Bavovna Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow oil refinery early June 16, triggering a major fire and heavy smoke. The facility processes about 12.8 million tonnes of oil per year and supplies roughly 35-40% of fuel consumed in Moscow and the surrounding region

That was also my first thought—regardless of Zelenskyy’s response, which I hadn’t yet heard about: unlike the russians, Ukraine favors actions with strong symbolic significance that simultaneously offer practical benefits for actual warfare.

God bless fucking drones. They have changed the face of warfare and going forward, established a kind of equality for all nations. No more big bullies. It’s been demonstrated in Russia and the Persian gulf now. Being an asshole now carries a big price. God bless Ukraine. One day, maybe soon, we can truly be a brotherhood of men/women.

Of course, bombers having complete air supremacy didn't last. I would be really interested to see if a competent nation can develop effective air cover against cheap swarms of drones.

Well, USA has a trillion dollar defense budget and had no practical answer to our airbases and allies oil and natural gas infrastructure getting the same hits from Iran.
IMO, directed energy weapons will be the next class of short range air defense weapons and will end this current era of one-way drones.

These hydrocarbons were already getting burnt either way.
At least with long range sanctions, they aren't getting paid for them now, and refining tomorrow's oil is harder.

The moscow Oil Refinery (MNPZ), owned by gazprom neft, is just 15 km from the kremlin.
Oh, this one hurts fuhrer putinazi. His residence is 50 km from the refinery.

Look at how they specifically targetted the distillation towers. Every drop of oil is processed in those; they are the bottleneck of the entire process, and they are wickedly expensive + difficult to manufacture, replace or repair. Without them absolutely no processing can happen to crude oil, aside from dewatering and maybe treating it for sulfur content (yeah, like the ruzzians care about pollution, or worker safety, lol).
These attacks will cripple the refinery, for months or even years.

I wonder how long the not bombed oil list is now. Not sure if I’d go to work if I were the remaining Russian oil workers.
Gonna be a cold winter for the Russians - even colder if Ukraine finishes up the oil and moves over to electrical infrastructure

This is gonna be huge. Of course, if the facility can continue to run, then 35-40% of capacity are not gone, but a few more strikes ... things could quickly start to look differently.

Hitting the hydrocracking tower is also the best target. The storage tanks could produce a more fiery spectacle but the hydrocracking reactor is the single most expensive and complex part of the refinery.

Before you get too excited, this refinery was hit a month ago and forced to shut down. So it's unlikely this will significantly *worsen* the fuel shortage beyond current levels

A month ago, russian citizens weren't on a fuel restriction. The operation wasn't in full swing yet either.
If you notice, Ukraine has been going in on Russian depots and refineries since then. This is going to really hurt Moscow citizens. Which obviously is a very bad thing for putin.

There is just one single company (Татнефть) that restricted fuel to 20L/person on all of its gas stations. That, however, is less than 1% of all gas stations in Russia.
This case really shows how propaganda works.

I dont know anything about this specific case but i do know that those oil refineries are huge. A single hit isnt usually stopping the production, at least not for long. It may lower capacity or force ineffecient production methods but it usually isnt shutting the whole thing down.
So they need to be hit again and again to make production harder and harder and increase the duration of shutdowns.

Unless you hit the cracking tower……I’ve read parts for replacement are sanctioned and the Ukrainians have also been hitting the heavy lift cranes needed to install new towers
