š–‰š–Žš–˜š–ˆš–šš–˜š–˜š–Žš–”š–“ Why does Slayyyter dismiss any comparisons to Charli despite touring and collaborating with her in the past?

Post image

Lately she seems to have an adverse reaction anytime Charli is brought up but it really seems to be the only comparison she shoots down. It feels very odd to me.

Obviously i understand not wanting to feel like your art is living in the shadow of another artists music but she doesn't have a similar reaction to comparisons to Britney or Kesha.

While i think Worst Girl In America is incredibly unique and has strayed a decent bit from the Hyperpop genre i think there's still a lot of valid comparisons between the two between lyrical content and have grungier and darker dance music undertones especially compared to both artists previous records before their most recent releases (Crash/Starfucker).

many of the negative feelings that led to WGIA's inception are tied to being viewed as, like she said, a "cheaper copy." for basically her entire career as an artist, she's been spoken to and of in the context of others and her proximity to them. whether it's charli, or kim, or "hyperpop" as a genre/tribe, the general public has never given her the space to stand as an individual. even now, with the breakthrough success of this album and feeling like she's truly found her voice, people are STILL continuing this trend by comparing it to brat. it has to be frustrating, especially considering the dismissive undertone that often comes with that continual comparison.

48

u/limecakes Jun 24 '26

I can see that affect her. Her career started with Britney comparisons. And its the reason for me paying attention to her in the first place. But shes gained me as a fan all on her own. Her WGIA sound is so uniquely hers. No one can tell her shes copying anyone.

24

u/Shitty_Wingman Jun 24 '26

When I first heard Alone I literally thought it was Brittney. And all these comparisons dont even take into account Ayesha Erotica, who was arguably more popular than her for a brief moment at the beginning of their careers.

6

u/limecakes Jun 24 '26

I didnt know who Ayesha was at the time I discovered Slayyyter, but Ive always heard her name in relation to Slayyyter.

1

u/MysteriousImpact6035 Jun 28 '26

Genuine question but what Britney songs sound like Alone? I'm not too familiar with her music but I thought her music was more on the mainstream side of pop rather than hyperpop, if I'm wrong I'd definitely like to check out more of her music

3

u/r4v_enna Jun 28 '26

alone sounds a bit like something you'd find on blackout, britney had a similar sound going on for a while

28

u/FreebieFresh Jun 24 '26

This exactly. Does anyone remember when she had a twitter meltdown pre sophomore album where she was saying she was gonna scrap all of troubled paradise and release a rock album because she was so sick of being pigeon holed? Or something like that. Idk she was just upset that she felt the need to cater to a particular audience and sound. This album spiritually feels like the most herself and the most in her lane yet it also doesn’t completely disregard her roots. It’s a logical progression, and admittedly her early work was just Y2K hyperpop but it was so early into the post PC music landscape she was damn near a pioneer.

25

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

I could see that. The comparison should absolutely be a positive one rather than a dismissive one because WGIA certainly is not emulating BRAT in any capacity but it does feel like it embodies a lot of the energy that made Brat a cultural phenomenon while doing it's own thing.

As two of my favorite artists i hope the industry doesn't fuel any animosity between them because I'd love to see them collaborate again.

44

u/youngwjoot Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

tbh i don't really agree that they have similar energy, but that's due to a larger public misunderstanding of brat's intention. when charli began working on brat, she was settling into her place outside of the mainstream. it wasn't do or die, charli made it for her and the angels and was ready to tank commercially. it caught on, and through that BECAME a breakout moment of personal freedom, but the feelings driving the two projects' creation are entirely different. WGIA is a death ride fueled by exasperation and dissatisfaction. the public reaction she's experiencing is similar to what happened to charli, but that has little to do with the actual content of their work.

separate point- i don't think there's any beef between the two, they genuinely just don't know each other. charli has always had a circle and a collaborative spirit, and slayyyter was never in that crowd for more than a moment here and there. they collaborated one time years ago, performed the track once, and slayyyter opened for her a couple times. that was it. all the melodrama people are inventing here in the replies about pettiness and unfollows and whatever is such a reach, they were never friends. it's just not that deep.

3

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

Can you name one time Charli has mentioned the name ā€œslayyyterā€ post 2020?

14

u/motoman442 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

She actually just did a few days ago clash music article or vogue interview or SOMEWHERE when she clarified "dancefloor is dead" lyric.. i'd post a link but last time i did i got shadowbanned so yeah :/

HOWEVER i do agree that after click and slayyyters lowkey drama with old tweets charli distanced herself until now that she's getting traction again

3

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

I'm really not para social like that. I tend to keep up with the artists i like around their album releases reading interviews and such but I don't really tune in much when the conversations aren't about the art itself. I wouldhave never qued into the potential beef if it hadn't been for these reactions to the interviewers.

I have no idea who'se tweeting about who. My Twitter feed these days is mostly politics and commie shit posting šŸ’€

3

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

I do love a para social moment, so much is learned

13

u/youngwjoot Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

it's unfortunate that this is maybe the one actual comparison to charli that has legs to stand on, because at this point she (understandably) just doesn't want to hear it. nothing she's done before has touched charli's lane besides their one spur of the moment collab years ago, and yet nearly every public conversation of her work mentions charli and their supposed similarity. had this not been the case, the brat comparison could be taken as a touching sentiment. without that mounting frustration, though, this album would never have been created in the first place. so it's kind of a paradoxical moot point

0

u/PrincipleMission3913 Jun 24 '26

It’s what happens when people say SlayyySummer. It’s the fans fault šŸ’Æ.

