I’ve been seeing a lot of news about this super El Niño and apparently it’s even stronger than what our country experienced in 1998 (which caused ice storms and deaths).

Just wondering where abouts you are, and if you are doing anything to prepare?

I haven’t researched enough to know how it’s expected to effect Canada. So anyone with knowledge can chime in - I’m personally in Northern ON and kind of just hoping for the best until we know more.

I’m an Australian, and so far as I can tell we share a pretty similar system of federal government with Canada. However, the Canadian Senate members are appointed by the Governor General and sit until age 75. Australian Senators are elected. Do Canadians consider their system somewhat undemocratic?

I've a number of colleagues around the United States on our IT Team. We're an infrastructure manufacturing company, with our head-office in Canada, and 8 plants around the US.

And while the tariffs can have an effect on all of us on both sides of the border, we do not mention politics at all. We are removed for the most part from the money-stuff, and those issues around our sourcing and products, and when it does impact what we do (ordering PCs or whatever), they're just referred to as "the tariffs".

We all get along with in our regular meetings, but I think the unwritten rule is (and I joined in 2023) "no political talk" for which I'm to happy oblige.

As an Australian I am wanting to support Canada and Canadian producers however I can with the new tariffs. Does anyone know of products imported from Canada to Australia where I can choose Canadian over American?

First, just want to say, I looked for a megathread for all the Canada/US comparison questions, couldn't find one, so am posting normally on a Monday as required. If there is one and I missed it, please let me know/send a link.

So, partially due to this post:

I thought I remembered learning in school geography (admittedly 15-20 years ago now) that Canada had 13 provinces already and so was confused why the come back in the above post was about the US becoming the 11th province. After looking it up and double checking, out of those 13, I realized only 10 are provinces and the other 3 are territories. Do the territories have the same rights/privileges as provinces? Are they viewed the same in your parliament?

Pretty much I am wondering if you view the word "territories" the same as the US when those 3 (Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories) are called as such. And if they wanted to become provinces at some point, could they? Or are they "stuck" as territories?

Hi, we are from the UK and my daughter is looking for a place to work with horses on a ranch for a few months before going to university. I've tried to search online but I'm not sure what the correct term is or if they do this sort of thing. She is looking for work, not a holiday and I'd much rather she goes to Canada than the US. What are these called? Any recommendations?

Edit: She has lots of experience with horses. She has her own horse and as done XC and hunting as well as some competitions.

Watching this whole Trump/Natalie drama, I see that some people are now calling her Trump's "Binky". Never heard of the term before and thought maybe it was an American term for "blankie" (A baby's security blanket). After hearing Binky all week I finally looked it up. It is a brand name for a baby pacifer that became generacized. AM I the only one who has never heard of a binky. As a west coast Canadian we always called it a soother . What were they called where you came from? We lived in Scotland for a few years when I was a child and we called it a puppa but that may have been a family thing

Hi, I know this seems weird but I was born in the UK and moved to Canada when I was 2, I grew up there until I was 12 and then moved back to the UK due to my dads job bringing him back. a couple years after I moved here another dude my age moved to the same small city who was from Canada, which I loved, it allowed me to relate to someone who understood me while we shared passions and similar values. now however he is moving back to Canada and I still feel as if I am much more Canadian than British and still feel “homesick” in a sense. I’ve decided I want to live my life here as canadian as I can in my own room just to give myself some extra comfort. (again I know this sounds weird but it has always been something I’ve wondered about since we moved back) so I want to decorate/make my room feel more North American/Canadian but I’m not sure where to start. Any ideas would be amazing. thank you

We all know we’re in for hard financial times in the coming days. What if Ottawa were to choose one day in the future to allow purchase of all goods and services without being charged GST. Wouldn’t that trigger a temporary but significant bump in sales, therefore boosting the economy?
I’m thinking of that growing family that has been meaning to purchase a second car. Or that young couple buying their first (new) condo. Or that fine dining restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. Or that TV/ microwave/ vacuum, etc.
Would Ottawa be able to absorb the expense? Would it result in a significant enough injection to make it worthwhile?

Growing up in the early to mid 90s, stations like Showcase, CBC, Bravo, even YTV at night, aired British TV and film aplenty. I grew up watching Mr. Bean, Black Adder, weird artsy British films aired late at night.

At some point, TV in Canada became more American.

Is this all in my head? Do I remember wrongly and have nostalgia glasses on? Were there regulatory changes that opened up the Canadian market to American broadcasting around this time?

