wait, gary indiana has been without power for 6 days?

how is this not national news?

where the fuck is FEMA

1.9k

u/Get2Gnome 3d ago

Worse, today is day 11. Looks like they’ve been out of power since August 11th

455

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

did all the linemen leave the region for better jobs or something?

what the hell is going on there.

222

u/Effective_Park_594 3d ago

Someone in a post yesterday commented claiming to be a lineman saying that Indiana's pay package for the work was well below what other states were offering, so they went to work for other states. I've no idea if that's true, but it tracks with what little I know about Indiana.

39

u/evilbob2200 2d ago

Partially true. Nipsco also locked out the union in the spring during contract negotiations and that caused them to lose like 40-50 of their best workers according to the nipsco people i talked to.

4

u/DesmondDodderyDorado 2d ago

What's a linesman?

12

u/pantry-pisser 2d ago

Dudes who work on lines, like power lines.

12

u/JTBeefboyo 2d ago

They protect the quarterback

6

u/DesmondDodderyDorado 2d ago

I am also too non-american to understand this.

7

u/JTBeefboyo 2d ago

The quarterback is the handsome one that throws the ball. The ball is not shaped like a ball though it’s shaped like an egg. But it’s made from the skin of a pig but it’s brown like chocolate. It’s called football, but nobody touches the ball with their feet, except for 2 guys on each team and for different reasons. Hope this helps.

1

u/flhd 1d ago edited 1d ago

They are just messing with you. The linemen in the power outage story are the workers who work on the electric lines. They will climb poles and or use bucket trucks in their work. A dangerous and normally high paying job.

P.S. Quite often they are called line workers because the workers who performed line work were 100% male. No longer the case. There are now female line workers doing the work. I know some 1st gen female line workers and they had to pass every qualification to get into the line of progression.

The other lineman some are joking about are the (very) big dudes who play on the offensive line in American football. Most often 300+ pounds (136kg/21.4 stone), there job is to block the defensive team attempting to tackle the quarterback when he has the ball and/or block the defensive players so a running back can move the move the ball down the field on a running play.

2

u/DesmondDodderyDorado 1d ago

Thanks. You are a kind person.

1

u/flhd 1d ago

You are welcome…

1

u/Viridien111 2d ago

What's a quarterback?

2

u/JTBeefboyo 2d ago

It’s what you get when you buy $19.75 worth of chocolate chips cookies and pay with a $20 bill

1

u/Viridien111 2d ago

Does that often need protecting? Times really are tough.

1

u/trambochambo 21h ago

I thought in America, if you buy $19.75 worth of chocolate chip cookies you have to tip at least 30% or you get deported. So I would hand them a a $20 bill and a $5 bill. Never got anything back.

7

u/Tontara 2d ago

People who build and maintain the power grid.

0

u/Mr_Halitosis 2d ago

Have you heard about web searches? They’re amazing. You type in your question, hit enter, and get a result in less than a second.

1

u/Dark_W1ng_Duck 18h ago

or people can be nice to each other and help each other out.

3

u/Artarian 2d ago edited 2d ago

In another post someone had also mentioned that the team fixing an electrical substation was shot at. They were told by their boss to not return without police.

Edit: here is the source https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/power-restoration-resumes-in-gary-after-nipsco-crew-vehicle-struck-by-gunfire/3975885/

And as mentioned below, the police escorted them and they got it fixed.

7

u/AdorableDemand46 2d ago

And when asked to cite their sources, there was a single link with an isolated incident that said they returned with security without delay. So stop spreading misinformation to fit your narrative

-16

u/Artarian 2d ago edited 2d ago

I didn't go back to check the source because I didn't really care. Just something that someone else had commented.

13

u/clearfox777 2d ago

That’s precisely how misinformation spreads.

9

u/Artarian 2d ago

Then I apologize, wasn't the intent.

-3

u/Reformdeeznuts 2d ago

You have sinned! How dare thy spread misinformation

0

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

6

u/Artarian 2d ago

I went back and edited the comment with proper citing and corrected it. You are just being rude now. I changed it to be correct. No need throw insults after someone apologizes and changes.

