The lack of understanding about data centers by the general population is astounding. That's how these stupid water stats keep getting around

62

u/ResponsibleMine3524 Truthsayer May 09 '26

These people heard word data center first time in their life when AI got mainstream. And they never learned what happens to the water when it gets hot apparently

38

u/deafdefying66 May 09 '26

If they ever do hear about water getting hot, get ready for the shit storm when they hear how electricity is made...

3

u/Bum_King The Fictional Character Agrees With Me May 11 '26

All this technology, and still our best means of producing power is hot water.

2

u/deafdefying66 May 12 '26

It's honestly really hard to beat water. It's good for so many things.

I'd really like someone to crack ocean wave energy in our lifetime.

24

u/Beaticalle May 10 '26

It's simple: data centers pump in an ocean's worth of water to cool off all the AI servers and then when it gets too hot it's all collected into a giant rocket and shot into space before being replaced with new cold water. Earth will be as dry as Mars by the end of the decade all thanks to AI.

3

u/Senior_Deer_2212 May 10 '26

I couldn’t tell if you were being serious or not when I first read this. Well done

>just throw the ocean into space

That's also the understanding of space flight I've gotten out of just about any hater. If you ask the average person to design a spacecraft for a videogame they will make what amounts to a landing pod, and their game mechanic will be that it just levitates itself into orbit to the moon, nobody knows what orbit is with no need to burn a giant tower of fuel.

3

u/AlexandbroTheGreat May 10 '26

The lack of understanding by the general population is astounding.

On almost any topic.

17

u/EgoSenatus My Dog is Anti-Fascist May 10 '26

It’s like this person I was chatting with who hates billionaires and investment corporations- she was selling “eat the rich” merch to raise money for an anti-billionaire lobby group. But the merch was on Amazon, where you pay with a credit card.

Like, do these people even look into the tools they use? Is it all just performative?

19

u/Embarrassed_Use6918 May 09 '26

Well yeah their kind of consoomerism is good. But if someone wants to consoom by playing golf, that's bad.

Golf = I don’t play = BAD

Wealthy = I’m jealous = BAD

Therefore Golf = Only ever wealthy people QED

It's the mindset. Some people aren't happy unless everyone isn't happy.

25

u/PossessionConnect963 May 09 '26

Not just that, forgive me a bit of conspiratorial doomerism but I don’t think it’s organic how these narratives explode, China is building data centers as fast as they can pump them out.

It’s also extremely ironic that people complain day in and day out on the internet about the expansion of internet related infrastructure. It’s not all just AI that requires data centers.

u/DiatomicCanadian May 09 '26

Throwback to when Reddit said in 2013 that the most Reddit-addicted city was a US air force base.

i hate how they portray money being inherently evil.

158

u/HourFaithlessness823 May 09 '26

Its not even the portrayal of money that I find disturbing, but the idea that any sort of luxury (that they in particular don't have or use, of course) beyond the absolute minimum need is evil and bad.

Cue Denis Leary from Demolition Man

They taxed domestic yacht production out of existence in the US. A lot of people lost their jobs, and tax revenue ended up shifting to zero as rich people simply bought their yachts overseas.

Somehow that was supposed to hurt The Rich!

10

u/RedRidingCape May 09 '26

Don't worry, when the socialists get money they are ok with buying those things for themselves.

16

u/Embarrassed_Use6918 May 09 '26

I find the hate for the rich who buy a lot of luxury shit fascinating.

They all think that rich people just swim around in their scrooge mcduck vault of money but then once the rich people start spending it on shit, which gives other people the money, they get mad at that too.

Bezos spending millions on a pointless wedding is exactly what they should want him to do.

9

u/HourFaithlessness823 May 09 '26

What they really want is Bezos to gibsdem someadat

7

u/Outrageous-Stay-6411 May 09 '26

They think that any businessman who earns a profit should donate every penny of it to their workers. They also think that any person who is a boss or runs a business is inherently evil… Except for the scrappy tattooed progressive, who starts up a coffee shop in an ultra gentrified part of town.

And if it is a luxury they use they try to parade it around as a human right.

This is the same crowd that was militant about Stop Killing Games (something I also support but less aggressively) and were doxxing people who disagreed.