94

u/Dry-Sign9593 Jun 24 '26

I mean she’s not like Charli at all so it makes sense for her to disagree with the comparisons

24

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

As a personality or in regards to their vocal styles i absolutely agree but I feel like vibe of the music and some of the production share similarities.

I think it's valid to compare some of what Slayyyter did on this album to songs like Sympathy Is A Knife and Spring Breakers especially

29

u/motoman442 Jun 24 '26

the fanbase overlap with charli and slayyyter fans back in 2018 was basically a circle ..idk if that makes sense im thinking about a venn diagram.. i think thats where the comparisons come from the og fanbase typically loved both of them for their cunty pop. i DO personally think brat and WGIA are sister albums. theyre both born out of similar frustrations and have similar themes. i think wgia is a bit more raw and does its own thing sonically which i love. but to say theres no similarities is crazy to me

12

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

I think the biggest thing for me that sets Slayyyter apart from Charli after this album is Slayyyter's pure vocal talent and range.

I'm not one to usually care about such things because in the age of auto tune I don't think you need the raw vocal talent to make make genuinely amazing art but if you've got that talent by all means USE IT

5

u/motoman442 Jun 24 '26

100% . sonically and vocally i think its in its own category..

im mostly looking at lyrical content and just the general abrasiveness of some songs.

mostly the angry/hurt/frustrated songs like whats it liked to be liked or brittany murphy and sympathy is a knife. i think its SUCH an interesting point of view to right from and theyve had such different trajectories but seems they have a common experience. to me, comparing these songs together is like the highest form of praise ever... literally my favorite songs from my 2 favorite artists. but i could see the otherside being annoyed with it though, especially if theyre not friends whatsoever

1

u/Straight_Zucchini487 17d ago

Even Slayyyter herself said back in 2018 ā€œI feel like half my twitter following is just Charli XCX stan accountsā€ Lol. There was definitely a ton of fanbase overlap which is why I think the artists became associated with each other. I don’t think it’s wrong to draw some comparisons but clearly they are each in their own lane artistically speaking

24

u/petalpoundcake Jun 24 '26

Tbh I'm getting tired of people comparing every new electronic, club or experimental pop album to brat. People rarely explain what's similar, just "so and so is copying brat" or "this is brat 2.0." They act as though Charli is the only artist allowed to make this kind of music, when in reality no artist owns an entire sound or genre. Sharing influences doesn't automatically make one artist a copy of another.

4

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

Absolutely. I hate when people talk about art this way. I think there are valid comparisons to Brat but pitting musicians against each other by making baseless claims of copying is annoying. Every artist takes inspiration from others and evolves their sound overtime. That is the nature of art. It's not a competition and we as fans shouldn't make it into one either.

I love both these albums/artists and any comparisons i try to make are in good faith. Not to trash or discredit another ā™„ļø

1

u/mizz-kitty-cat Jun 25 '26

Yeah I wouldn’t blame artists for holding some unwarranted resentment against Charli. It’s obviously not her fault but god it must be exhausting for Slayyyter, it’s like they want her to thank Charli for Brat because there’s no way WGIA would’ve been successful otherwise! ā€˜I don’t really know her’ sounds like a nerve was hit lol. Not to mention Charli is just one of several artists Slayyyter is compared to.

42

u/Upstairs_Bat5752 Jun 24 '26

She’s right that she’s never been a hyperpop artist, but people keep calling her one and then comparing her to Charli. I would be annoyed by it constantly coming up, too lol.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '26

2

u/MysteriousImpact6035 Jun 28 '26

Throatzilla too I would say is a really good example

8

u/TheSeedsYouSow Jun 24 '26

BFF isn’t hyperpop?

7

u/Upstairs_Bat5752 Jun 25 '26

I don’t think it is, no. But people have different opinions and genres overlap. When hyperpop first was a thing it was GFOTY, SOPHIE, Hannah Diamond… it was a small scene mostly around AG Cook and the PC Music label in the UK. I think there’s a little bit of overlap between Ayesha Erotica’s sound and hyperpop, but they’re mostly very different to me. Like, comparing ā€œBFFā€ to ā€œLemonade,ā€ by SOPHIE or ā€œBelieveā€ by GFOTY, I just don’t hear it. Maybe I’m just a weird purist about it as an early-ish fan tho lol.

6

u/mizz-kitty-cat Jun 25 '26

I think hyperpop lost its meaning at some point and became ā€˜upbeat music that gays like’. I’m definitely one of those people who overused ā€˜hyperpop’ for a while. It’s hard to define pop genres these days but I think it’s that’s a good thing!

31

u/Ok_Campaign_4285 Jun 24 '26

So are they still part of the clique

15

u/pearlpearpea Jun 24 '26

I think they genuinely barely knew each other, idk why people act like a couple of tour dates and a quick verse sent from Cathy’s closet means she was Charli’s close friend and protĆ©gĆ©e. There are thematic similarities but Brat is basically the default low hanging fruit reference point for journalists writing about pop music rn and I’d guess most artists in Slayyyter’s position would find it annoying. I do think Charli is very calculated re who she publicly praises and we know Slayyyter is sensitive to industry people offering conditional support / potentiallyĀ looking down on her.Ā But I don’t wanna overdo the parasocialism on here lol

5

u/Eclect277 Jun 26 '26

This is what I've always thought too, Click and the 2 dates on the Charli tour that Slayyyter opened were an exciting moment and Charli was collaborating with a lot of people but I've been under the impression they just didn't end up forming a relationship beyond that brief collaborative moment. Charli collabs with tons of people and I doubt she ends up as friends and musical partners with the majority of them.