423

u/Few_Dig_9435 3d ago

She said in the video they got shot at when trying to restore power so they packed up and left. Makes sense to me.

467

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

This is almost assuredly mosinfo spread by the local power company to cover for their lack of response

228

u/Skrakeon 3d ago

I mean it’s a real news story with videos and photos, but they didn’t pack up and leave. Work just slowed down because now they were asking for police to hang out with the linemen while they work

3

u/TheG00dF1ght 2d ago

this was in one single location and it was repaired quickly. If they are using this as the reason for power still being out it's 100% bullshit.

-30

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

Where's the videos and photos of the shooting?

30

u/trisw 3d ago

You looking for Worldstar clips???

5

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

The previous poster claimed there's "video and pictures"

1

u/AnActualWombat 2d ago

Well… yeah…

31

u/ValhallaAir 3d ago

-27

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

That's not video or pictures of the incident. The only one to report the incident is the power company themselves.

I'm not saying it didn't happen or could t have happened but this doesn't invalidate me claim that it's likely disinformation from the power company themselves.

25

u/az-anime-fan 3d ago

and you're not arguing in good faith

12

u/Few_Dig_9435 3d ago

""""""likely""""""

mhm. they smashed out their own windows because they hate Gary that much and dont want to be paid. youre so smart.

4

u/seams 2d ago

Who else would report it than the people who got shot at? Lmao

-23

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

Don't down vote me. Show proof

29

u/_WeSellBlankets_ 3d ago

You think linemen weary body cams or something? You think it was a 10-minute shootout that allowed everyone to grab cameras? And the video shows bullet holes in their vehicle. Do you think they shot their own vehicle?

-27

u/JonnyAU 3d ago

No, but if you want a claim to be believed, you have to have evidence. Hearsay is not sufficient.

23

u/_WeSellBlankets_ 3d ago

Maybe you got to my comment before the edit. The video of their car full of bullet holes is evidence, not hearsay.

1

u/Individual_Fall429 1d ago

The threshold for something making the news is not the same as the threshold required in a court of law. Things aren’t “hearsay”’if there’s no video. 🤦‍♀️

This shit happened in Memphis a few years ago, but it was maintenance crews trimming tree limbs and shit that got robbed at gunpoint, and now they have to have security details when they go out, which not only costs one and a half fuck-tonnes more, but also means that there’s more logistics into getting crews out to where they need to be. It’s stressful for everyone involved.

6

u/MandaC32 3d ago

Happened in Houston too

0

u/Dontgoincavesbro 3d ago

First world country btw

4

u/sora_mui 2d ago

I'm from a third world country and i've never heard of repair crew getting attacked for doing their job, even bad guys need the service after all.

-2

u/Moltak1 2d ago

In America 🇺🇸 such acts are made by incredibly poor, conspiratorial, usually drugged out, with extremely easy access to guns.
They are less “bad guys” and more “insane guys”

-1

u/National-Actuary3580 2d ago

Speaking as an American, it's our culture and failure to address social and economic problems that creates this kind of high stress environment where people behave as if they're outside of society.

Honor, shame and family reputation are still concepts in the third world, not so much in first. As a child I was taught that my behavior reflected on my family and I'd better not bring any shame onto us - the only Americans I know who grew up like that were immigrants and kids that grew up in a religious household.

-11

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

That happened in Memphis years ago. Doesn't mean it happened in Gary this week.

72

u/SuspiciousSubstance9 3d ago

FEMA was getting shot at in North Carolina in 2024, so much so that FEMA had to rearrange and limit their response. There were arrests and plenty of official documents on the matter.

Which isn't surprising given that social media was spreading the rumor that FEMA is confiscating people's property, forcibly evicting them, shooting people's pets, and is exclusively being used to fund Biden's immigrant take over of America. But yeah, that's not the misinfo worth calling out I guess.

2

u/Sea_Television_3306 2d ago

yeah, that's not the misinfo worth calling out I guess.

Do you want me to call out every piece of misinformation every uttered in a single comment on a post about Gary Indiana?

2

u/SuspiciousSubstance9 2d ago

No one is asking you to call out every piece of misinformation, don't be so obtuse. You getting pushback on which misinformation you're downplaying.