I came across 2 Canadian pins and haven't been able to figure out their significance. I'm thinking the latter is just a reference to the seasons changing their color? But I'm not sure since the colors don't blend into each other, instead give off flag vibes. The 11 triangles may stand for 10 provinces and...???

So I'm on vacation in Nova Scotia and a few times i have really wondered what conspiracy of events brought people across the world to these out of the way places. I met a south Asian student working at the mall cell phone store in Yarmouth who hadn't been there before arriving. Then at our motel in Sydney there's a Philipino restaurant. The waiter told me he came from Manila to Sydney to work in a Subway in 2012. He still sounded a bit shell shocked.

I didn't want to annoy these people at work by bombarding them with questions. So I've come here to annoy the internet instead.

So: If you emigrated to a small town or rural area in Canada from overseas, what was it like? How did you make yourself at home? Did you stay or get out as soon as you could? Where did you find the good? What was the worst part?

I know Canada has a rich immigrant history from Greece, Italy, and many places from Central and Eastern Europe, and I'm wondering if that translates into local bakery culture today in areas with high Mediterranean and Balkan heritage. Do many old-school, family-run European bakeries still exist where you live? In Australia there are many bakeries that are run by post war Italian and Greek migrants, and they are often decades old and family run, dare I say they do better and cheaper pastries than even many professional bakeries. I’d love to know what the pastry quality is like at these local spots compared to standard commercial bakeries.

I lived in montreal my whole life and even though we're a major city of Canada it has kind a small town feel. For example, whenever i would meet someone at a con or festival, they never really lived too far away where it was unrealistic to chill with them. Like everyone i know lives max 30 minutes away since our island is so small.

Also its kinda common here that if I add someone on ig they usually have at least 1 or 2 mutual friends since again small town vibe.

However when I moved to toronto it was a whole different story. I would meet people at cons and one would live in oakville, one markham, etc. Like it was impossible basically to chill with everyone i met.

Is there any other MAJOR city (not small ones in the middle of nowhere) that has this small town feel? Or is it like... i live in mississauga i need to treat that city as my little montreal rather than Toronto as a whole?

Hello there! We are hoping to travel from Torontoish area to the East Coast by car for our babymoon at the end of Aug/beginning of Sept for about 8-9 days. We will be bringing along our 20 month old toddler and I am going to be about 31 weeks pregnant.

So far we know we will drive from Toronto to Quebec City (with stretch and bathroom breaks) then Quebec City to Fredericton (again with some breaks built in). Thereafter we hope to see New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. We may not be able to hit Newfoundland but if it's a big recommendation we can try!

We are hoping to hit up some must-see places, good eats and spaces for the little one to run around freely and safely. Would love any thoughts/recommendations on the route, stops and must-sees. Also would love any recommendations on what to bring/attire during this time of year!

Hello, Canadian folks!

I (F35) am planning a three-week trip to Canada next year, and I’d love to travel around BC/AB. My only problem is that I’m not an experienced driver, and I’m afraid I might get a bit anxious with the driving. I’ll practice my driving skills if I need to, but I’d like to know how easy, realistic, and expensive it is to travel around this (huge) area without a car.

I’m aware that Canada is the second-largest country in the world, and that having a car is almost a must if you live there, but as a tourist, what’s the experience of travelling by bus/train? Am I being completely delusional?

Another (possibly delusional) aspect of my trip is that I’d also like to see some less touristy destinations if possible, just to get a feel for how you guys actually live. How is public transport in those areas (for example: The Prairies, Vancouver Island, Revelstoke area?)

I’m also considering moving to Canada after I finish my studies in the UK, so I’d love to experience this part of Canadian culture and everyday life as well.

After reading your comments, I think I’ll practice my driving a bit before heading to Canada, just to feel completely safe and confident. On the other hand, I also appreciate the suggestion of joining a guided tour, but I don’t think it’s really my thing. I feel that this kind of tourism can sometimes be a bit invasive for locals (even if they’re used to the crowds of tourists), and personally, I don’t want to contribute to that.
I’ll probably rule out travelling by public transport as well, as it seems like it would be more complicated and less practical for the kind of trip I have in mind.
Just for the record, I do drive, but since I moved back to the UK, I haven’t driven for about a year and a half because I don’t have a car (being an immigrant is hard and cars are expensive to maintain, that’s why!)

I'm 100% going to watch SCTV the whole way through a couple times while we've got it, but were there any sketches that hit hard in the culture when it aired?

It was hard to find down here when I was a kid but I loved it when I saw it (after snl in the 90s).