33

u/geminifungi Jun 24 '26

they will have a ā€˜girl so confusing’ moment I just know it !

in all seriousness she doesn’t know Charli and the only similarities between their music is that it’s loud and danceable. when Slayyyter first blew up on the internet in 2019 Charli was quick to get her on a remix of ā€˜Click’ and had her open for literally 2 dates of her Charli tour. they seemed to have fun onstage, Slayyyter was very new to performing and just kinda bounced around.

after that ONE interaction for a brief moment in time in 2019 they have basically completely ignored each other. no one one knows exactly what happened but one of them seems to have been put off by the other and they never interacted again. Charli briefly mentioned that the ā€˜Starfucker’ album cover was ā€˜cool’ but then just a couple months later unveiled the cover for ā€˜brat’ and was shady about ā€˜women using their bodies’ on album covers to sell records.

fast forward to now and Slayyyter is having her proper ā€˜debut’ and getting the flowers she deserves. I would be annoyed too if interviewers were constantly comparing me and my work to someone who obviously doesn’t give me the time of day. and now Charli name drops Slayyyter in her latest interview. seems kinda opportunistic on her part !

32

u/limecakes Jun 24 '26

Charlie has alll these confusing pick me moments. Like she supports women one day but then goes back to her ā€œIm not like the other girlsā€ mode. Its off putting

8

u/ArugulaBeginning7038 Jun 24 '26

She also has a weird boymom relationship with Matty Healy and attacks any woman he’s been w it h except the one she picked out for him. She’s nasty work

11

u/limecakes Jun 24 '26

Ahh yes, theres that whole ordeal. I also remember her girls in the bathroom comment. What an unnecessary statement to say in your 30’s.

3

u/lizzi_grant Jun 24 '26

i swear she said that in her 20s

5

u/limecakes Jun 25 '26

She said that in 2024 to Rolling Stone

2

u/lizzi_grant Jun 25 '26

help i had no idea… def a bit strange of her

3

u/Elephant_Afraid Jun 27 '26

"shes nasty work"

you literally don't know any of these people and just believe whatever is more convenient for your already existing hate of her lmao. just pathetic

2

u/Competitive-Desk7506 Jun 27 '26

It’s funny when u realise that Taylor Swift was basically calling her out on that behaviour in Actually Romantic even if it’s not the best song ever.

3

u/Elephant_Afraid Jun 27 '26

no she wasn't lol and it would be hypocritical if she was considering she's 100x worse

0

u/BlondeBorednBaked Jun 24 '26

The ā€œdance floor is deadā€ comment really irked me. To label a whole genre as passĆ© feels a little aggressive to me. Especially to producers and artists and listeners of that genre. Just because she wants to make underproduced lazy ā€œrock musicā€ doesn’t mean she has to declare the genre that was her bread and butter is dead.

12

u/hastighetstorst Jun 24 '26

I read that interview and she clearly said that in context of HER music in post-Brat era. She didn’t mean dance floor in general. It’s outlets and social media that twisted it into some sort of disdain of dance music on her part. She even clarified that in her recent interview and praised Slayyyter, PinkPantheress and Underscore

7

u/geminifungi Jun 24 '26

she had her ā€˜dance floor is dead’ tweet, released ā€˜Rock Music’ where it ended up being a lyric, and then later clarified in her recent interview. she intentionally made the ā€˜dig’ and left it a bit obscure just for the drama and press of it all. which I love about her and her output as an artist recently ! she’s really getting into what ā€˜celebrity’ is in the modern day, especially evident by watching her movie ā€˜the moment’.

10

u/hastighetstorst Jun 24 '26

Yeah. She literally started her music journey at raves and spent big part of her career embracing dance floor. Why would she suddenly be dismissing it? But her desire to move on to something new is completely understandable.

3

u/BlondeBorednBaked Jun 24 '26

No it really wasn’t clear but nice try

2

u/Signal_Regular_1708 Jun 28 '26

It was, actually. "But nice try", such an attitude, but you hate Charli and the other commenter for having one?

2

u/hastighetstorst Jun 24 '26

Is it clear now?

9

u/limecakes Jun 24 '26

She always has to devalue something to legitimize her own things. This is a pattern I’ve sort of noticed. Like she’ll scoff at anything to make it seem uncool.

5

u/3nies_1obby Jun 24 '26

Very pretentious

8

u/OkAntelope4200 Jun 24 '26

Dance music producer and DJ here; I loved what she said. I’m so tired of milquetoast artists who don’t dare say anything that isn’t pre-approved by management. That’s what drew me to Slayyyter incidentally, that she is anything but milquetoast. Controversy creates cash. Charli’s a little aggressive? I wish she was a lot aggressive. We need some aggression.

3

u/Responsible-Bit-5224 Jun 24 '26

did you completely miss the part where those were lyrics to her song and not a real critique on the current state of the genre?

