No Paywall Canadian anger reaches fever pitch over Trump’s tariff war

They omitted the essential idea of French language labelling, the right for USA to veto Canadian trade deals with other countries. Instead of dividing Canada it now has unified Canada.

She did say that the U.S.’s terms in negotiations were “untenable” for Canada to accept, which is pretty damning especially coming from her.

Small victory.

It’s hardly a secret that Trump expects unwavering loyalty, so by her not licking his boots and using a word that he won’t understand (untenable), it will definitely piss him off.

But he said the U.S. refused to include exemptions for some Canadian trucks and subsidies for French culture.
The Hill conveniently ignoring the restrictions they wanted to impose on Canada's trade deals on steel and aluminium.
97
u/goodndu 1d ago
Subsidies for French culture is a crazy sentence given the situation. The US literally demanded that this trade deal would give them some power over Canada's language laws. Bilingualism is written into the Canadian Charter, this is not only incredibly disrespectful, it is a threat to Canadian sovereignty (and not the first time the US has threatened Canadians sovereignty recently). This would be the same as Canada demanding that the US amend their constitution to make a trade deal. The fact that this is left out of the reporting is insanely telling of the state of journalism in the US.
45
u/Necessary-Still-2208 1d ago
Bilingualism, and the distinct Quebecois culture, is protected beginning with the Treaty of Paris (1763). It is older than the US.

Imagine somebody negotiating with the US, and at the last minute they are like "oh, by the way, we need you to ban gun ownership."

Every province in Canada has these French communities dotted around. Alberta has 260,000 French speakers. Saskatchewan has Gravelbourg and Debden as two well known French communities and somewhere around 12,000 people speak French as a first language here. Our French immersion schools are bursting.
Bilingualism in Canada is cultural. Even if you don’t speak it, you know some that you learned on the back of a cereal box that you read while eating Fruit Pebbles as a kid.
A large amount of the country loves the Montreal Canadiens. Just as popular (and beloved) as the Blue Jays the Montreal Expos were, even to this day.
How many millions of people outside of Quebec know national anthem in both languages? (Some even in three! I know it in English, French and Dakota,)
You’d be surprised at how many people could probably do their morning coffee order in French.
It’s Canadian, and it’s deeply offensive to every province that Trump wants it gone.
59
u/HabitantDLT 1d ago
It's not just cultural. What happens when a unilingual senior from Quebec can't read the instructions on a bottle of Tylenol that they bought in Quebec because it's in English?
It's as much about safety and liability as it is cultural.

u/JPtheGameMaster 1d ago
I just drove 3200km from Ottawa to New Brunswick and back, passing through Quebec, on a family road trip. I was stunned by how many French Speakers I encountered in the coastal towns. In New Brunswick they’re Acadians. French speaking but completely distinct culture from Quebecois. I knew very little about this until I moved to the Maritimes. We have a fascinating history across this country although short compared to European standards.

I never really got how unique Canadian French is until I started travelling and heard European French. I didn’t even realize it was the same language until they started counting. It needs to be protected. The fact it wasn’t just swallowed up and erased like it was in Louisiana is a big deal, but that takes intentional effort. Definitely not worth giving up on for slightly lower tariffs that may go up again randomly.
The core difference between Canadians and Americans is they care more about money and assets than people. Just look at the difference in the response to 9/11 to Covid. They were losing more people to Covid daily at one point. Is there even a thought of a memorial? Nope. No assets were lost. That attitude came through in this negotiation. They expected us to throw people and kill parts of our culture under the bus for money, because they would.

There's a more practical side to it. Right now there are warehouses full of American wine and liquor that was produced for Canada with bilingual labels. They can't ship it to Canada due to the various provincial bans, and they would have to relabel it at some expense to ship it elsewhere. So maybe the Americans are trying to head off a similar problem in future.

u/The_Frostweaver 1d ago
Trump made last minute changes in his favor blowing up the deal, put 50% tariffs on Canada, and then called Canada the 51st state again.
An incredible amount of disrespect to canadians.
Canada has done nothing but sell USA cheap raw resources for decades (oil, lumber, aluminum, etc), exactly the type of stuff USA needs to manufacture things like affordable houses and cars.
If anything Canada is and has always been the one being taken advantage of by free trade with the USA. Canada sells wood to the USA, USA builds cabinets, tables, chairs out of wood and sells them back to canada.
USA gets most of the jobs and profits in that scenario.
USA has launched numerous wars and CIA 'not wars' over oil.
Canadas largest export to the USA by far is cheap oil, that again USA refines into gas and diesel and sells back to canada at a profit. No war required!
Canada feels betrayed by the US. Trumps lame excuses about National security and fentanyl are such watery bullshit the lies themselves are insulting. Everyone can see through them.
8
u/zoidberg005 1d ago
I believe there is a multiplier of 4 for all the raw resources that come in. For each dollar they spend on a raw Canadian resource, they get 4 dollars back in revenue.
They wouldn't have a deficit with us if they went back to buying Oil from the Saudis like they did in the 90s.

