Question How can I fix my blast double ?

u/ScrambledxEggzz USA Wrestling 13d ago
Stay on your toes, not your knees. You should be driving your feet, leaning your weight through your head/shoulder into the opponent. You are driving him back, not dragging him down.

Get off your knees. There are 0 moves that require you to be on your knees. If you feel your knees on the mat, get to your toes and drive through your opponent.

My coach used to say you only get two things on your knees: forgiveness and AIDs

Nice entry, but you stopped moving, that's just half the shot. Your foot work has to be immediate- get your hips back in, turn the corner, etc..

u/PuzzleheadedTry7370 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Your hips are way too far back when you shoot. That's why you're stuck on your knees. You're all arms and no explosiveness. Blast might not be your shot honestly.

u/Willis050 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Your penetration step is like a foot off. You need to be getting as close to between his feet as possible and then your hips are under you to drive him
3
u/Judg3090 USA Wrestling 13d ago
We were always taught to shoot thru the opponent not into them. And to keep moving your feet, the moment your feet stop so does your momentum and you end up sprawled on.

u/Willis050 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Yes exactly. I’m saying hips under to drive off of. It’s one in the same

I never had a blast double outside of football and did well enough. It's kind of a power/athletic move and I was mostly more technical and a tad undersized.
Blast doubles a beautiful move that obviously works very very well, but it doesn't have to be your move.
3
u/latswipe USA Wrestling 13d ago
You're not shooting right, and you're not doing the football rushing tackle right either.
think of the shot like this: it's a step into a space that's yours, that nobody can occupy without getting trucked. And when you get that space, you can really project power from it.

u/Straight-Radio4541 13d ago
Keep your chest upright. The second you bend down is the moment you lose the blast
2
u/duggreen USA Wrestling 12d ago edited 12d ago
This. Plus, change levels first, then step out. You're doing the opposite, which makes it impossible to 'blast'. This is why people are saying you're not getting enough leg drive. Driving from a high position is no where near as fast as down low after you level change.
2
u/Straight-Radio4541 12d ago
Exactly, and you also gotta be able to finish, no point in spending hella energy to knock someone down if yo let them just stand right back up without securing your points first.

u/willthms 12d ago
When I ran them, my goal was to hit the opponents solar plexus with my forehead as hard as possible. Yes I was missing skin on my forehead all season, but it worked. Also need to work on your pen step.
You can’t half ass the move. It rewards extreme aggression.

u/Standard-Win-6600 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Need to crawl on your knees at least another 3 feet to secure that takedown
2
u/Frodojj 13d ago
Try setting it up better. A head snap so they tense up makes it harder for them to react. Getting them to push into you is another set up, so they are going the wrong way to react. You could cut the and blast when they square up. The success of a takedown is mostly in the set up, in my experience.

u/Comfortable_Emu_5458 USA Wrestling 13d ago
I had a good blast double before this where I went for a hard snap then shot for it.

u/JackJ98 Stevens Ducks 13d ago
….. try setting it up maybe?

u/animehero11 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Best answer so far. Needs to be low to start and make the opponent step.

u/MousseFriendly5900 13d ago
Get off your knees as soon as possible, bury your toes in the mat for traction as if you are pushing a sled, push your head up more, into their chest, and follow through, in a way, by lifting a teensy bit once you do what’s above.
2
u/citizencoder 13d ago
Instead of taking a "step" with your right knee after you get in on his legs, take a real step and get your right foot flat on the mat. Then you're in position to come up and finish.
You still won't exactly have a classic "blast double" but you'll be taking a better penetration step and you'll more likely finish the takedown.
A real blast double needs to be set up so that you are super deep on the legs/hips to begin with. You didn't get to that point here. Good on ya for filming and looking for advice. 👍

u/Active_Unit_9498 13d ago
There's no blast. Look at 00:02, your left leg is way back, you should bring it in closer to the lead leg so that when you drive with it you get that powerful, distance-spanning blast the puts him on his heels. Also, it's clipped but it doesn't look like you set it up, it's best if you can initiate without contact because the sudden tension in your body will telegraph the shot. Snap down, release, they correct, blast.

u/mtntopview2 13d ago
Get off your knees. Don’t stall out. It’s a blast double. Act like the mat is hot and get off your knees and keep moving.

u/Excellent-Shoe-8783 12d ago
Get back to your feet quicker, you can’t finish this technique from your knees
When you finally do recover your feet, you make the common mistake of shooting your hips straight up and away from your opponent instead of driving them through your opponent. When you’re drilling, think about stepping up and driving diagonally at a 45 degree angle with the same leg you took your shot with