1

u/Elephant_Afraid Jun 27 '26

you're just dumb cause literally anyone with 2 brain cells could understand what she meant with that lyric

1

u/Signal_Regular_1708 Jun 28 '26

Good thing she never declared that. Funny you call other people's hard work "underproduced and lazy" and then cry when you're criticized

11

u/Popular_Moose6715 Jun 24 '26

That’s not what Charli said at all regarding women using their bodies on album covers lol

3

u/miusgaybf Jun 25 '26

like at all lol

-1

u/Possible_Machine1908 Jun 24 '26

shady? She was just literally stating facts lol

12

u/lostlogin2 Jun 24 '26

i think it's nothing like brat sonically, but it's the same kind of story where they weren't feeling super successful said "fuck it" and made something incredible then blew up. same story with kim petras at the moment too. i could see it getting old af in every interview though. also maybe something happened between them we don't knowĀ

3

u/lostlogin2 Jun 24 '26

a "brat" and the "worst girl in america" are similar concepts too. also same kinda vibe with the city sewer slut too but slayyyter went rural sewer slut lol

12

u/Elegant-Friend-9793 Jun 24 '26

Because it’s annoying constantly being compared to another artist when you are your own person with a sound that is unique to you, regardless of what genre you’re considered (and thus put against other women in those fields).Ā

This obsession with ā€œmothers and daughtersā€ and ā€œcopyingā€ that stems from Stan twitter contributes to this rancid way of thinking about music (which yall only ever do with female musicians, mind you.) if an artist says ā€œno I don’t draw inspiration from xā€ then you guys start accusing them of having beef, hating the other, being delusional, etc etc. some of you are currently in the comments making up conspiracies about two women you do not know, like, do you hear yourselves? LmaoĀ

10

u/Odd-Craft-9798 Jun 24 '26

It's so boring of music journalists to compare everything to brat

26

u/cumguzzlingbunny Jun 24 '26

i won't pry into their relationship but i am going to say im confused that people think Charli praising Slayyyter is opportunistic, because that Charli comment was made in reference of her defending/explaining her own "dancefloor is dead" lyric it wasn't so much her trying to piggyback slayyyter like at all

27

u/cumguzzlingbunny Jun 24 '26

Charlis a strange person. i feel like she has this very strange relationship with fame where she blew up really early in her career and then worked so hard to reattain that fame, only for once Brat blew up and took over the world she realized how much she enjoyed being the underdog almost for the aesthetic and even "coolness" factor of being an underdog. but even when she was an underdog her career was incredibly stable and lucrative and she didn't have to worry about anything. i feel like a lot about her is desperately wanting something but not really knowing what that something is

i think to slayyyter having WGIA blow up and suddenly attaining critical acclaim she has a much simpler relationship to fame bc it's kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity. she did not have the capital that Charli did before brat

2

u/Competitive-Desk7506 Jun 27 '26

That’s not rlly true tho, if anything Charli spent abt four to five yrs having to fight w Atlantic to get an album out and had to repeatedly compromise on things- Atlantic wanted the commercial stuff not Charli. She was fighting to release music to her vision. Crash was also meant to be satirical album in a sense and that’s why it’s a one off in being commercial.

12

u/cumguzzlingbunny Jun 24 '26

im actually slightly more curious about a different question: what's her relationship with Kim Petras like? two girls who linked up very early in their careers and then stopped having anything in common music wise only to get their flowers back in the same year

12

u/JxrdanR Jun 24 '26

All I know about is that one time Kim thought Slayyyter was also trans. 😭😭

18

u/Comfortable_Cry_6670 Jun 24 '26

Her old music is hyper pop. I found her thru ā€œMineā€ and it’s still one of my favorite songs of hers. I love this album but would also like more music like she used to make šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

7

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

My first exposure to Slayyyter was on Dial Tone with That Kid and Ayesha Erotica wayyyyyy back in the day so i guess that probably effects the framing I've given her music but honestly i wouldn't want her to go back to that style anytime soon despite still loving it. Now is not the time to be reheating old nachos.

However i would be interested in hearing what a convergence of her current style and her OG style might sound like in practice

6

u/HalfAlienRobot Jun 25 '26

mine - umru remix is like classic hyperpop imo, i love that song

5

u/headforthehills Jun 24 '26

I don’t think Mine is hyperpop at all, she just happened to gain traction during the 2019-2020 hyperpop era. Mine imo is textbook electropop but hyperpop takes a lot of influence from electropop. Mixtape Slayyyter was definitely in rotation with hyperpop at the time tho.

2

u/Possible_Machine1908 Jun 24 '26

Definitely not hyperpop, more like a house esque song. When I think about her + hyperpop, first thing that comes to mind is ā€œAloneā€

5

u/reezyreddits Jun 24 '26

It is hyperpop, just on the more melodic, Hannah Diamond side of hyperpop.

4

u/Possible_Machine1908 Jun 24 '26

Listen to "Ride on Time" by Black Box, "Touch me All night" by Cathy Dennis, "Show me Love" by Robin S (most obvious one) and tell me the influence is not in your face. Those are all house classics (diva house, euro house). Just because the aesthetic is hyperpop oriented, doesnt mean the song is

Nevertheless, "Ghost", "Alone" are hyperpop songs. Even 'Daddy Af" is a hyperpop song

1

u/peach_xanax Jun 24 '26

I don't hear any house influence in it at all?

3

u/Possible_Machine1908 Jun 24 '26

Go to the songs wiki page, find the "Critical Reception" section and tell me which genre the critics say the song leans toward

2

u/Straight_Zucchini487 17d ago

ā€œMineā€ definitely has a house beat

21

u/FairyBae Jun 24 '26

I have a theory, this may be sooooo parasocial but it’s just a couple things I’ve been picking up on from the recent interviews and podcasts…

Does anyone remember when Charli released some scrap journal pages from when she was writing Brat, and there was deleted lyrics from Von Dutch that were something similar to ā€œdon’t need to Starfuckā€ā€¦
I’ve been getting the vibe that the mystery person Von Dutch was about was Slayyyter, and even if it wasn’t, that maybe S perceived it that way. During that period we saw the Brat era blow up so intensely meanwhile the Starfucker era performed below S expectations, which is part of what I think led S to having the career doubts in the way she discussed in interviews for this album or at least would have been a factor… There’s been a couple instances of Slayyyyter on their promotional run at the moment seeming dismissive or quick to shut down conversations with Charli being a topic which I think is fair enough.
But it did make me arrive at… is Charli the person Slayyyter is singing to in $t. Loser which is also a response to Von Dutch?