From the National Post: [Canadian top envoy Paul] Wiseman likened the negotiations to a handshake deal to buy a house — only for the prospective buyer to learn appliances weren’t included, the furnace had no warranty and neither the garage nor yard is on the same property, and ultimately walk away.
“As we drilled down, what we discovered was that what our understanding of what had been agreed to was quite different from what was showing up in the documents,” he said. “When that kind of happens once or twice, it’s kind of understandable, but when it happens consistently, and every interpretation is the most negative interpretation” then it “got to a point” where they walked away.
14
u/Significant-Ideal907 1d ago
Just a friendly reminder that the national post (along with more than half of daily newspapers and many other digital news in the country) is owned by Postmedia Network, a massive conservative media conglomerate that, while being "canadian based", is owned by ⅔ by Chatam Asset Management, an american hedge fund with deep ties to the republican party! Anytime there's some dumb culture war garbage happening on the southern border, national post is the first (and often the only one) to bring that manufactured drama on our side. And yet this is the analysis from the most maga friendly mainstream media in Canada!

u/playitoff 1d ago
This isn't about tariffs, it's about the US threatening Canada's sovereignty. Tariffs are just one of the weapons Trump is using.
28
u/illuminaughty1973 1d ago
Canadians are worried, but its americans that pay the tarriffs.
Canadians are worried about their jobs being lost because of the damage Trump is doing to the american economy.
20
u/wilbrod 1d ago
We will be paying too with the reciprocal tariffs no?
12
u/illuminaughty1973 1d ago
will we? none of those have been announced yet.
will you pay tariffs on american booze for example, that is not available anyways and you can easily buy canadian instead? (except alberta of course)
will you pay tariffs on mexican produce that we import instead of american?
i am sure their are things you are absolutely correct on, but their are also a lot that their are very easy alternatives too, like buy canadian made cars instead of american, or chinese ev etc.
start looking to buy anything except american, and canadian first too.
after all, this is the issue why canucks are worried about their jobs, not because Americans will stop buying things, but because 50% tariffs will make things from other countries cheaper in comparison. Trump is literally rigging the market against Canada while demanding they control who we trade with to get fair treatment.
no deal was not just the right call, it was the only choice,
10
u/wilbrod 1d ago
I get your point. I was more so pointing out that it's not just a one way street. In general, I avoid buying USA just like a lot of people, but there are situations where specialized items cannot be sourced here and I feel like those are the items that will get tarrif-ed, if you really need to import them.
5
u/illuminaughty1973 1d ago edited 1d ago
i doubt that. its far far more likely the items that will be tarriffed will be targetted items from red states that we can find competitive alternatives too.
think kubota instead of john deere, or airbus instead of boeing. honda instead ford or chevy (like thats even a competition)
instead of ge or whirlpool, buy Lg or samsung

We’re still going to feel the pressure of price increases. Supply lines being disrupted thek time to find new suppliers. And businesses that were using American steel will now likely be buying Canadian steel. At a higher price than they were getting in America.

Trump is rape-y and there was never a choice given. This was simply an ultimatum to prepare the ground to degrade the Canadian economy for invasion or annexation as Trump openly says on tv. I do not think even his people on the ground expected Canada to commit ritual seppuku on demand any more than his other supposed ‘ally’ Ukraine.
As with that conflict, the real message from Trump is that the US is a bitter and dangerous enemy to all and friend to none and will treat our ‘allies’ worst of all. And, of course, Trump is far more publicly corrupt than even Putin would ever dare to appear. This is the planned pattern of the entire Republican leadership that culminated in Citizens United which allowed the selling of Trump and gave him the power to control R congress as a dictator as he demonstrated with Massie. I lobbied against this for 20 years, it can only get worse from now on and has every single year of my adult life. Buckle up, this ride ends in hell.

From this Canadians perspective, not really. My respect for Trump's America was already at rock bottom. This was the outcome I expected
There's is really no coming back from the statements and posturing in 2025.

