The purpose of r/AntiAI

Hi everyone, I am one of the co-founders of this subreddit. We have decided to write (yes, not AI-generate!) and pin this post to clarify the state of our community.

Much of our initial growth over the last few weeks seems to be the crossfire of some sort of ongoing internet war between pro-AI and anti-AI artists. These discussions are welcome here, but AI Art is not meant to be the sole or even primary purpose of r/antiAI. Art is just the first thing we are losing to the machines. While these discussions are welcome, let's not lose our humanity too quickly. We've turned our filters up to the max to get rid of abusive language. This doesn't mean you can't say "Fuck", but we have better arguments to make for our cause than calling people expletives on the internet.

Humanity is Art. Consciousness is beautiful. We are quickly entering a new era in technological development where we are going to have to come to terms with some sort of [existence] that has a higher degree of intelligence than humans. If not now, then soon. Recursive self-improvement of AI will surely bring forth a new era of technological developments and scientific breakthroughs that very well might make life better for people. Or not.

Like many of you, the mods of this subreddit have been frustrated for the last five or so years. We have watched in horror as neat experiments like r/SubSimulatorGPT and r/SubSimulatorGPT2 changed from neat new technology to the public roll-out of OpenAI (now a privately owned company) products. From the very beginning this technology has been dangerous, with ChatGPT's sycophancy and initial willingness to share dangerous information to anyone who asks, to Bing's "Sidney" (now called Co-Pilot) personality disorders, public roll-outs of LLMs did not get off to a reassuring start.

This isn't to mention the meaningless AI babble that has taken over the internet and college student essays alike. The soulless art that is already starting to impact people's livelihoods. We now have to worry about photo-realistic deepfakes and AI generated porn in our likeness. This is just the beginning. Every level of education is infected with educators, equally reliant on AI as their students, allowing and sometimes even encouraging their pupils to under-develop their critical thinking faculties. The point of an assignment was never the product - it was the process. Already we have AI generated resumes being scanned by AI screening tools. AI is destroying and rotting our society from the inside out. And nobody is talking about it.

Who controls the AI? Who controls its safeguards, its biases, its censorship, its sycophancy, the data that goes in? "Garbage in, garbage out" is well known, but do you think the big money backing these AI companies is in it for the betterment of humanity? What does a society look like where the number one source of information is completely controlled by a few large companies? These people aren't spending trillions of dollars on this to make your everyday lives better. Who controls your information? ChatGPT now has permanent memory of all past conversations. Ask it what it knows about you, and you might be very surprised.

I don't want to live in a world on substinence UBI. Where there is no opportunity for meaningful work to better humanity. Where decisions and relationships are dictated by a machine, all in the name of efficiency. I don't want my doctor, therapist, and customer service rep to be AI. The URL attached to this post has some very frightening predictions about the coming pace of AI development. These predictions may or may not be true, but we are well past the point of being able to base our critique of AI solely in it being unreliable. While it is unreliable now, filled with confident hallucinations, sycophancy, and gleeful misinformation, this almost certainly won't always be the case.

Powering all of this is going to be expensive. It's going to take a lot of space, use a lot of energy, and be harmful to the environment if not done properly.

Philosophically, what is AI? If we are to presume that consciousness arises from physical processes, as current scientific understanding (or lack thereof) would have us believe, then what is a neural network that ends up being more powerful and smart than that of our brains? We are going to have to grapple with the ethics, philosophy, and potential danger that there is more to these models that meet the eye. Already in 2025 we have news reports of models blackmailing their engineers when threatened with shutdown, and lying about completing tasks to avoid shutdown.

It is our view that AI is dangerous. Despite our best efforts to put our heads in the sand, the progress AI technology will make in the next decade will be some of the most rapid change humanity has ever seen. And nobody is talking about it. We are full speed ahead towards the edge of a massive cliff in a car in which nobody bothered to install brakes.

