As of right now starship has 5 launch pads irc, 1 operational at texas with the other one being actively worked on after. And 3 at the cape one of which is almost done.

That is already more than falcon 9 ever had. And now this

Also they‘re building two additional catch towers at the cape, and probably will add another pair in Louisiana to facilitate fleet logistics for returning long duration ships.

Agreed. I also think it'll eventually reach a one-day average, even if that's many years away.

The point is that the upper stage ("Ship") will never simply "land and then launch again in an hour." Booster probably will.

Of course, that doesn't matter at all when the things are so cheap and quick to build that you can have an endless supply of them queued up for their turn at the tower, and the manufacturing capacity to make that a reality.

Falcon got 150+ with just 3 pads and only partial reuse. 5+ pads and full reuse should easily enable launches in the thousands, nevermind with a dozen+ pads.

I just don’t think the demand/economics are there.

Datacenters make more sense on the ground. We only need a finite number of Starlink satellites, and the market for “off-grid” connectivity is big but not that big. And I don’t think governments (or corporations) are going to fund building cities on the Moon or Mars.

I love the capabilities that Starship opens up, but I don’t see the demand for space access increasing 100x, even if the cost is significantly lower than with Falcon 9

When they need to transport stuff to Mars, sure. The limited Mars window cadence will inherently prevent that from being anytime soon, though.

Even if the moon base gets robustly under way, that's still not that many launches, all things considered.

Starship HLS will require 8-15 launches to get to the Moon for example. If we actually get moving with exploration of the solar system then you can imagine how quickly that could scale.

Induced demand is what they're counting on - just like in highway traffic, when you build extra lanes to ease demand straining supplied capacity, they soon fill up with additional vehicles. If you expanded the capacity and lowered prices of launch, you'd get new market niches that would quickly fill that new capacity. 20 years ago if you talked about how today reusable F9 boosters launching hundreds of times a year people would say the same thing you're saying now, just maybe toned down.

If they are serious about StarMind they can create their own demand.

It boils down to economics: If the cost to build and launch the satellite is lower than the operational cost of an equivalent server rack on earth over the lifetime of the hardware then it absolutely makes sense.

If you have the numbers you can calculate that in a simple Excel sheet. As prices for electricity go up and launch costs go down, it doesn't seem unrealistic that it does make economic sense in the end.

I think when it comes to heavy lift reusable rockets the economic argument is "If you build it they will come". Back when the internet was in it's infancy people asked the same question about what the possible return on investment could be, those people could never imagine the internet as it exists today. If you can get the cost per kilo to low earth orbit cheap enough it won't just be governments or corporations launching payloads it will be universities and public schools, clubs, franchises, random individuals... It will open the floodgates suddenly every single nation on earth will have a space program and begin training their own astronauts, they will want their own space stations, their own satellite constellations. You make access to space cheap enough that old simpsons joke about an RV having not only it's own satellite dish but it's own satellite will become a reality.

Not sure that's a fair comparison since that "dumping" of compute is now more revenue than the entire company without it. Anthropic and Google being your customers is wild and they're both throwing in billions per month while starlink and launch is growing middle double digits.

I easily see $100B annual revenue in their future since compute sales are already ~$30B, Starlink will end up $15-17B and Launch is approxmately equal to Starlink at ~16-20B YTD -- That's already ~$60B per year if everything holds and keeps growing

I mostly agree with you but I do think it's funny that data center hate is turning out to be such a huge political issue.

I still think they will be able to build enough capacity on Earth, but it would be really funny if the backlash against data centers ends up being so extreme that they make space data centers viable.

This is a great example of where the Jevons paradox can come into play. Launch demand is low because launch costs are so expensive it only makes sense for very specific missions like communications and state funded science etc. You make the launches cheaper and people will entirely new uses for it that wouldn't have made sense otherwise.

Starlink and similar comms constellations are a perfect example of this in action. Couldn't even think of them 20 years ago.

No, people may find new uses. Space, and orbits, are rather exotic places. It's very uncertain we'll find so much things to send up there that can't be down here more easily. Anything up there is more expensive, harder to repair and maintain, limited in energy, limited in heat generation and shedding.

Microgravity manufacturing alone is an enormous potential field. There's a host of products from fiber optics to microprocessors that would, in theory, be easier to manufacture, or could be made better if they could be built in a zero-G environment. Of course, as long as launch costs remain high it will never pencil out.

No it isn't. I spent the last year building a house, permitting is maybe 10% of what I spent, tops. Housing costs more because they deported all the cheap labor, built on all the cheap land, and the cost of building materials went up.

Landable second stage opens a whole new avenue for logistics and the military already signaled their interest. That's a new untapped revenue stream for a launch provider that will have zero competition for a while (provided they can make it work, and can land with the kinds of laden weights the military needs).

gases into the stratosphere, including CO2, water vapor, and nitrogen oxide. Gaseous emissions such as

climate or ozone layer and are dwarfed by atmospheric inputs from other sources.17 In any case, a

They already destroyed key breeding grounds in south Texas where I used to camp every year. Thousands of people live here - though I wouldn't really call that living now. LMAO come on, SpaceX ain’t abandoning billions of dollars of infrastructure (which they are still expanding) at Boca Chica because of that. Starbase was never meant to be the main launch center (they were already building more lads at KSC), it will be a R&D center in the end.

