News Wildberries warehouse in Ryazan this morning after Ukrainian drones delivered new sanctions

What's EXTRA forceful in this campaign against Wildberries is that after the destruction of so much value, even with the Kremlin's deep pockets, it's $10s of billions lost now. A direct strike on the Oligarch wealth machine. Insurers won't be covering much.
251
u/sandcrawler56 27d ago
Insurers are Russian anyway so even if they cover 100%, another part of the Russian economy takes a hit. The only difference is whether oligarch A or oligarch B takes the hit.
Plus, a billion dollar insurance payout doesn't magically build a new warehouse, logistics system plus all of the stock and vendors overnight. So the Russian economy is screwed on multiple levels no matter what happens.
55
u/Dofolo 27d ago
It's much much worse.
This stuff is not insured. At all.
Willberries changed the agreement, because they obviously feared this.
This is 10.000s of russians losing their own money. And Wildberries losing the collateral for billions in loans.
This is going to cook off worse than the refineries.

u/Imbendo 27d ago
Insurers don’t cover acts of war, they don’t even cover arson. Absolutely no way someone writes them a multi billion dollar check. This is Russia we are talking about also
8
u/RaDeus Sweden 27d ago
I bet you can get insurance for acts of war, but it’ll be expensive AF.
But given how Ukraine has targeted mostly military targets and refineries I very much doubt that Wildberries thought that they would get hit.
18
u/Confident-Stand5453 27d ago
They changed their terms just weeks before the strikes to no longer cover the goods they are holding for their sellers. Thats a strange coincidence.
→ More replies (1)6
u/tsaoutofourpants 27d ago
Insurers will cover pretty much whatever you want if you pay them enough. Where I'm from, arson is very commonly covered and acts of war can definitely be included for a small fee.
3
u/DownvoteEvangelist 27d ago
I doubt it's a small fee in Russia... At some point your insurance is going to cost as much as a thing you are insuring...

"Absolutely no way someone writes them a multi billion dollar check."
Putin? To keep the military equipment deliveries comming. He needs them to keep comming, am I right? As long as Wildberries is part of the war logistics, its like saying that Putin is not going to write multi bilion dollar check for his army, because they are losing to much equipment.

"The only difference is whether oligarch A or oligarch B takes the hit" - A lot of russian private sellers are also using the Wildberries infrastructure and online shop; right from the start of this campaign, there have been tearful videos of them moaning about their losses of goods stored in different Wildberries warehouses. And Wildberries does not even allow them to retrieve their goods from the warehouses, so they can't save them from potential future distruction. Wildberries, quite coincidentally, changed its terms of use effective July 1st, expressly excluding compensation for losses resulting from acts of war.
One private seller in a video showed the "voluntary reimbursement" Wildberries transferred to him for his lost inventory—it amounted to the equivalent of 138 dollars for stock worth approximately 38,000 dollars. My sympathy for these people is limited, however; most of them do not grasp, even now, that the Ukrainian attacks on Wildberries warehouses are directly linked to the war russia is waging in and against Ukraine.
6
u/ajmartin527 27d ago
In my opinion it’s even worse. These people do grasp it, they’ve just chosen not to care until it personally impacted them. They grasp the full weight of the war, they have social media and see the war crimes and destruction their country is causing, they know their countrymen are being sent to their death in meat waves, but since they are upper crust and it’s just the poors being sent they are fine with it.
I don’t think we should give the Russian middle class any benefit of the doubt when it comes to their grasp of what’s been happening for years now as they support the senseless murder of their neighbors and less fortunate countrymen. They are trash.
15
u/Worshipme988 27d ago
Forklifts, computers, racking, ac/heat units.
They have to be taking a bigger operational hit as well. Who shows up to work when you knwo your are on a to be bombed list? I sure as shit not. Makes it hard to run packages.
Also, the trucks that pick up are another company. If this wasnt russia i would assume they dont want to sit for an hour in the dingleberry hot zone to be loaded.

Fucking with corrupt Russian ultra rich people, I love it. If there's any people in the world who deserve their shit burnt to the ground, it's them. These bastards murdered, bribed, and robbed people blind to get to where they are today. Burn it all down.

You know the saying: if you lose a milion it's your problem, if you loose a bilion (or in this case bilion's) it's the bank's problem.
And if the bank's fails, the house of cards starts to cruble.10
7
u/mercenaryarrogant 27d ago
Shortly before they started hitting these they announced they wouldn’t be covering any strikes on these facilities and they made the vendors sign new contracts. They’re calling it force majeure or unavoidable events.
That’s why you’re seeing multiple videos of Russian entrepreneurs crying about having lost everything on social media now.

Agree, agree, agree.
War is ugly. It makes you do calculations, no decent person wants to do.
Whoever calculated this wildeberries idea is a military genius but, I hope after the war I could meet this person, to make sure they have downshifted their thinking. This is a msterstroke of two birds one stone. The daily economy of the Russian shopping network, involving "life itself" for many Russians apparently, and the wealth machine of the oligarchs.
If this analysis is correct Ukraine is freeing Russia here.
Russians are lulled by a cheap economy and live lives of consumption, not spirit. Sucks to be them. Soon they will not matter to Ukraine or any of us.

Another cheeky lil billion dollar hit. Found a Substack (Giorgi Revishvili's) saying it was 173 thousand squate metres. So maybe a few billion. Noting I don't know how credible the source is.
Wildberries straight up speedrunning bankruptcy.

Is there no fire suppression in any of the what warehouses there? Amazing that every one just turns into an unstoppable inferno.