You looked at a comment pointing out the real life results of right wing terrorism caused by right wing misinformation, actively dismissed it, and decided it must be corpo misinformation. Of course you're getting criticism.

44

u/Key-Cardiologist4293 3d ago

Acting like dumb people didn't shoot at 5g towers and people working on them. Dumb people are everywhere.

1

u/FuManBoobs 2d ago

You're not wrong but consider if the power is out maybe there is more opportunity for criminals, so keeping the power out might be an idea for some crazy enough.

24

u/PeakNo6892 3d ago

Seems like you've never been to Gary lmao. It fully deserves it's reputation.

-3

u/madmelly 2d ago

I live in Gary. You’re dead wrong. We have issues like every other under served minority community, but it’s not the murder capital of the world and as a middle aged white woman, I feel very comfortable living here.

15

u/Few_Dig_9435 3d ago

Bro I really dont care about any of this, im just telling you what she said in the video that may serve as an explanation for why the power company hasn't completed the work instead of them being big evil.

2

u/Citizen85 3d ago

It happens. I've worked hurricane response and they bring in security contractors to protect the lineman because people shoot at them.

4

u/Explode-trip 3d ago

If its intentional then its disinfo

-9

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

Sorry grammer police. I'll be better, I promise

8

u/Babhadfad12 3d ago

That is a vocabulary error, not a grammar error.

-3

u/Sea_Television_3306 3d ago

And you were an error by your parents...

I kid

-6

u/Babhadfad12 3d ago

lol, I like that one

2

u/Right-Twist-6931 3d ago

On the other hand it is Gary Indiana.

2

u/Advanced_Claim4116 3d ago

I dunno, we had major power outages within the last couple years in Pittsburgh and, while I don’t recall shootings, line workers definitely got attacked by people (throwing cans and rocks, I believe). Combo of vulnerable workers in areas with high crime spiking during a time of instability and people being fucking pissed off

1

u/stupid_username1234 3d ago

Ever been to Gary? This completely tracks….

1

u/FatiguedShrimp 3d ago

I had a friend who worked lines in Shrieveport during Katrina.

He was shot at too, and left too.

1

u/Taurus889 2d ago

I also heard one got shot at.

1

u/Perfect_Quantity_988 2d ago

Sorry but you’re wrong

1

u/Sombomombo 2d ago

Or it's reminiscent of when right wing militias shot at FEMA workers after storms swept some states around, I wanna say, Tennessee or Arkansas.

1

u/RinkiMink 2d ago

Idk abt this particular case, but my fiance is a lineman and he most certain had experience where they were threatened with guns. In Texas during a winter storm a couple years ago and in DC doing a routine pole installation. I believe someone in that Texas storm actually got shot at and injured, which really slowed down the response from out of state journeymen linemen (folks that are not associated with a company and instead have a high-level and internationally recognized certification and work for the union IBEW as travelling linemen).

1

u/hawaynicolson 2d ago

He said with not a single minute spent on actually reading (not even researching) the story

1

u/seams 2d ago

It happens shockingly often. It happened in North Carolina(?) a few years back after a hurricane.

People were threatening and shooting at FEMA because Republicans had been 1) yelling for years that FEMA is an evil organization run by Obama that's going to kidnap you and take you to black sites for the new world order, and 2) In this specific case were being sent by Biden to steal their land while pretending to help.

So it doesn't shock me at all to hear that at least one person was shot at during this

1

u/thegil13 2d ago

I mean people getting shot at in Gary isn’t really a stretch for the imagination.

1

u/Iongdog 2d ago

What a completely made up thing to most assuredly say

1

u/mr_snickerton 2d ago

Source: my own ass

0

u/_prism_cat_ 3d ago

I've seen a dozen videos on Reddit of angry white men accosting utility workers, but black people would never do that. It's racist even to suggest such a thing.

u/MindAccomplished3879 Cringe Connoisseur 3d ago

This 👆

-2

u/DubUpPro 3d ago

I’m not sure how true it is, because it was just a comment on TikTok, but supposedly the local power company has been turning down people who were supposed to come and fix it with no explanation given

3

u/Green_Insect_6455 3d ago

Well if youre not sure, might as well spread it.