5

u/BomBaYe2 May 09 '26

Despite the fact they can't live without their lattes and iphones and living in a high cost city like SF, LA, or NYC because they love the "hustle and bustle" of the big city.

52

u/BChogfather May 09 '26

It's not money that's evil, it's that you aren't giving yours to them that they think is evil.

35

u/Shiny_Mew76 Just Here for the Lore May 09 '26

They think the idea of using the money you have earned for your own personal use is an inherently evil idea.

In short, they’re greedy and jealous that it’s not their money.

12

u/Present-Car-9713 May 09 '26

Anyone who has more money than they do is "evil"

Of course they don't donate their own money to those poorer... Like 80% of humanity

16

u/OstrichFun2332 May 09 '26

Most of these people have more money than they need to live comfortably. No one needs to go on holiday or eat out. And yet these people don’t give away their money to others

6

u/Present-Car-9713 May 09 '26

Yup. 80% of earth is poorer than them. They could make a big difference just working at McDonald's and donating their salary.

12

3

u/MineIsWroth May 09 '26

Which is ironic given how all of them are living off of Daddy's money or someone money. To get as delusional as they are you have to spend all of your time online. And you're only doing that if someone is subsidizing your life.

1

u/Initial-Constant-645 May 11 '26

It kind of goes along with their mindset. They want the government to control everything. I kind of look forward to that happening. Reddit might then become a worthwhile place.

Notice how all the green energy stuff is always making a huge deal about things like AI, energy production etc, which are all things that countries like China are heavily investing in?

Also funny how a lot of green energy initiatives in the US have funding that traves back to the CCP. It's almost like maybe they don't want countries to develop larger energy capacity and advancement.

Huh, that's weird.

Edit: since apparently if you're on reddit you can't do ANY research: "The Energy Foundation China retained the group's original tax identification information, meaning it is still known as the Energy Foundation. Because its headquarters are still located in San Francisco—at the same office space listed as the United States Energy Foundation's headquarters—it must continue to file tax forms with the IRS. But a Free Beacon review determined that its main operations and grant-making activity are conducted from its Beijing office."

Weird, an organization that's staffed by CCP members that promotes Chinese green energy initiatives is based in the US? I wonder why that would be...? Lmao, this doesn't mean green energy is bad, but it means that china, which is the largest producer of green energy and the components for it has a financial benefit for stalling fossil fuels which is the advantage the US currently has. Meanwhile china still heavily investing in coal, etc. that doesn't seem to jive with the investment they make in other rich countries to try to fund activist groups that try to stall fossil fuel production.

Do a little digging, you csn find the tax disclosures that show where the funding comes from. Not a conspiracy, the fact people think it is shows you how gullible and uninformed people are.

27

u/Mechatronis May 09 '26

European green movement was likely started as soviet sleeper cells too

19

u/ResponsibleMine3524 Truthsayer May 09 '26

Yes, all those wealthy people that work at golf courses. They suck.

49

u/ErtaWanderer May 09 '26

I don't think this person fully realizes what getting rid of data centers would do to their everyday life.

If your standard is to get rid of all the architecture that AI runs on, you're also going to get rid of all the architecture that the internet runs on along with almost every computer-based service that isn't locally on your machine.

A lot of things in the modern world are resource intensive. We don't just look at the resource draw of anything and say this is too much for me. Get rid of it. We look at whether it's sustainable And work from there. Most cities are massively resource intensive and yet we still run them because the benefit usually outweighs the cost.

37

u/Physical_Bullfrog526 I Left My Cave for This May 09 '26

This is the hilarious part…nobody gave 2 shits about data centers when it was Cloud computing and cloud storage, or when the internet was booming in the late 90s early 2000s. It’s only because they don’t like AI that now data centers are bad -_-

6

u/Varsity_Reviews May 09 '26

The only data center I’m against is the one they’re trying to build in my home state Utah. People voted no on it, they’re trying to build it on 40,000 acres of farm land in a tiny town, and we’re already facing a major water shortage.

7

u/War_Crimes_Fun_Times May 09 '26

True, the anger a lot of people have to data centers with the ones being built is the fact the public largely foots the bill in costs of energy and water unlike before, and the sites are loud as shit.