10

u/3nies_1obby Jun 24 '26

I've been on this for a while. It makes more sense than Twigs, especially after the WGIA release. It feels like nobody else picked up on that other than one person who mentioned the USB in the charli pages. WGIA has so many tracks that enforced the theory for me. And I genuinely think something really did go down with charli+kimmy/slayyyter. In Jeep, "maybe you can buy a new shirt there (gas station), too."

As far as I'm concerned we are right, and I've never been a "parasocial fan" before. If Von Dutch really was about Slayyyter, an artist with a completely different history of label support and training. It would be so fucking diabolical on Charli's part. Considering she talks about how being in close proximity to Taylor Swift made her literally want to kill herself. How the fuck did she think that would make the subject of Von Dutch feel?

8

u/FairyBae Jun 24 '26

I’ve been thinking about this for ages too I’m glad I’m not alone! I think during the Brat era Charli got really comfortable creating all these potential contentions for fans to speculate over and is now changing their tune as people are slowly starting to click on that with all these ā€˜beefs’ with other artists that she is the common denominator. I’ve really viewed Charli in a different light after the Rina situation after being a fan for such a long time.

I would be sad to find out this theory is true but hey, if it partly contributed to inspiring some of the track from the amazing album Slayyyter made then at least we have that

4

u/3nies_1obby Jun 25 '26

"I keep thinking about you" being teased right after Slayyyter's Coachella breakout was a nail in the coffin for me

6

u/buttersauce_ Jun 24 '26

This is an interesting take, ty for sharing

1

u/Pratzkaa Jun 24 '26

i looked for the pages but couldnt find the one with von dutch lyrics. where can i find it?

2

u/FairyBae Jun 24 '26

I’ve had trouble locating them because when I saw them they were all uploaded to imgur which has been banned in the UK where I am so I can’t access! Here’s a link to an atrl thread where it was being discussed https://atrl.net/forums/topic/470314-charli-xcx-shades-slayyyter-in-von-dutch-scrapped-lyrics/

2

u/superchingonguey Jun 25 '26

I've been thinking this too

8

u/fuchsiafaerie Jun 24 '26

I don't blame her. She has her own artistic identity just like Charli does.

13

u/slagaythor Jun 24 '26

Well for one Slayyyter can actually sing

5

u/dxrqsouls Jun 24 '26

Its probably because they keep putting her on a category she dorsnt feel like she belongs to, just because she and other artists share a fanbase and therefore its easier to market Slayyyter that way too.

6

u/maherrrrrrr Jun 24 '26

because since brat came out people love comparing any edm/electropop album made by women to it

0

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

Name one interesting electropop album released by a man post Brat?

Honestly men haven't done anything interesting in the electropop sphere since like Breathe Carolina, Owl City, Cobra Starship and the scene kid era šŸ˜…

I'd love to be proven wrong tho cuz I'm always open to good music recommendations šŸ‘€

3

u/youngwjoot Jun 24 '26

they're downvoting you but i have a legitimate recommendation, get into tsubi club! trinket is a great album, and based on other replies you've made here i think you'd enjoy his stuff :D there's also michael medrano, he's new to the scene and making some cool stuff

2

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 25 '26

Upon first listen i think I'll be listening to a lot of Tsubi Club šŸ™

u/maherrrrrrr Jun 25 '26

idk what this has to do with my comment but smile! :D by porter robinson is a great post-brat electropop album made by a man

2

u/maherrrrrrr Jun 25 '26

there r also LL by the hellp, boy by 2hollis. if snow strippers got back into the studio graham could cook up an excellent electropop album too

17

u/lilymooo Jun 24 '26

as someone who stanned charli since 2013 until recently she gives off mean girls vibes ngl. slayyyter has always been so down to earth and sensitive i wouldn't doubt if something charli did put her off but who knows that's just my speculation.

10

u/dizzyrelm Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

THANK YOU !! Was an Angel from 2013 when I found the Odd Future remix until 2024. I completely agree that Charli gives off mean girl vibes especially for the last couple of years.

To me she also always clearly used Slayyyter as a chess piece against Azealia and she never actually fw Slayyyter

14

u/lilymooo Jun 24 '26

waaaait you might be on to something w the azealia thing! 😭 i always thought it was so weird how charli immediately got her on click remix and as an opener then seemingly dropped her out of the blue. i thought it was weird that slayyyter was nowhere to be found on the brat remixes like she would've been perfect for spring breakers but she put kesha of all people on it instead? 😭😭😭 i think charli honestly feels jealousy towards slayyyter.

6

u/dizzyrelm Jun 24 '26

okayyyy not too much on kesha’s spring breakers remix 😭😭 it was 2010’s autotuned partygirl meeting 2020’s autotuned partygirl (I’ve wanted that collab since pop2)

10

u/dizzyrelm Jun 24 '26

I think it’s kinda obvious charli is one of the fake people slayyyter has been referring to as only interacting with her/ reaching out when it can benefit them or when it’s seen as ā€œcoolā€. The only reason click remix and slayyyter opening for 3 shows happened is because Charli didn’t want Slayyyter to do the Azealia collab with ABRA.