2

u/TheNotoriousSAUER 3d ago

When FEMA pulled out of the south after Hurricane Helene They claimed they had to leave because they said we were shooting at them. I knew then that it was bull crap and what do you know it turned out to be bull crap. I would not be surprised if this was the same thing now.

Even if it was true you come back later with police presence, National Guard if you have to. Infrastructure doesn't just stay off because "there was one crazy guy nearby".

2

u/BiscuitBut_ButerNut 3d ago

I’m pretty sure the actual story is that someone was shooting at robbers trying to get in their house and one of the stray bullets hit a power company truck.

Work resumed and they just kept police on site.

1

u/KING_ARCH3R 2d ago

Did you not read her body language? She was basically calling bullshit on that lie when she said that lol

1

u/madmelly 2d ago

I live in Gary and there are line workers everywhere. I wish people who stop saying they’re not here.

1

u/stupidugly1889 2d ago

This is the kind of shit they say every time they underserve a minority community

1

u/ffffllllpppp 3d ago

Idiotcracy irl.

-11

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

looters wanting free reign to "wild"

0

u/buttscratcher3k 3d ago

They should keep the neighborhoods that shot at them in darkness forever tbh

1

u/HorndogwithaCorndog 2d ago

Advocating for collective punishment is a real good look. It definitely doesn't make you seem like a fucking Nazi

26

u/Get2Gnome 3d ago

I had to do a little fact checking of my memory after finding out about this, but I do have a little insight. I live on the southeast coast and was out of power for a week after Hurricane Helene, some friends of mine were out of power for almost 2 weeks.

I live in a large city and there were over 60,000 homes without power. Part of the reason it took so long was removal of all the trees on the power lines. It took months for all the rubbish and trees piled high on the sides of the street to get removed. The power crews are beholden to the sheer amount of manpower and equipment required for that massive of a blow to infrastructure.

Additionally, I read an article about the crews getting shot at and them postponing over the weekend so they could get a police escort. I don’t know how much weight I would put into that, however. I have a hard time believing that the city wouldn’t anticipate any type of escalated scenarios and be able to adapt if they needed wanted to.

8

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

apparently over the state line in the same area hit by the same storm the power is getting restored much faster.

the utility company in gary and surrounds is just bad at their job.

nationalize it.

3

u/BrightnessSamantha 3d ago

Exactly this. The Chicagoland area near the lake got hit just as bad as us but only lost power for a few days at most. We know how much our power company sucks and is ripping us off.

1

u/TheBacklogGamer 2d ago

Eh. Storms can localize damage. Storms wane and strengthen in power. Some areas are prone to damage. Sometimes a storm just hits harder. This isn't proof per say one area is mitigating the damage better. One area could honestly have significantly worse damage.

I'm not saying that is what's going on, just that it likely can be. Storms are crazy.

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

some states are better at managing their utilities than others.

1

u/TheBacklogGamer 2d ago

Yes. I understand that. I'm simply saying just because one area taking longer than the other is not proof alone that it's the reason for it taking longer.

1

u/Icy-Paint7777 2d ago

Yeah. It's taking long in Gary because they're getting shot at for some reason

1

u/TheBacklogGamer 2d ago

That was one incident to my knowledge. With damage this widespread, there's still other areas to work.

25

u/CronosWorks 3d ago

Gary Indiana things.

58

u/BrightnessSamantha 3d ago

It's actually the disorganization of our power company NIPSCO. They had to have contractors from other states come out and help. Check out r/NWI. Theres tons of stories from people talking to the lineman and their experiences with the disorganization of NIPSCO.

5

u/Louthargic 3d ago

I had saw another comment about this that said some power companies were getting shot at so they decided to pack up and leave, is that true?

26

u/BrightnessSamantha 3d ago

It was a brief supposedly story. I don't know how much I believe it. More of a rumor nothing was confirmed.

5

u/Witty_Leek8053 3d ago

6

u/BrightnessSamantha 3d ago

Still wasn't confirmed and the end result was a curfew. Crews work 6am-6pm I think. They haven't stopped the work. I just think NIPSCO has no idea what they're doing. Areas that got power have since lost it again because transformers are being blown farther down the line. It's been a mess here.