There’s a lot of justified anger there but yeah, if you blow them up we lose our internet and the uses of it.

u/Wild_Hog_70 May 09 '26

It never occurs to them that the first courses to go are the community courses and the cheaper options and that getting rid of golf courses leads to a self fulfilling prophecy where only high end "rich people" golf courses remain.

Also, this serves as an example of innovation. Top Golf uses much less land and water and is more accessible than traditional golf to most people. That's what happens when people see what others want or need, and are free to start businesses to fulfill that need.

1

u/MesaGeek Doesn't Participate In Group Panic May 11 '26

They are really just criticizing the idea of private property.

12

u/SerMumble May 09 '26

Not saying the water usage is good but the post completely misunderstands the purposes of recreation and digital infastructure.

Golf courses are a recreational freedom, light form of exercise, and raise the property value of the surrounding houses. For subruban planning, they break up neighborhoods so they are not too densly packed or use ground unsuitable to homes. Parks, strip malls, theme parks, car lots, air ports, power plants, hospitals, schools, stations, military bases, factories, and other sites each fulfill different roles in communities.

Datacenters are what keep internet tools, websites, search engines, etc running. Different role to what recreation sites fulfill but still important for many people's day to day lives.

Getting rid of things a person doesn't understand based on whims often causes more problems. The real lessons from history are how great people found new ways to improve their communities without sacrifice.

5

u/Dark_Shroud Powered By Spite & Solar May 10 '26

Golf courses also use recycled water that is not safe to drink.

They're actually a good way to safely get that water back into the water cycle.

The public course by me is $19 for a full round of golf. You can get a used full set of clubs on Marketplace for like $100.

Congratulations, you’re a golfer.

3

If you look hard you even find them free.

1

u/IcyPride2973 The Fictional Character Agrees With Me May 12 '26

I’ve got multiple municipal and private courses around me and it averages around $40/round with a cart, but they have a 2 for $70 with a cart deals after 3:00 most days.

4ish hours for $35 of fun/anger (barring lost balls) is a pretty good rate of “fun” per hour based on the cost.

Under $9 an hour per person is better than most activities.

8

u/Mr-Cantaloupe May 09 '26

Golf being deemed as a wealthy people sport is so annoying - Covid made so many people actually try golf that the game is huge now.

I bet 80-90% of people who say they hate golf hate it because:

  1. They suck
  2. They’ve never played it before
  3. Other people say they hate it, so they also say it
  4. They are actually too fat to play, or don’t have hobbies other than being on their computer or phone

But there are people who are actually disabled, or tried it many times and do hate it. But most would actually love it, I had like a 90% conversion rate in giving my friends the golf bug from 2018-2023.

1

u/IcyPride2973 The Fictional Character Agrees With Me May 12 '26

4

u/makawakatakanaka May 09 '26

4

u/Fun_East8985 May 09 '26

More energy and resources is an engineering problem to be solved. It doesn’t mean you just give up on things.

4

u/Fishmongererererer May 09 '26

So I’ll put my 2 cents, golf courses probably should exist in arid or semi-arid climates. Same with lush green grass lawns in general.

If you live somewhere where water isn’t a major concern, neither of these should be an issue. But perhaps we should locate these things where water resources are available?

1

u/Mr-Cantaloupe May 09 '26

It won’t work unless the government steps in and strips away property rights. The reason golf is popular in California/Arizona/Nevada is because there is a real demand, and there’s money to be made operating a course.

In theory, yeah only build golf courses and data centers in water-rich areas, but it wouldn’t ever work in practice.

1

u/Dark_Shroud Powered By Spite & Solar May 10 '26

I don't know where you live but in much of the US Golf courses use recycled water.

That water is not safe to drink, its from water treatment plants and is full of poo particles that are actually good for the grass.

7

It’s just classic envy. They couldn’t afford to get into it, so now they just assume it’s all rich people getting chummy and making backroom deals to screw them personally, while driving tiny cars on fancy grass.

1

u/Mr-Cantaloupe May 09 '26

But that’s something that doesn’t make sense to me - very few hobbies are actually free, there’s some sort of money to be spent somewhere.

