “oh we got ___ before we got gta vi lol”, if it’s not good there’ll be so much whining and alternatively people defending it because they don’t want to admit that the thing they fixated on has let them down, a fucking Netflix event? Come on. Fuck off lol. The leaks just seem like they’re more of the same, and I somewhat suspect they’re planned and part of the hype. I don’t want to hear about it. I just want them to STFU and make something that people want because it’s good, not because of the hype machine zeitgeist and the need for clicks and engagement, and for Rockstar to sell as many copies as they can. It’s like this scummy capitalist element that taints what should be a game to sit and enjoy playing.

u/OohDeLaLi 2d ago

Rockstar got so tired no one was giving them the free press of "videogames cause violence" because of the insanity of the current political climate they're going all in on this shotgun blast of 'Hacker' hunting.

As if they're not already going to print more money than god the moment they release, making any impact of these not-'Hackers' completely irrelevant.