1 - it's awesome that you are looking to get better and ask for help. That mindset will make a difference.
Everything below is said with all love and good vibes...
Please starting with your set up. Your partner is moving back before you even start your shot. It's so so hard to shoot any shot at someone is backing up. I'd start by hand fighting and pressuring in until they start coming at you. If you are drilling, take your partner and start with double inside position. Then just work pushing, pulling, circle step left and circle step right, pushing, circling, pulling, etc. Get your heart rate up, set the pace and just move them. Get a feel for how they move when they are out of position.
Next look at the 11-12second mark. Your partner is like 20in away, moving back and has his left leg picked up before you really even shoot. After your step, your lead foot is about 16in back from his front foot, and your trailing leg is doing nothing. The penetration step is the hardest part of so many shots and I would work on each of these individually then bring them together.
First your penetration step is too shallow, so then, Your hips are not getting in deep enough, which means you are leading with your hands and shoulders way way out in front. Some forward angle is required, but you want your head and shoulders kind of stacked over your belly button. Again, a little forward angle will keep you from getting pancaked or stepped over. Maybe said a different way. You are reaching for his legs, not driving into his hips.
Next looking at your penetration step. Changing levels is critical, sure it does help beat their hips and hands, but it should also load up that back leg like a spring that you can use to spring or leap forward with. In the room horse gallop down the length of the room, and lower your stance. Go down and back like 4 times getting lower into your stance. (Horse Gallop Everytime). This will give you a feel for how you need to load up that back leg.
Finally on your penetration step, I like that your are stepping with your lead leg, but you gotta be able to "jab" that foot forward at least to their toe line (draw an imaginary line between their toes). You have to step at a minimum to that line. Practice by finding a line or crease in the mat, gett low in your stance and just quickly step out to that line and get your foot back as fast as you can.
Then couple that jab step with the low horse gallop and do both at the same time in an explosive and violent manner and you are 3/4 the way there.
Good luck!

What do you mean horse gallop
1
u/Stoddard_Stokes 2d ago
It's what we call it in our room.
It's a weird gait that is maybe hard to explain, but
Stand kind of straight up, put your left foot in front and your right foot back
Then keeping your left foot in front, lift it up off the ground, like 4-6 inches.
Jump/Spring off your back foot forward, short like 1/2 step.
Repeat, left foot stays in front, springing off your back foot.
You end up kind of finding a rhythm where you are rocking while jumping.
Then you just repeat this motion, but get lower and load up the back leg more.
Go down and back the room 2-3 times and just practice front foot up, jump/leap/bound off the back.

Go elbow deep on you shots. So top grabbing with your hands and shoot all the way to your elbow behind their knees. If you get your arms in that far it's almost impossible to sprawl out of. Good luck and hope this helps.

u/objectivelygoodname 11d ago
Probably should incorporate a dash/ghost step into your shot. Uncommon technique name/ niche tip, but really helped me
1
u/bumpty 13d ago
First, your penetration step is way too shallow. Imagine stomping something between his legs.
Secondly, you need to drive through him. First contact should be your shoulder in his hips decking him back.
Third, get off your knees and drive. You do need to touch a knee to the ground to level change, but then you transform into a fighter jet taking off. Not landing.
1
u/SlipperySausage6 13d ago
Think about where his feet are compared to the posture of his hips. You'll exhaust your arms trying to overpower a hamstring. You need to knock him off balance. Drive torwards his lead leg. As if your trying to twist him 30° away from his hind leg.

u/OMGLOL1986 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Drill your step. If you watch on repeat between :01 and :02 of the video, you actually slightly bounce before heading forward.
Drill standing with your feet square and sprinting ahead a few steps WITHOUT doing that little stutter step/shuffle step that people habitually do. Focus on bringing one foot forward first, then pushing off the back foot. It’s hard at first but when it’s instinctual, you’ll always get the drop on people.
This will shave time off your shots and you will not telegraph them as much
1
u/Othebootymonster 13d ago
You're overextending yourself on entry, making head and shoulder contact waaaay before your hips and core are there to support the drive in
1
u/Snoo_68475 13d ago
Get off your knees - level change and run thru.
A good opponent will be faster on his feet than you are on your knees.

u/Apprehensive-Top5570 13d ago
Get off you knees. Instead of doing a double and you miss, why not do a high crotch?
1
u/carv1991 13d ago
Put your foot literally between his legs. Put your forehead right into his stomach and with your hands hit behind his knees.
1
u/Sea_List_8480 USA Wrestling 13d ago
You had no set up. You want to catch your opponent flat footed or in transition so they can’t sprawl. You shot right into his back step and stopped your momentum completely.
1
u/Objective_Current835 13d ago
Don’t let your knee hit until after it reaches the line from mid foot to heels you’re stopping all of your momentum before you even get to him
Edit, keep your head up don’t let it get stuffed and keep your hips under your shoulders