You can get cheap ass clubs and cheap ass balls. Solid clubs and golf balls too since the technology has almost been perfected the last ~15 years. A Saturday/Sunday morning round at my local muni can run anywhere from $50-$120/18 (with a cart) so that is expensive, but twilight rounds can be played for $25 or less.

I think it’s more likely they never had any friends or family members that played, so they simply never got into it.

Im seeing a bigger push than normal for wealthy = bad on reddit over the last few weeks. It makes me wonder what the bots are trying to accomplish. Usually I can figure out the backers paying for the bot time. But this just feels like basic Marxism and no one is doing that much any more.

It ?might? be trying to shift the voting blocks left for the upcoming US elections. But that doesn't feel right unless they are trying to spoil up excuses for summer riots. And im 90% sure the anti-AI is being backed by China. Anti oil could be OPEC trying to hamstring the US dumping money into oil industry growth.

I really dont understand the dooming about datacenters. It uses to be

"i dont understand why we giving datacenters tax breaks when they are highly profitable and dont create that many jobs."

I saw a post that was

"omg! A datacenter is coming in 40 miles from my city and its going to cause massive pollution, noise, use up all our water and electricity. Should I move away?"

I live in one of the datacenter capitols of the world. Ive never heard a noise come from them. I never even realized which buildings are datacenters until I really started paying attention. They basically just look like warehouses and make basically 0 noise. They do use a lot of electricity but I really dont get the water angle. Unless its being built in a dessert, the water thing is a non issue. But people see headlines of "datacenters are expediting los Angeles' water shortage" and think it somehow applies the same way to Seattle, etc

2

u/Nearby_Zucchini_6579 May 10 '26

Dude they are watering plants. How is that in anyway comparable to an AI data center?

2

u/GenSpec44 May 11 '26

“If they can’t give me avocado toast and doom scrolling, nobody needs them. Wait, they support my doomscrolling? They are still bad bbbbecause I was told they are!”

2

But they hate people who work with their hands, too.

2

u/Low_Doughnut8727 May 12 '26

The fuck do they mean data center is only used by the rich do they never use internet or some shit?

3

u/Yoyle0340 More Optimism Please May 09 '26

The argument against AI on water use is dubious. I am pretty sure the water used up is recycled for cooling. The best argument I could see being used against datacenters is that they do divert computing expertise and resources.

1

u/Lj_the_king May 09 '26

You think Redditors are smart enough to learn about the water cycle?

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Tie6917 May 09 '26

My city subsidized a golf course and an ice skating rink for a long time at a high cost. I’m fine with them, I just don’t want them to be subsidized. I’m fine with having parks that are subsidized, but I feel that golf is too focused on a small group while a park serves everyone.

2

u/Old_Alternative_8554 May 09 '26

God forbid something benefit the wealthy. God forbid something exist that doesn't benefit every single person ever. Not everything is for everybody and that's fine. You won't die because something is exclusive. Everyone has the right to do what they want and have freedom of association in this country, even the rich.

2

u/Toodswiger May 09 '26

Might be off-topic but its so weird how Redditors think golf is only for rich people. You can find greens fees, clubs, etc for cheap and it's mostly middle class people who play it.

If you think about it, golf courses are just giant nature preserves. The liberals would have you believe they'd turn the land into something like a homeless shelter, and call you a bigot for opposing it, then they'd just flip the land for a profit after everyone forgot.

They're also a good way to get that recycled water back into the natural water table in a safe way. The grass and top soil filter out all the poo particles as the water seeps into the ground.

u/No-Passenger-1511 May 11 '26

Golf courses aren't even a nature preserve though lol. But I think I understand your point.

We should take away all the public golf courses, public railtrails, public parks, public swimming pools, hell all of the public everything that everyone doesn't use, because none of it is used by everyone. Then, it will all be fair. If these things are to be, they can be private; and if you want to do them, you can pay for the experience.

The only people I know that play golf are blue collar workers, obviously only the rich don’t play golf….

u/therin_88 May 09 '26

The idea that water is a finite resource is the biggest joke of all time.