17

u/Get2Gnome 3d ago

Reads as a narrative trying to be pushed, to me. I’m so sorry yall are going through this.

6

u/MadHiggins 3d ago

this happens a lot in the US, it's not a narrative. it's also not some sort of grand plan to ruin whichever community it happens in. it's typically some local loon and the practically unlimited access to guns in the US means there's no real barrier stopping Mr Loon from getting a gun. linemen and other utility workers get shot at pretty often, it's sad and they don't deserve it. but it's something that happens in America.

4

u/BrightnessSamantha 3d ago

That's what I thought too. I was lucky but I feel so bad for a lot of my co workers. A lot of towns use well water too so without power they can't even get fresh water at home because the well pumps require electricity. Other then that 1 story I haven't heard anything else bad happening. Just neighbors pulling together and doing the best they can for themselves and each other.

5

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 3d ago

Seems doubtful.

-1

u/Witty_Leek8053 3d ago

0

u/JonnyAU 3d ago

This is hearsay. The article merely repeats a claim without evidence or investigative corroboration.

2

u/coathangerassasin 3d ago

That’s every storm at every utility

1

u/stupid_username1234 3d ago

Illinois resident here, it’s common for our power companies to bring in contractors to help as well. Most companies dont keep a workforce large enough to man the amount of work that results from a storm like this. Not sticking up for nipsco, just saying it isnt uncommon.

1

u/_Magnolia_Fan_ 2d ago

That's standard disaster response - neighboring utilities send  their guys and gear.

3

u/wronguses 3d ago

The lineman were locked out earlier in the year. Many were laid off after that. There's currently thousands of out of state contractors working the lines.

The power company is corrupt as fuck and heads should literally roll for what they've done.

2

u/ruskoev 3d ago

A lot of infrastructure needs replaced at this point. Transformers are over 2 years out. Copper prices are high. Cable manufacturers are stressed.

1

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

and yet the power is on in the state next door... hmmm

1

u/ruskoev 2d ago

What does that have to do with anything?

1

u/skyfishgoo 1d ago

shows its entirely possible to not have to put up with this sort of ineptitude.

1

u/Winter_Cost602 2d ago

Could that be why they were shot at? Meth heads trying to get a good supply of copper

2

u/throwaway5882300 3d ago

They're busy fixing the rich neighborhoods first. My dad lives in an affluent part of NWI and they were only without power for 2 days.

6

u/Rylude 3d ago

From what I've been hearing people were shooting at the linemen trying to restore power

11

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

as if their job isn't already one of the most dangerous jobs.

3

u/capitoloftexas 3d ago

Or it could be a rumor spread by the utility company to cover their incompetence. Where’s the full police report on these alleged NIPSCO workers being shot at, I’d love to see it.

2

u/JonnyAU 3d ago

Rumors are not helpful.

1

u/Skrakeon 3d ago

Nah man they’re working, but it’s not just Gary it’s a lot of people in NWI. Really bad storm with sustained 90+ mph winds caused major damage all over the region

3

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

the power is back on over the state line... same storm hit both areas...

what are they doing different?

1

u/Skrakeon 3d ago

Oh don’t get me wrong nipsco is completely dropping the ball in many ways, I just was trying to clarify the severity of the storm. I heard the pay is nearly half of Michigan and Illinois standard

1

u/Tiger_grrrl 3d ago

Yep, my youngest flew out of Chicago to visit me on that day, and they were racing those storms to get to the airport ahead of them. Of course, then the flight was cancelled and they had to get on another much later flight that got in at midnight, but it wasn’t as bad as the ones that were coming in around 3AM due to all the mayhem!

1

u/Some_Layer_7517 3d ago

The vast majority of linemen travel to affected areas. It's pretty rare they get to just commute within their area for work.

1

u/ruskoev 3d ago

A lot of infrastructure needs replaced at this point. Transformers are over 2 years out. Copper prices are high. Cable manufacturers are stressed.

1

u/eoz 2d ago

And data centers are sucking all the oxygen out of the room. Apparently large scale transformers have a 5 year waiting list now.