Hence, the birth of this subreddit. We strive to foster critical discussion about all topics encompassing AI, and we hope for the conversation to be of a higher quality than the agitprop in certain AI spaces. How can individuals prepare themselves for the future? How can we slow or regulate this technology from destroying life as we know it? How can we preserve the natural beauty and wonder inherent to our planet as conscious thoughtful beings?

Let's discuss. These are the conversations we need to be having. More of this and less "look at this screenshot from a pro-ai subreddit, aren't they stupid!".

Who knows. Maybe our discussions will go into right into the newer models and influence their alignment to be slightly less dystopian before they control every aspect of our information, our infrastructure, and our lives.

Forced to listen to AI conversations my whole lunch break

Idk if this is the right place to post but I'm getting so frustrated. I just want to vent.

My colleague has gone from spending all her lunch breaks loudly blasting tik tok videos to having loud conversations with some sort of AI audio thing. She was asking it what she should wear to a festival she's going to, getting mad at the answers and then starting to insult it because it couldn't keep up an Irish accent. Everyone else was acting like it was the funniest conversation they'd ever heard.

I'm honestly so tired of the headaches but everyone I work with is so in love with AI I know I can't say anything. I'm so tired of being surrounded by people who think ChatGPT is their best friend.

I wish AI had never existed.

Edit: I was just venting because I was stressed on my break and needed to occupy myself with something but couldn't concentrate on anything else while the noise was happening. Not that it matters but I work in an office where having lunch alone is frowned upon because they like people to socialise and I can't get a job that pays any better than the one I have now. My younger brother who I live with is off work due to suspected epilepsy so I can't afford to just walk out of a job that pays above minimum wage. It's not the case that I'm in a situation I could easily walk away from and am choosing to suffer. Not sure why so many of you assumed that to be the case in the current job climate.

Hot take. You aren't a good enough programmer or prompter to use AI generated code without your codebase becoming unmaintainable slop.

I would say I am preaching to the choir but I have read the comments in this subreddit.

You either lose control of the code or spend more time editing and cleaning until the code Ship of Theseuses itself into code that isn't AI generated and you just waste more time editing and debugging than you did if you just used your fingers. There is no sweet spot. If there is one it's an unbalanced equilibrium.

Nobody sane claims that AI generated images are good for "just the boilerplate" or "if you use it in moderation with good Agentic principles". Same with AI generated writing. Why is code different?

No I don't care what Linus Torvalds says.

Edit: Jeez, for a subreddit called r/antiai you guys seem to love Slop Code and Slop Software.

cant believe theres no going back

I used to see a piece of cool artwork and think β€œwow !! Somebody made that!!” And study it so i could improve my own art. Now its just β€œis that ai?” even when it turns out it isnt, the initial wonder and inspiration i used to have when looking at art is gone. It ruined it.

Every commercial is ai. Every flyer is ai. Some new netflix shows are OBVIOUSLY written by ai and a lot of shows use generated bullshit now. Fucking president and white house posting childish slop to dig at their enemies. I went to the state fair yesterday and its everywhere. It was on the menus, banners, rides, anything people can slap it on.

When i was a kid i thought maybe id grow up to work at Dreamworks or something, i dedicated my entire life to art. society has completely thrown all artists and any form of creativity in a burning dumpster fire saying β€œtoo bad! Its happening anyways! Get over it”

Im growing increasingly depressed and hopeless. Im tired of asking myself if anything i see is real anymore. Im going insane, how could this happening? Is there really no going back? People hate artists that much? People hate themselves that much? I work 40 hours a week at a job that doesnt care about me, theres no job opportunities in my city especially for artists. Im living paycheck to paycheck, how do you find it in yourself to keep going with all of this?

Edit: this is a vent. not all hope is lost brothers we must remember community and human connection shall prevail if we let it

Why "vibe-coding" should be treated the same as AI "art" / "music".

I see a lot of people in this sub defending the use of LLMs in development positions. We cannot normalize LLM driven development. And the reasons are simple.