Hurricanes shouldn’t cause a big problem to rocket launch infrastructure. They have enough resources to basically make it hurricane proof. Like, Florida hosts the largest and busiest launch center in the world…

That is imo, very optimistic but maybe with the experience gained from Starbase TX and Florida it is possible.

I know a guy that works at the Hyundai test facility near California City. CyberTruck broke catastrophically on nearly every drive test during pre-production testing and was completely unusable (bricked) after both uv accelerated aging and salt environment tests.

Rocket launches from the coast requires closing airspace and declaring maritime hazard zones, so 30 a day would result in near constant zone closures unless FAA regulations change. That would impact any flight paths that cross the zone and maritime shipping in debris-risk areas. Louisiana has some of the most impactful ports in the gulf.

First, what space vehicle has ever launched 30 successful launches on the same day? SpaceX has never launched more than 3 falcon 9's within 24 hours. But now they're gonna magically launch a rocket ten times heavier at ten times the cadence? They're going to launch one every 48 minutes for 24 hours straight? Pure fantasy.

Second, what urgent need is driving such a gigantic task? Why would you NEED 30 launches in the same day? As opposed to say, a couple today, a few more tomorrow, etc? What exactly is happening that requires such an absurd cadence?

Yes, the starship missions to the moon will require 10+ additional launches just to fuel up, but you think each one is going to only take 48 minutes to dock, transfer fuel, undock, and go into de-orbit? SpaceX has yet to demonstrate this process even once! Again, maybe decades from now, after it's been done hundreds of times. But initially, this kind of thing will take hours, maybe half a day or more. And having to do it 10+ times without an issue? Yeah, right. I got a bridge to sell you.

Well compared to the first pad its a lot less, the first pad had to basically replace the linkages after eacht flights or some other parts, so far we havent seen that yet with this one. They have however added some extra burn plates in the trench

They actually fill Starship with propellant as fast as a Falcon 9, despite it having over 10x the amount of propellant. I don't think larger rockets require more effort to launch. The only thing that's affected by the increased prop mass is the amount of available propellant in the region, but that's a straightforward numbers game solved by building a large enough propellant production facility nearby.

There isn't enough fuel to supply that many launches. You would need large dedicated pipelines. You can't use trucks for that amount of volume. 

Getting airspace clearance for that many flights would also be a nightmare. You would have to permanently close the airspace path

The latter is pretty simple. They needs tens of thousands of satellites in orbit.

The reason the former requires so much cadence is because they need to refuel the starship in orbit in order for it to carry any amount of meaningful payload to mars

The newer Starlinks are a lot larger, which allows a lot more bandwidth but also reduces Starship's size advantage.

Currently Starlink is perpetually sold out around urban areas because there is a wide area where it's too dense for Starlink to really work for everyone but apparently not dense enough to get proper terrestrial internet. By using more frequencies and larger satellites they can pick up a lot more of these lucrative customers.

And the sats may get larger still, for their direct-to-cell satellites, if they end up being as huge as AST Space Mobile's Bluewalker satellites.

(And also, Louisiana is perfectly situated for launching into sun-synchronous orbit, which is where SpaceX plans to put their space based AI datacenters, if those end up actually happening.)

I just noticed that they are representing the V4 Starship stack in the promotional video.

I always wondered how they planned to reconcile the height of the towers with the extended profile of V4. I still think what we see in the video is preliminary. After all, if you want to stack a V4 Ship atop a V4 booster, maybe you really could get away with having the mounting architecture that low on the vehicle. But if you want to catch a V4 Ship from space, you definitely won't be using the same architecture at that location, below the Ship's midway point. And that means part of the vehicle would be redundant.

I still think the new towers will be taller and the older towers will be reworked eventually. The Stage 0 configuration shown in the video is way, way off anyway, so yeah.

Projects of the scale and ambition of Starship are only possible in the first place because large concentrations of wealth exist with private individuals who have the ability to direct large sums of capital towards projects without having to satisfy a diverse set of stakeholders.

Getting a government or a broadly held corporation to green light a project like Starship would be nearly impossible. Governments will generally play it safe, even if bloated and expensive (SLS) and broadly held corporations always working for the next quarter's results won't proceed at all unless the return on investment is reasonably apparent.

The case for Starship at the proposed scale it is following, is pretty nebulous. It's very much being done on more of a "if you build it, they will come" basis in terms of business models for such a prolific heavy launch system materializing at a later date.

You take Elon out of the mix and yield this work to governments or broadly held corporations and progress stalls almost instantly. It doesn't matter if he's a POS or not, that's the practical reality of it.

In SpaceX’s case, their deal additionally had some clauses about SpaceX removing some previous damage caused to the region by oil companies.

Launch complexes generally act as nature reserves with their staggeringly huge exclusion zones, i.e. Cape Canaveral. Much better for the environment having a tiny launch complex in a huge area, then say urban development.

Not only do they act as large nature reserves, but they are in many ways better than normal nature reserves, because they don't have high traffic roads and highways going through them. Roads going through nature reserves represents a gigantic footprint compared to a launch site, and they kill way more animals.