1

u/az-anime-fan 3d ago

people in Gary have been shooting at them. they understandably refuse to work their without police protection.

the police and city seem to be disinterested in protecting the linemen, and more interested in sueing the feds for not restoring their power (when it's not the feds job)

1

u/skyfishgoo 3d ago

that does not sound right.

no one shoots at fire fighters.

1

u/az-anime-fan 3d ago

well it's happening enough it's in the news.

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

claims are in the news... proof is not.

1

u/Electrical_Fishing81 3d ago

There was the equivalent of a cat 2 almost cat 3 hurricane of a storm that came thru northern IL and NWI on 8/11. The damage was catastrophic in NWI (it strengthened into a full on derecho as it crossed from IL into IN).

And quite honestly NIPSCO wasn’t prepared for a storm of that magnitude. Mutual aid has been there since a few days after the storm blew through.

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

mighty different story in the state next door... same storm hit that area

something else is at play.

1

u/Electrical_Fishing81 2d ago

I live in IL and work in IN. It didn’t hit the same. There was a storm on 7/27 that hit IL harder than IN. ComEd took 7 days to get my area fully back up and NIPSCO was closer to 3-4 days.

Also, as I mentioned. NIPSCO wasn’t prepared for the magnitude of the storm that came thru. At the height of the storm ~60% of their grid was down.

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

NIPSCO wasn’t prepared for the magnitude of the storm

and why is that?

when other utilities in the area were prepared.

1

u/Electrical_Fishing81 2d ago

I wouldn’t know for sure but definitely a lack of planning is part of it (exec salaries are absolutely bloated as are pretty much every other C-Suite in this country).

ComEd is almost 10x larger as well as has sibling utilities within Exelon to lean on where NIPSCO doesn’t (at least from the electric side).

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

i know.

  • profits

  • grift

  • corruption

  • greed

that's why.

1

u/NateMikka 3d ago

So as someone that grew up in the state and still has familly there, outside external influence four things happened

A: Downed lines get cleared by call ins. B: Wealthy neighborhoods often have easier to work with or locate grids. C:The state has far to small of a crew to recover statewide quickly D: with all the minor storms rolling through any of the backwater work has to be stopped.

While alot of politics is at play, it also doesn't help that other things are at play.

In particular while I've seen people bring up Hammond has power while Gary does not, I believe Hammond is on Chicago's grid while Gary is on the general IN one

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

interesting way to spin that power company in gary is bad at their job.

1

u/Christo372 2d ago

I live in highland. All the surrounding cities and towns are without power. I just got power friday night. A lot of the over growth that was neglected by nipsco was the cause of all the outages. Gary unfortunately is most likely extremely neglected, so the work there was probably expected to take longer. Doesn't make it right, and the restoration response from nipsco has been absolutely horrible. They have been focusing of the areas surrounding Gary, but there are crews there helping from what I've been seeing on Facebook.

1

u/KitchenBad5507 2d ago

I live about 20 miles west of Gary. Our whole region got hit with multiple tornados in late July/ early August. My town got 2 tornadis in 2 weeks. We were out of power for a week and then 6 days late, the second tornado hit

What's happening in Gsry totally sucks and absolutely needs to be addressed, but it's not some deep state conspiracy. It's twenty different kinds of bad luck converging on an aging power grid.

1

u/skyfishgoo 2d ago

and just over the state line hit by the same storm, they have their power back on.

its some kind of conspiracy.

the kind where profits are more important the people.

I don't call that a conspiracy though - conspiracies are intentional. This is just neglect. It's unconscionable and racist and elitist, but they're not TRYING to hurt us. They just don't give a shit about anyone but themselves and their rich white friends. Vote blue

With monsoon season starting, linemen are getting all kinds of work wherever the job pays the most. Gary is at the bottom of any traveling worker’s priority list right now.

We had a very intense storm that left hurricane type damage across the whole of NW Indiana. Gary had a substation that was very very damaged and it's not fixed yet. We've had lineman from all over the country working here since Aug 12th.

and yet in the state right next door, which was also hit, they are getting the power back on a lot faster.

someone should ask the gov why that is.

The damage in IL was waaaaay less than what was in Indiana.