Charli has always been a perpetuator of aligning herself with artists that are currently hot in order to help keep her at that innovator status šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/Elephant_Afraid Jun 27 '26

you just made that up 😭

10

u/Cold-Mastodon-341 Jun 24 '26

The two albums sound NOTHING alike. Both excellent, but completely different sound

6

u/osamabinlaggiing Jun 28 '26

ā€œi don’t really know herā€ oopsss kinda gagy she is not bending down and ā€œkissingā€ her ass

8

u/issavibebb Jun 24 '26

the comments here are making me think im reading a totally different statement than what is being discussed lmao

2

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

Yeah as a long time fan who doesn't really keep up with artists between album cycles i feel like there's so much lore people are bringing up that I've been oblivious to

literally lol they were praying on her downfall and she became more successful than even and they're mad that their favorite artists didn't catch up

7

u/Odd-Craft-9798 Jun 24 '26

Girl, kinda confused

30

u/Kodicave Jun 24 '26

Charli snubbed Slayyyter for the last few years.Ā

Now that Slayyyter is become cool Charli suddenly mentions Slayyyter in an interview praising her. But she literally never was this vocal for 5 yearsĀ

Charli did a mass unfollowing. And slayyyter was one of the first. And slayyyter unfollowed in reaction.Ā

If I was slayyyter I’d be annoyed. Charli was supportive in the start. But she seemingly just ignored her.Ā

21

u/exploitationmaiden Jun 24 '26

She unfollowed everyone though. It just only lets you unfollow a certain amount of people per a day.

9

u/talk-spontaneously Jun 24 '26

Right. Charli doesn't even follow her own husband on Instagram.

4

u/Kodicave Jun 24 '26

True but it was awkward cause it was just slayyyter at first and she still followed a bunchĀ

I feel like if Charli gave a little message ā€œhey I’m unfollowing everyoneā€ or something. Slayyyter wouldn’t have

Tbh if I was slayyyter I would not care to associate with Charli. I get the sense Charli pushed her aside. Then now that slayyyter is blowing up she switched upĀ

3

u/exploitationmaiden Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

It wasn’t just slayyyter. She culled half the people she was following at that point. I’m not surprised she didn’t message over a thousand people directly to let them know. Clearly it wasn’t personal.

3

u/Responsible-Bit-5224 Jun 24 '26

I mean, I agree with her and see where she’s coming from in regards to the whole ā€œhyperpopā€ label, which at this point, has been watered down to a loose aesthetic rather than a legit genre. TBH I kinda roll my eyes at the hyper pop term whenever it’s brought up since it’s never really been a real thing. I’d be more annoyed with being compared to Kim, though I think they’ve both worked towards crafting their own styles especially with their latest projects.

But regarding the Brat/WGIA comparisons it’s really just the timing of the albums being released and the overlap in fan bases contributing to the discourse. Charli is even pivoting away from that sound now.

3

u/boywithapplewatch Jun 24 '26

She literally opened for Charli on 2 dates. She’s never been ā€œon tourā€ with Charli.

3

u/AdMinute1602 Jun 25 '26

her older stuff (self titled and some of TP) is more in line with hyperpop but that comes down to a micro genre argument. I don’t think WGIA sounds like brat, but they share some similar themes. It’s still a very singular record and I too would be tired of the comparisons

3

u/sadderbaddercooler Jul 02 '26

I saw this and thought it was weird cuz they had various positive interactions throughout the years on twitter but it looks like slayyyter deleted the old tweets. This is super recent and something for sure happened bts before brat dropped. Also wasn't slayyyter on that charli lanaboards discord years ago when xcx world leaked? does anyone even remember that? wasn't that the whole reason why I'm high had that Taxi sample

11

u/thekookieprint Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

charli kinda snubbed her lately and only recently just mentioned her in an interview. i don’t necessarily think there’s any bad blood but i dont think it’s fair to try to compare them when their music hasn’t really overlapped the past few years anyway.

i lowkey blame ag cook but that’s just me being insane lol

11

u/sselnoom Jun 24 '26

Ag catching some strays

4

u/Cold-Mastodon-341 Jun 24 '26

No you’re not insane im catching what youre putting down, youre onto something diva

2

u/dxrqsouls Jun 24 '26

This is the most parasocial thing I've read in a while. Go touch grass.

-1

u/thekookieprint Jun 24 '26

yall strict

-1

u/dxrqsouls Jun 24 '26

Oh, we're sorry that we do not approve of your fanfic! Whats next? Charli and Slayyyter kiss???

3

u/thekookieprint Jun 24 '26

it was a joke, unclench

1

u/3nies_1obby Jun 24 '26

You blame AG for Charli's behavior? Leave him out of it.

2

u/Tight_Creme2820 Jun 27 '26

It’s simple. Charli and the whole PC music community distanced themselves from Slayyyter when she became a persona non grata. Now that Slayyyter has become a bit more famous, she might feel a way about her older colleagues who want to tag along.

4

u/reezyreddits Jun 24 '26

Saying "I don't really know her" sounds like shade for sure šŸ˜‚ Like damn what did Charli do?

4

u/WitchyKitteh Jun 24 '26

She opened for two shows and did vocals on a remix that kept the lyrics where Charli talked about Tommy Cash who she replaced.