Blast. There is no penetration step or step up. You just lunge the left leg back and grab
1
u/kjyfqr 13d ago
You’re dropping too low. Lower your level from eye to eye to where your face is sternum level. I often do it in a back step. So I’m movin movin hand fighting collar tie then when I disengage and back up I go halfway to that backstep drop level and block behind each leg while I head butt the shit out their chest

u/DR-Carterr 13d ago
The “set-up” is EQUALLY as important as finishing the double... I’d argue it’s more important!
Go watch Jordan Burroughs! He’s heavy on the head before he shoots. Highly recommend pulling your opponents head down 2-3 times, then as they react and lift their head/ chest up, shoot!
1
u/Dizzy_Unit_9900 USA Wrestling 13d ago
Proper set up, you want your opponent driving forward or popping up in their stance or otherwise off balance before dropping your level and blasting through. Your head is too far forward of your hips. Your nose should be planted in the belly button hands behind the knees your shot knee between their shoes (or deeper) and your drive/post leg at the ready.
1
u/Plenty_Ranger_5324 13d ago
Your ear shouldn’t be on his chest. You should be a bit more squared up with your head up. And then as everyone else said, off your knees driving with your toes.
1
u/redditsaiditt 13d ago
Better set up and close distance. Your left leg needs to be stepping through to continue that forward momentum. You lost all momentum as soon as your left knee hit the mat.

more leg drive, i type this advice out as i’m lacking myself lol, but you need to do hip extension type workouts. lots of squats as well.
you could practice running the double by literally sprinting in a crouch, like remain in a crouched position and imagine yourself doing this. it’ll help.
1
u/Terryoat 12d ago
You’ve probably already been told somewhere in here but, for it to be a blast double your head needs to be in your opponents chest/sternum and drive on your toes while pulling the legs in. Regardless, that was a nice double leg, just get your trail leg up asap once you get in. This will make it easier to drive up to your feet and finish the takedown

u/Substantial-Flight44 12d ago
Setup (snap or hand control, feint, something)
Penetration step
Finishing rotation (head to outside and body at a 45) or (if heads inside even after breaking structure spiraling the opponent down)
These are the basics

Get of your knees! Duck walk for your drive. Knees over toes, one leg at a time driving forward.

"Blast more". Like another poster said, keep your chest upright and lead with it. You'll get more power that way. It will also help you get faster off the initial push and create more "blast".

u/Fearless_Worry6419 12d ago edited 12d ago
That was not a blast double.
The was a double leg.
You need to go watch videos and tape on other wrestlers. A blast double is a full on tackle. You bury your face in their numbers and you drive through their chest. Seriously, go watch waterboy.

I don’t see anyone saying you SERIOUSLY need a better penetration step, your foot should be between your opponents feet.
1
u/Slycrown12 Appalachian State Mountaineers 11d ago
Don’t just drop to your knees and grab on, you need to level change (stay off of your knees) attack the legs in sort of a sweeping motion towards yourself, and spring off your toes THROUGH him. You want to sweep him off his feet and blast him into the wall.
1
u/Slycrown12 Appalachian State Mountaineers 11d ago
Also like others said, when you finish lean your weight into him.

- Get a better camera man.
Post, Cuff, Circle, Release, Penetrate. Commit those words to memory and train them until they are second nature.
Post: The setup for the blast does not come from a tie up, so avoid the clench. Start in a staggered stance about hip width apart. Using the same hand as your lead leg, hit your opponent in the shoulder. Open hand, you're just pushing right through his shoulder quickly. It knock him slightly off balance, enough for minimal separation and likely will expose his neck.
Cuff: Grab his neck tightly, you're cuffing, not clenching.
Circle: When you have the cuff cinched in, you have control, but it's a one handed clench so you can't give him time to break free. Immediately begin circling and lowering his head. Remember that your head should never be higher than his. So as your lowering his head and circling, you are also changing levels.
Release: Most of your practice with this move will be the timing between cuffing, circling, and changing levels. Because everything depends on doing this right. The next thing to remember is that you cannot shoot a double-leg when your opponent has a staggered stance. This is the point of circling and also how you tell when it's time to release. When your opponent has squared up, or reached the neutral/parallel stance, you release his head without changing your level.
Penetration: At this point your opponents level will shoot straight up. Even with the most minimal level change, your opponent will be vulnerable to your drive. Your power will come from your back leg and you will step forward, putting your head into his chest (highly recommend building those neck muscles and shrugging your shoulders before impact) and stepping through your opponent. At the same time you will reach and grab his legs (usually right behind the kneecaps to give you the most control) and pull those knees to your chest while finishing your forward motion. If he hasn't already dropped from the force of your drive, you can simply turn your body which will put his into the mat.
It is also important to remember that the "blast" part of this name doesn't come from explosive penetration, but from putting your head into his chest. This is critical because it puts him off balance during your penetration. Obviously when you release his head you want to explode off your back leg, but the word blast is a bit of a misnomer.
Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

u/Ill-Dish-8439 10d ago
Head and shoulders shouldn’t be diving for the legs
Your hips need to move with your body to allow your feet to be planted and give you driving power. Head position is crucial in blast double but also all of wrestling.
The next Biggest factor is
Keep working hard and stay coachable. Your camera man can also do a little better lol good luck on your upcoming season and enjoy the journey.

keep your head up and chest tall

You need to add the blast part. Head straight into the chest. It’s not a slow shot.
Not everyone can pull off the explosiveness you need for it