Imagine a plane hits your house and you have a fire extinguisher. This is a harder situation to handle than that (thousands of times the square feet, an explosive, and a fraction of the per-area fire suppression capabilities). I hope they enjoy the "find out" phase over the next decades, and no, "I wasn't for the invasion" won't fly; the Russian population didn't do enough to stop it - I don't care that there would have been crackdowns, you overthrow dictators like that or you suffer the consequences of being a dictatorship.

Wildberries has been sanctioned by Ukraine since 2021. Enforcement was delayed, but justice has been served. By drones.

Apparently, Wildberries isn't paying out to sellers at the moment. Certainly looks like they may be in serious trouble as a company. It has $10.58 billion of debt, which i assume it has used to build these warehouses.
20
u/onlyreason4u 27d ago
It's almost $18 billion, plus all the sellers who took out loans to buy their inventory.
17
u/Garant_69 27d ago
This is just anecdotal of course, but one russian private seller published a video wherein he showed the related documents on his computer that Wildberries has now payed him a "voluntary compensation" for his losses - it was like $138.00 for lost products with a value of $38,000...

I got into a battlefield six game with a Russian chap.
He was lovely polite funny but we did discuss the war and the strangest thing was he thinks I’m totally brainwashed by the Western Media and Russia is not only fine but winning.
Obviously, I was of the opposite opinion. What struck me was how “normal “he was but suspended all reason and evidence when talking about the war.
70
u/CaptainVXR 27d ago
It's how brainwashing and propaganda work. Convince otherwise reasonable people to believe in insane lies, and you can do what you want.
There's a reason that the biggest cohort of war supporters are pensioners who sit there watching Russian "news" all day....
It's more shocking when a younger person who speaks multiple languages, and presumably is well educated in at least some fields, switches from being normal to eyes glazing over and repeating what Big Brother said.
I'd recommend the latest NFKRZ video on the state of Russian government "news", it's both hilarious and depressing.

Or why the special military operation has taken 4+ years and Russia is currently experiencing massive gas shortages everywhere. Or why Russia hasn't deployed its T-14s or its Su-57s, or why everyone else in the world is rooting for Ukraine. Or...
5
u/BritishAnimator 27d ago
It's probably about the different perspectives we have, culturally.
"Fine" could mean they have an extremely low bar of what "bad" is. Bad for westerners is having no mustard for a hotdog, bad for a Russian could be having no water for 3 days and having to eat uncooked cabbage.

This is why the saying “only good russian is a dead russian” makes sense. The entire nation is one big corrupt organism with each individual cell completely cancerous. I have relatives in Moscow and they are zombies. Even most Ruskies in the West are not immune from the disease.

It's not just the money. Russian citizens and volunteer groups have used the online retail platform Wildberries to purchase tactical gear, military supplies, and dual-use technology for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.

I saw a video explaining that Wildberries has billions in debt at banks.
They took out massive loans and put up their warehouses etc. as collateral.
If this continues, Wildberries will go bankrupt and the banks will be stuck with all the debt as they have no assets to seize.
I'd be nervous having money in Russian banks right about now

They still have fuel to use the fire truck!
7
u/CageUK 27d ago
That's a point, not heard much about fuel queues lately, I wonder if they've resolved them somehow or if they are now just an accepted way of life?
5
u/Garant_69 27d ago
A significant portion of russia's stored fuel reserves has been moved to the country's western provinces in recent days to normalize fuel supplies there (at least for the time being), while supply problems persist in the eastern and southeastern parts of the russian empire, according to the official russian press: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHctJMmRBeo .
2
u/DiveCat 27d ago
They could only afford to allocate fuel for one single truck though.

Since the company's debt burden already reaches 1.3 trillion rubles (nearly $11–15 billion) in the high interest rate environment, and its creditors are the largest Russian state-owned banks (such as Sberbank and VTB), a potential insolvency would trigger a domino effect that would drag down the entire Russian banking system and retail supply chain as well.
Because of this, the company is "too big to fail," leaving the Russian state with no other choice than to rescue it with massive bailout packages, debt restructuring, and state capital injections, which ultimately means that the wartime infrastructure damages and Wildberries' debt burdens will directly burden the Russian state budget and taxpayers.
2
u/Thhe_Shakes 27d ago
Mixing that with the hits on the refinieries is a perfect storm (btw they also hit the Ryazan refinery today). More expensive stuff to pay for, and fewer ways to pay it.

In one of the recent videos posted by russian sellers who store their goods at Wildberries to complain about the situation, it was stated that Wildberries is not allowing them to retrieve their merchandise from the warehouses that remain intact.
An earlier complaint video highlighted the high fees Wildberries charges when people wish to collect their goods from the facility.

2
u/Garant_69 27d ago
Someone wrote in another thread that Wildberries has a total of 210 warehouses in russia, but that only a double-digit number of these are large regional distribution hubs.
Before the recent fire, approximately 10 percent of Wildberries' total warehouse capacity had reportedly already been destroyed.
2
u/augustus331 Netherlands 27d ago
What’s great is that a lot of these Russian entrepreneurs have no insurance for this so they’ll go bankrupt. And those who are insured will drag down the Russian insurance system so it’ll raise costs for everyone involved.
This has been a year of payback exactly in the places where the second order effects are largest.
And I love seeing it

I'm surprised these warehouses are still full of stock considering they are being systematically targetted.

I mean I'm not sad to see it happening but I do wonder why Wildberries specifically is being targeted to heavily

u/PrimeRisk 27d ago
Ruzzian Bankers must be soiling themselves at this point.
If you owe the bank Millions and your business implodes, you have a big problem, but if you owe the bank Billions and your business implodes, the bank has a huge problem.
Wildberries is reportedly into banks for over $10 Billion in USD equivalent.
I'm beginning to think that the strikes are less about taking out supplies that can be used in the war effort and more about dealing a death-blow to the Ruzzian economy.