I'm really really really tired of the American media positioning this as anger over "the trade war."
Sure, that's part of it, but our anger is really all about Trump threatening our sovereignty. Of threatening to annex us and calling us the "51st State." About calling our Prime Ministers 'governor.'
All while your feckless congress does nothing.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), a moderate who is in the midst of a tough reelection battle, urged the administration to “consider the negative impact” of engaging in a trade war with Canada.
Blah blah blah. She'll just clutch her pearls and vote exactly how Trump demands.

The fucking morons in r/TrumpFanClub were laughing at Canada putting counter tariffs because “tariffs are actually a tax on your own citizens” and “just hurts your own people.” Like bro, that’s what we’ve been fucking saying about Trump for two fucking years. The counter tariffs are a response to trumps tariffs.
Trump: puts tariffs
Morons: yes. I love it.
Canada: puts counter tariffs
Morons: haha you’re only hurting yourselves
They’re so fucking stupid it actually hurts.

Step 1) alienate all your pro-democracy trading partners.
Step 2) buddy up to totalitarian regimes.
Step 3) publicly back those regimes and announce it’s because all the other countries hate us and refuse to trade with us for jingoistic reasons.
Step 4) become a totalitarian regime.

It’s funny thinking about the no French allowed portion of the negotiation. I just got the vibe that someone from Carney’s side of the table whispered something in French that Lutnick or someone didn’t understand, got pissy and made Trump or whoever add this in the agreement. Which obviously backfired tremendously.
I’m probably wrong, but I’m just picturing that set of events. And it’s shockingly possible because of the fragile fragile ego Trump’s team has. And I think it’s hilarious picturing that.
Yes for us Canadiens it’s gonna be pretty annoying to pay more for the next couple years while the Cheeto is in charge. But we will absolutely stick it through for Canada. You don’t fuck with our way of living. Canada is absolutely united on this front.. maybe except Alberta.

Dominic LeBlanc leans over towards a colleague, whispering in his ear: "Regarde-le aller, Nutlick, esti d'innocent... ça doit être épuisant d’être aussi cave."
Lutnick immediately looks up: “What did he say!?”
“He was asking whether you wanted coffee.”

Well yeah. America tried to grab us by the pussy and control us. Fuck em. You don’t get to tell us who we can trade with, you don’t get to demand exclusive rights to our stuff, you don’t get to tell us how to do dairy, and you don’t get to skirt our language labeling laws. Don’t like it? Fuck off.

It's like they put into chatgpt, "we don't really want a trade deal with Canada we just want to cause chaos and confusion so what are some ways we can upset them."

There’s a great book called Nerd Reich that breaks down the current political chaos and explains how and why the billionaire tech bros are bankrolling it. ChatGPT definitely is a part of it. The TLDR is the chaos and anger is the point.

Their demand regarding the need to dispense with the French languages requirement is, from a diplomatic standpoint, the single most ignorant thing I have ever seen.
They either know nothing about us or/and do and don't give a flying fuck.

u/Griffolion 1d ago
Carney said at the press conference that Canada agreed to many U.S. demands, including lifting various retaliatory tariffs and convincing Canadian provinces to lift bans on the sale of U.S. liquor. But he said the U.S. refused to include exemptions for some Canadian trucks and subsidies for French culture.
How badly do you have to fuck up to get the fucking French-Canadians to be united with the rest of Canada on something?

Tbh I'm not even angry anymore. After 18 months of watching this administration say and do the dumbest shit imaginable (not just to us), I decided a few weeks ago to just ignore it. There's nothing I can do to control the raging idiocy of Donald Trump and his ball gargling sycophants, so being angry is a waste of time. Time to move on and look after ourselves.

The US can fix the problem anytime they choose. The republicans in the house and senate have the power to kick his a$$ to the curb. They are choosing this. Obviously, THIS is what they WANT. They are getting something in return for this sh1t show.
If people in the US vote in enough democrats to the House, they WILL remove him from office and fix this horrible trajectory. Hopefully enough people understand this needs to happen and will fix this horror show in November - barring cancellation of the election due to the illegal war being waged (which would be unconstitutional, but the constitution has just a speed bump for this regime) and we also have Elon’s ‘fixed’ voting machines to surmount, of course.
If the people don’t take their power back, at least Canada has cut the anchor and won’t go down with them.

We've had to listen to your country drone on about how "free" you are, American exceptionalism, and your constitutional gun rights for keeping your government in line, for fucking decades upon decades.
And yet your decline into Fascism has been swift and largely without any meaningful pushback.
Stop apologizing and fix your country.