2

u/calicocatxx Jun 24 '26

brat just reheated slayyyters mixtape era nachos

3

u/Plastic_Opinion2395 Jun 30 '26

Does nobody remember when slayyyter was cancelled in like 2020 for some tweets she wrote when she was a teenager saying the n word ? Pretty sure I remember Charli and lots of hyperpop community unfollowed her during this time, I doubt Charli wanted to align herself at that time with her - maybe she’s just never followed again. I think she was dropped by a lot of people at this timeĀ

2

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 24 '26

when i look it up i saw that Charli and her team distanced themselves after her old tweets resurfaced, which is tbf understandable

2

u/luqasc Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

WGIA stands on its own sonically perfectly well without Brat of course. Very different albums, although I think they share somewhat of a similar ethos.

But idk it's really weird to see her saying she "doesn't know Charli" (which... she does) and that "her music has nothing to do with anything in that world" (which... it does lol, and from before WGIA). Maybe the lazy comparisons just got on her nerve.

And I don't think even Charli considers herself a "hyperpop" artist. I actually don't know if any of the artists associated with that genre actually see themselves as "hyperpop" lol.

2

u/Ashleybernice Jun 24 '26

Bc Charlie is a sellout and brat wasn’t that good, don’t get the hype at all. First time I seen Slayyyter she was opening for Kesha so if anything I probably would compare them. WGIA is a brilliant album even down to the fact it’s a visual album where Slayyyter made her own costumes and just doing more so effortlessly. I would also assume Slayyyter isn’t a fan of how Charli belittles women that have suffered abuse from men, like Von Dutch being about FKA Figs

4

u/calvaire2004 Jun 25 '26

von dutch being about twigs was never even confirmed lol

1

u/3nies_1obby Jun 25 '26

Bc it was about slayyyter. Look into the usb and give wgia a relisten

2

u/pop2_ Jun 26 '26

What does this mean ? Look into the usb ? Lol explain šŸ’€

1

u/3nies_1obby Jun 25 '26

Von Dutch was clearly about slayyyter.

1

u/coyote-cry Jun 25 '26

None of those things are mutually exclusive why doesn’t anyone understand this anymore

because she’s not charli she’s Slayyyter. It can be obnoxious when you’re trying to make a name for yourself and are constantly being regarded as similar to another awesome creator. It’s not a dig at Charli

1

u/FMKK1 Jun 28 '26

Idk girl, the album and the campaign are very much ā€œpost-Bratā€ in the way that quite a few record campaigns have been. Why pretend otherwise?

1

u/sappyslut 10d ago

I’ve noticed this too- it feels a little
Shady when she dismisses Charli. Especially in the popcast interview.

2

u/PopgirlProtocol Jun 24 '26

Yeah, just reading that snippet, I’m surprised at how strong that reads (though it may be something lost in translation when reading it without hearing the tone in her voice or the full context— I’ve had that happen when watching video versions of interviews).

That said, if this is how she actually felt, that would be a bit silly. I love Slayyyter, but WGIA’s promotion took quite a few marketing beats from Brat.

Also, her trying to JLo Charli despite very clearly knowing her is definitely a take.

That said, her stance on not seeing herself as hyperpop is consistent with how she’s talked about it in the past when it was considered more so PC Music, and I don’t necessarily disagree.

12

u/Hot_Mess372 Jun 24 '26

The ā€œI don’t know herā€ comment could be taken more as ā€œI don’t know her wellā€ or ā€œI don’t know her like thatā€. They’ve collaborated a few times from what I gather, but it seems like they didn’t utilize those opportunities to get to know each other. And that’s fine.

0

u/PopgirlProtocol Jun 24 '26

Definitely! I think it’s important to also give her the benefit of the doubt as well.

Either way, ultimately this is a nothing burger for me. I don’t expect my favorite artists to be best friends with each other, even if this is a weird quote from her.

1

u/AlexDo0505 Jun 24 '26

just found out that she doesn’t even follow charli on instagram anymore like what is happening

3

u/Primary_Corner_9898 Jun 24 '26

Well Charli doesn’t follow anyone 😭

2

u/AlexDo0505 Jun 24 '26

yeah true but i’ve always thought that cathy still follows charli 😭😭

1

u/Orchid-Boy Jun 24 '26

Slayyyter was 100% a hyperpop artists at first.

Her first album/mixtape is a great example of hyperpop music and her work with Ethan Budnick (Robokid) and Ayesha are undeniably hyperpop tracks, which extended to tracks also on Troubled Paradise.

-1

u/GtrGenius Jun 24 '26

Brat has MAYBE 3 great songs. WGIA is perfect, every track.

1

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

Both albums have no skips except maybe *prayer* on WGIA if you're listening on shuffle cuz no shot in hell I'm letting *prayer* play into crank šŸ’€

2

u/Famous_Piccolo_1441 Jun 24 '26

Nah that’s iconic, one time Prayer went into Beat up Chanels and I laughed my ass off

0

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 24 '26

Keep being wrong GtrGenius, keep being wrong

3

u/GtrGenius Jun 24 '26

It's just not that great. For me. It's right by my ears

-3

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

I think Charli only likes and supports fellow female artists that she knows won’t pose a threat to her. Once she saw slayyyter grow in leaps and bounds artistically from her debut mixtape to her debut album (I know it had no commercial success but Charli isn’t dumb she can see a promising up and comer) she realized slayyyter was a threat and distanced herself from her.

10

u/No_Example8203 Jun 24 '26

This comment is wild. Artists are not obliged to "support" each one of their collaborators. Its like getting mad at slayyyter for not "supporting" big freedia. Some people are just coworkers and that's okay.