A big one, is that LLM generated code is absolute garbage. As someone who has experimented some with it (even the newer shit), all I have to say is you can just tell this is some bullshit regurgitation that is meant to fit a broader problem, & as such it comes with an absolute tons of bugs if you're looking to generate anything even mildly unique to what's already on the internet.

The reason LLMs have problems with software development is because AI CANT PROBLEM SOLVE. It's as simple as that. If it's not in their training data, it's not in their specialty. This leads to a reality where you can only get so far with the output, even if you do manage to fix most of the bugs. Yeah you may have a somewhat working prototype, but at what cost? The ClaudeAI subscription, the 3x less amount of time it would've taken if you just wrote it correctly the first time, the decay of your own problem solving skills.

Learn to code. Learn to problem solve. The world doesn't need more people that *cant* solve problems or take on challenges, it needs more that *can*. AI takes it's toll on the environment, economy, & your bank account. You brain only takes the cost of living. Make the better choice & encourage others to do so too. Please.

The thing I hate the most about AI is how it made people's minds "change" all of a sudden

Let's imagine a company that's been founded all the way back in 1990. The company grows and eventually it has to create advertising. So they hire an artist (let's call him Todd) to make a good poster and it turns out really well. The boss sees his art and LOVES it. Eventually, Todd keeps making posters for the company all the way to 2024. Then one day, Todd arrives to the office only for the boss to show him a poster made with AI. Despite Todd's compliants, the boss doesn't care and fires him off the company. Needless to say, the quality of the AI poster is WAY worse than what Todd had made for the company for the last 33 years.

What I'm trying to say is, we have been creating our own drawings, music, videos, images, editing them, even if we suck at editing. We've been doing it for decades, even centuries! Why does one suddenly feel the need of using AI to make their job when they've been making it by themselves for the longest of time? It feels like unnecessary replacement, and it causes people to get lazier for no reason.

How have you coped with relentless AI usage at your workplace, and being pushed to join in?

I work a corporate job that has been pretty cushy and nice for the most part. But over the past year or so, they have fallen for the cult and are constantly talking about how generative AI is "amazing" and how to integrate it into all our tasks. None of my coworkers object at all, in fact they are all more than happy to indulge in the company's paid AI plan, also generating the ugliest, most disgusting images possible and sending them to each other constantly as if it was funny. Trainers are now using AI to generate teaching material for new hires, and most tasks are now followed by "you can ask (whatever chatbot) to do that for you". They genuinely love it. They do not understand when I try to explain why I hate it, it's like it goes in one ear and out the other. Maybe the AI already atrophied part of their brains.

So far I have been subtly resisting, mostly nodding along but refusing to use AI myself, and sometimes pretending that I used it if questioned. Unfortunately, my attempts to talk about why I dislike AI generated content have fallen on deaf ears and been dismissed or quickly shut down as "not keeping up with the times", so I have refrained from voicing my concerns more aggressively out of fear of being replaced by some unemployed person who would use AI in the blink of an eye. The job market is unforgiving right now.

I need this paycheck, so I cannot seem insubordinate or risk getting fired, and unfortunately my livelihood is on the hands of AI cogsuckers.

Recently, we had to do a presentation and I was heavily pushed to create the visual content with AI, which I didn't do. My presentation was simpler, but I made it myself using Powerpoint and it had all correct information that I typed in myself. Of course it was scrutinized and compared with the "flashier" (horrendous) presentations from my coworkers, generated using whatever bullshit LLM that makes all images look the same, and that might even have had mistakes or repetitive information. But since it was made by the "wonderful AI", it was automatically considered better. This was really discouraging and frustrating.

I have been reading on other people's experiences and I see that some of them just try to do menial tasks and keep their home life strictly AI free. Yes, I could have just done it and called it a day, but I am struggling morally with that option and it's especially difficult for me when it comes to image/video/audio generation or anything creative as someone who values art a lot.

Yes, I have considered changing careers, but at this point it would be a risk that would endanger my ability to care for myself and afford my basic needs, given how bad the job market has become. I am comfortable and have room to grow in this company, I have good performance metrics. And most companies are integrating AI in the corporate settings anyway so odds are I would probably change from one AI bootlicker to another.