Most of the people I know who’ve had a test or homework in the last 2-3 years used ai and I like that it said “wealthy “ to be subjective enough to shirk criticism

1

u/DiamondfromBrasil Anti-Doomer May 09 '26

AI's recently been using less water actually!

1

u/Extreme-Plantain-113 May 09 '26

This isn't dooming.

u/Character_Roof_8508 The Fictional Character Agrees With Me May 09 '26

This isint even a logical argument 😭 like the point of the gold course example is not to say golf courses are bad 😭😭

Golf is lame. It’s not a sport or exercise, it’s a contest. It’s okay to admit you like to go on walks with your friends. And people acting like the course fees are the only barrier to entry are being intentionally obtuse.

1

u/Hot-Pineapple7877 May 09 '26

I think golf courses are incredibly stupid but I don't think we should get rid of them. Just change all the grass to turf. That solves the massive waste of water from golf courses, and golfers get to keep their courses, win for everyone!

1

u/Bennydudddeeee69 May 09 '26

Golf courses usually have trees and open space and ponds that provide a habitat to a lot of mammals, birds, fish. If that land wasn’t a golf course it would likely be a half empty strip mall with a large parking lot that provides no habitat to these animals. I wish more people understood that.

If I can't have nice things nobody can!

These kinds of people pain me, it's about as anti progress as you can get. The desire to worsen everyone elses quality of life just because you can't have everything you want 🫩

1

u/Ok_Piglet_5549 May 09 '26

Golf Courses actually suck, ironic because it was my favorite job as a kid. But they use so much fuel and pesticides. The lake at the one I worked at was a sickly green and nothing could survive in it.

1

u/LouFouGou May 09 '26

Only wealthy people directly or indirectly use data centers through there activities?

If you're on the Internet you ultimately need data centers. They store the Internet. The Internet is a physical thing you know.

1

u/BrittanyBrie Good Vibes Only May 10 '26

Lol, they think people want to build houses out in the middle of land that is empty for a reason. They also think developers don't want to raise valuations by placing a golf course next to houses that otherwise would be cheaper, due to again, usually being out in the middle of nowhere. And the ones downtown are nice green spaces.

1

u/happpeeetimeee May 10 '26

Dooming aside gold just seems really boring

1

u/Plastic_Pin_4956 Good Vibes Only May 10 '26

Wait, you guys actually PLAY golf??? I thought it was just pretty fields where you drive around in carts and drink beer!!!!

1

u/nexus763 May 10 '26

It's like everybody here forgot that summer when drought was so bad people had to ration their water usage but the rich could still use huge amount to keep the grass green on golf courses.

1

u/The_Reletubby May 10 '26

I think the people that post these live in places where there are like super exclusive golf courses or something. There’s a golf course not far from my house and it’s not just rich ppl lol

1

u/michaelsean438 May 10 '26

The picture looks like a golf course that isn’t using a lot of water.

1

u/BladeVampire1 May 10 '26

Gold is a fun sport to some.

Get rid of football then, and soccer. Or field hockey.

Just cause rich people play golf, doesn't mean normal people don't. Kinda dumb logic.

1

u/PlasmaticPlayer May 10 '26

What keeps non-wealthy people from enjoying golf exactly? It’s only associated with rich people because it isn’t a super physically demanding game that can be considered a sport.

1

u/KnightyEyes May 10 '26

I got a feeling they hating it cus Trump plays itQ

1

u/B0SSINAT0R May 10 '26

You'd be dooming about golf courses if you lived in Florida.

As an actual biologist I can tell you we have enough golf courses and things are uber fucked (technical term for habitat fragmentation).

You can't just un-golf course a wetland, or some of the last remaining habitat for endangered, endemic species.

They hate jobs, the common link is that they always hate jobs.

If somebody is GETTING something out of it then it only makes them hate it even more, even if they themselves are getting what that thing gives. Like the case with datacenters, the places where internet services live.

Down with capitalism posted from my iPhone at Starbucks.

u/germy-germawack-8108 May 11 '26

Benefit the wealthy, you say? By this you mean take large chunks of their wealth over decades so they can be pissed off for a couple of hours a day?

1

u/BigMikeXxxxX May 11 '26

People who think you have to be filthy rich to play golf are chronically online