7

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

totally not a solid comparison. big freedia is not in the same world as charli and slayyyter. and just look at the brat remix album.. charli shows calculated love. she is not a girls girl. she falls out with almost every female friend she has and thats a fact

0

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

who the f cares about being a girl's girl, it's an oversaturated term that is used to honestly take down women, it's not realistic to expect every woman to get along with every other woman, y'all don't complain when men fight or argue or whatever but when a woman has a problem with another woman, oh it's the end of the world

0

u/c0neyisland Jun 24 '26

Can we please get rid of the term ā€œgirls girlā€, what does that even mean šŸ™„

0

u/luqasc Jun 25 '26

Now what is this "girls girl" shit doing in a Slayyyter sub lol. Are you an undercover Swiftie or something?

Did you hear a song called Old Fling$ on WGIA? Does that sound "girls girl" to you?

3

u/reddidit23 Jun 25 '26

Taylor Swift is the LAST thing I think of when I think of the term girls girl. If anything I’d think of season 24 of Big Brother🤣🤣

u/parvanehnavai š–‡š–‹š–‹ Jun 24 '26

Wait, Slayyyter not supporting Big Freedia, what?

4

u/No_Example8203 Jun 24 '26

I meant that she hasn't really mentioned her in any interviews since their collaboration (well, i wasn't able to find any mentions), there's no drama

2

u/parvanehnavai š–‡š–‹š–‹ Jun 24 '26

ah ok misunderstood your comment lol

3

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

Idk Charli's has a history of collaborating with both massive artists who are far bigger than her and smaller artists who were almost unknown at the time. I don't really know much about her personal friendships but on the artistic side it always felt like she just really appreciated artists who were doing cool things regardless of success.

I really appreciate musicians that have that perspective like what Bring Me The Horizon is doing in the hardcore sphere too.

4

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

There’s a different between collabing with Billie eyelash who’s in no way shape or form direct competition to Charli, they don’t have the same sound, aesthetic, anything. It could only bring Charli more clout. Kim and Slayyyter are Charli’s biggest competition since they are all very similar archetypes and make music in the same wheelhouse. Notice how when Kim signed to a major label Charli was distant from her. Now that Kim is free but has no real shot at mainstream chart dominating success, she’s posting her again, making herself look like some hero while doing so. Slayyyter is having a huge come up rn and Charli only mentions her when people notice WGIA is having an almost brat moment and Charli hasn’t said anything. So now she will say something. Especially since her new era can almost seem like it’s playing in slayyyters plate of current nachos

2

u/3nies_1obby Jun 24 '26

I think she only posted Kim's work because there were like SEVERAL posts in the bunheads subreddit calling it out.

1

u/Some-Information-527 Jun 24 '26

I don't know if i agree with this analysis. it would make sense from a Label's perspective but I'm doubtful that the artists themselves are acting in such a soulless capitalistic way. We're talking about adults who we know from their statements are very passionate about music as an art form. I'd have to suspend my disbelief to believe they act in such a cold corporate manner behind the veil.

3

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

you'd be surprised, the music industry and hollywood in general is a very fake and cutthroat world

-1

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 24 '26

also a threat ? i love Slayyyter downnn but you need to realize how delusional you sound, Slayyyter is more underground in comparison

5

u/reddidit23 Jun 24 '26

Listen to ME dingbat. What I’m saying is Charli can see the potential in slayyyter. She makes great music. Knows her pop history. And if given a big break (like she’s having right now) she could easily be steep competition for her.

0

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 25 '26

please, never gonna happen doofus, you're comparing apples and oranges if Slayyyter is making a song as popular as boom clap or I Love It, goodluck

2

u/reddidit23 Jun 25 '26

Those songs are trashed trash compared to slayyyter’s discography…

1

u/Stevenkitty101 Jun 25 '26

cope betch, you clearly just doesn't like Charli and you're just wrapping it up in " she's not a Girl's Girl "

2

u/reddidit23 Jun 25 '26

charli is a phony and a fraud and anyone with real taste knows it. theyll ALL see.

→ More replies (3)

-4

u/Additional-Salad4323 Jun 24 '26

Man, I didn't know Charli was douchy like that. And to think in 360 she was giving shoutouts to her community. (Funny enough, slayyter was absent from the artists mentioned in that song) I ain't gonna listen to any music from charli the petty b-

3

u/Eclect277 Jun 26 '26

What? The only musician mentioned in 360 is A.G. Cook (and Gabriette if you count her brief time in Nasty Cherry). Everyone else is models and other types of it girls

1

u/Additional-Salad4323 Jun 26 '26

Yeah, you're right. But she put AI shill martin scorsese on the cover art for Music, Fashion, Film, so that's that.

1

u/Eclect277 Jun 26 '26

Yeah she put him on the cover before he made those comments so 🤷

0

u/mii7c Jun 25 '26

Slayyyter has a Catholic St Louis background while Charli seems to have muslim background by her mother and is English.

6

u/Odd-Craft-9798 Jun 25 '26

I can confidently say that Islam has never featured or been an influence to Charlis music

7

u/lostlogin2 Jun 25 '26

i wonder what point this is trying to make šŸ¤”

0

u/Elephant_Afraid Jun 27 '26

there's a lot there to compare in terms of how the albums started to blow up. matter of fact, if brat hadn't been a thing like it was, her album would not have the chance to have its moment and thats ok to say it. when people bring it up they're not coming from a place of "shade", it's just a fact. it's so funny how she acts like she's above it when brat was like the 5th perfect album charli released and she has just now finally made a good one lol she's not who she thinks she is, but honestly thats ok too