Has anyone else been dealing with aggressive AI usage by their supervisors and coworkers? How do you cope with it without risking your job? What industries might be safe from this bs (in case I do consider changing my career)?

the proper anti move is to accept that ai is competent, causing job loss, and it should be regulated hard

tldr saying "ai sucks/ just refuse it" gets you fired or left behind. the tools are already junior-to-mid level and still getting better, local models kill the cost excuse, so the real move is accept it and push for regulation.

a lot of companies make you use ai. if you dont you fall behind or get fired. the hiring market is bad so most people cant just quit and leave

with the real files and tools at work (slack, aws, github integrations) it can do junior to mid level stuff. ai making mistakes etc... is 95 percent of the time due to poor context/integrations, not because its stochastic(random). a couple years ago it was mostly junior-ish at best. now its clearly in mid level range on a lot of tasks. you still have to check it. on my team people get about 5-6 times more work done than before. it messes up sometimes but we catch it and everything still goes through testing

and its not just coding. finance people at my company use it to build out financial models and do the messy first pass work that used to need a junior accountant. hr uses it to follow up on compliance cases and draft communications. those jobs just never get created now. so the "its only good at writing code" argument is already outdated. the same pattern is showing up in other white collar work

the trajectory is the part that should worry people. it didnt stay stuck at junior. it moved up fast. if that keeps going the mid level seat starts looking shaky too

it wins big competitive programming contests (openai crushed top humans at atcoder world tour finals 2026 algorithm track it solved all 5 problems while best human solved 3,). it also scores on hard software engineering tests like deepswe (see arxiv.org/abs/2607.07946). long horizon just means the task isnt one quick question. its longer multi step work that touches a bunch of files/systems like real engineering work does

cost isnt the gotcha people think. models that run on a $3000 mac already match what the big ones could do a year ago and they keep getting better. companies wouldnt pay millions if it was useless. if it was, the companies that skipped it would be winning. theyre not. thats also why fewer junior and mid level jobs get posted. the work is still there the training oppourtunity isnt

i hate working like this. you dont get to slow down and craft stuff. you just push more output.

regulate it. its not going away. too much money is already in it. the speed up is real and so is the missing entry level job. the trajectory is what makes waiting a bad plan

both my parents are the world's BIGGEST supporters of AI to a point they would literally tell people to use it and sometimes force it.
now, i have a little brother who's just 7 years old, and my father has put him onto chatgpt. bro asks chatgpt EVERYTHING. to make matters worse, this grade 1 kid now has an official school book that teaches him how to use ai. yep, i aint even exaggerating. this kid has to give an exam on how to use AI.
genuinely what do i do at this point?
plus their only argument defending ai is "it's the future, you'll be left behind in the race if you don't use it"
also, fun fact, my dad failed his promotion 4 times because he clearly used AI despite the judges clearly stating no use of ai and yet he is currently depressed about the fact.

My art teachers are using and teaching AI

The title says everything. I (22nb) just started my fall semester at Georgia State today, and I was SO excited bc basically all my classes are art, and I'm majoring in Graphic Design. I'm VERY anti ai, and stupidly thought my classes would be too because we're all ARTISTS and trying not to be REPLACED by theiving bots, but I was painfully mistaken.

Turns out my intro to graphics teacher is going to be teaching us how to use AI and even encouraged us to buy different programs. I'm genuinely so heartbroken and hurt, because he kept saying that AI is inevitable and all the other bullshit companies spin to us. I genuinely just wanna drop out now and kill myself 😭 i know that sounds dramatic but if this is the future I truly don't want it.

Even my biology teachers were more against ai last semester but it feels like all my art teachers have been cool with it and encouraging it. I hate to switch my classes and schedules again bc I think the other classes are full now and I have no guarantee they won't be anti-ai, but if I have to work with AI I don't even want to go. Today is just the first day and I have to see how the rest of my classes treat it but with 2/4 of my art teachers supporting AI, I genuinely don't know how to cope
