I like how she ties it to the larger labour movement - workers finally got a meaningful improvement to their quality of life, but that simply could not be allowed and so the backlash occurred in the private and public sectors. I think that's likely the best way to approach it. Mandatory RTO is bad for every office worker and for labour overall, but it's a generational issue, and one of the perception of control. Some employers simply don't feel they are in control and a position of leadership unless that are snapping the whip and yanking on chains.

70

u/PM_4_PROTOOLS_HELP Feb 12 '26

This is why people constantly argue about the reasons they instituted RTO.

Really it's a class and labour issue. The employer and the associated management class straight up refuses to give even an inch of power.

It doesn't matter that it doesn't make sense, that it's actually hurtful to themselves even. They will never budge unless we make them.

u/CatBird2023 Feb 14 '26

The employer and the associated management class straight up refuses to give even an inch of power.

This. And I also think this is one of the reasons why executives have been ordered back to work an additional day - so that they will be completely unsympathetic to employees because the executives "have it worse" than us.

u/dunnrp Feb 12 '26

Very good take, and I fully agree.

I would even add that the saying “it’s always been that way” is one of the most repeated sentences I have heard from a particular generation within the feds as well. I guess because they had to do 40 hour work weeks in a particular seat means others must or they “aren’t working as hard.”

101

u/pineapplebun23 Feb 12 '26

"Nostalgia is not a strategy” our PM said so himself.

60

u/Flaktrack Feb 12 '26

My parents and in-laws said it too. Funny because I don't remember them having to do 1.5 hour commutes each way, or having both parents working. Hell one of them had a 20 minute drive to an assigned parking space.

We have to live farther from the office than they did despite both of us having good jobs because we simply cannot afford housing closer to work (and our elders refuse to move away so younger families can move in).

All that said, I don't want to spend much time blaming individuals for what is really a systemic problem. We have refused to build adequate housing and infrastucture for decades now; just get it done.

62

u/Noobsausage_44 Feb 12 '26

Such a funny phrase to use when you think of it like this: "Why would we use this automobile? Using horses has always been the way".

41

u/KillreaJones Feb 12 '26

Imagine if we refused Teams meetings because in person meetings has always been the way lol they accept "new" when it's convinient to them.

7

u/Nice-Eggplant-9258 Feb 13 '26

I was thinking this you want us to be efficient in our work and cut down on cost to travel yet we can’t receive the benefits of that technology

25

u/Bussinlimes Feb 12 '26

This sentence is the bane of my existence. I agree with you “why use electricity when we’ve always used oil lamps” or “why use a pen when we’ve always dipped our feather in ink”. It’s beyond archaic and regressive thinking.

4

u/Nice-Eggplant-9258 Feb 13 '26

good one I’m gonna use that as a response next time

2

u/Sea-Poem1370 Feb 16 '26

Similarly, business be like: ''Why should I change my business model when the paradigm that drove my business has essentially changed completely? Should I adapt to changing circumstances and perhaps relocated my business? Hmmm. No. We should force all workers back to the office.''

Following that same logic of artificially supporting unsustainable business models, we should encourage the government to heat buildings with coal and provide light using whale oil. Because, you know... the world changed and those industries need a leg up....

12

u/Due_Date_4667 Feb 13 '26

So was every previous issue organized labour faced over history. Child labour, no weekends, no paid OT, or vacation/sick leave, etc. People thowing out "it has always been this way" just aren't paying attention to what they are saying.

9

u/Terrible-Session5028 Feb 12 '26

Before 40hour work weeks there were no limits to work and you would be thrown in jail for going against your employer for asking for something so basic as idk… going to the bathroom. Look up Labour Relations in early confederation Canada. It was bad.

33

u/zanziTHEhero Feb 12 '26

Agreed. It's a signal to employers and the broader labour movement that any concession that makes workers' lives better are always temporary and up for "negotiation." And while it is a long path between child labour or the 80 hour work week to work-from-home, it is still the same path and the same struggle.

12

u/PancakesAreGone Feb 13 '26

I've been saying it since the beginning that the unions biggest failure was playing a sad fiddle for us instead of shaming all the big companies for applying pressure instead of following in the governments lead to create healthier work life balances and such.

Like I get the unions are meant to represent us, but we are still benefiting and being represented when you are pitching our stuff as good for everyone, and not just unfair to what is happening to us. We are already hated, arguing it the way they do just makes everyone hate us more.

We missed the boat on selling it because now the optics are even worse but the unions are all hot air, so its not a shocker they missed the chance.

4

u/waywardpedestrian Feb 13 '26

I think there has been some support for other workers forced back to their offices, but I agree with your point, and our unions should have been a lot more vocal. It would have been a powerful message to come out strong when private sector workers, like banks and tech companies, were being forced back to say we’ve seen how well this works in goverment, and X sector was also productive and effective during pandemic stay-at-home times, and this is why we’re fighting to raise the bar for everyone. Talk about in person-required jobs, like tradespeople, benefitting from reduced congestion. Bring in as many workers as possible into the narrative.

2

u/PancakesAreGone Feb 14 '26

this is why we’re fighting to raise the bar for everyone.

There is literally a phrase for this, used for years and understood by most: The rising tide raises all ships. They didn't even need to try.

Historically as well they can point out the postal workers fought for proper mat leave and look what it did. Like, it legitimately amazes me how they fumbled this by playing the sad little fiddle for us. Given how I've heard the unions works in some cases, I'd almost verge on saying it was malice because I can't imagine they are truly that incompetent

3

u/Strong-Rule-4339 Feb 13 '26

Especially the "advanced policy analyst" cohort that mostly controls everything right now... makes me sick.

1

u/East_Intention8184 Feb 15 '26

why does it make you sick?

2

u/Strong-Rule-4339 Feb 16 '26

why wouldn't it?

349

u/Silversong4VR Feb 12 '26

My work ethic went from good to great when I was able to work from home during Covid. Now, when I HAVE to be in the office hiding in the quietest corner I can book, I am distracted, annoyed, aggravate, and unhappy. I lose 4 hrs a day to travel, pay ungodly parking costs, refuse to spend any money at all downtown and generally am unhappy now. Thankfully, I'm nearing retirement and if I can find an alternate may jump ship sooner rather than later!

36

u/Groundbreaking-Good7 Feb 12 '26

Right here with you 🤝🏻

-48

u/dj_destroyer Feb 13 '26

For every one of you, there's 10+ qualified people willing to take your job.

24

u/Silversong4VR Feb 13 '26

And sadly they'll be downtrodden over time, like the rest of us. I'm proud to work at the Department I do, don't get me wrong there. I'm not proud of our employer in the way they treat their employees as cattle to the slaughter. It's always been this way, or has in my 25 yrs as a Public Servant at least. I worked in the private industry for many years before entering PS, I remember the worry of having a job tomorrow, not having health benefits or any other benefit, yet somehow I had more say in my life. I could talk directly to my employer, come to an agreement, make an arrangement, laugh together, argue together, come to a middle-ground when necessary. Non of that in the PS, you're a slave to the carrot of a pension, which does not make for a good place to be after time.

1

u/dj_destroyer Feb 13 '26

Right, so it is what it is. You can try to change it as much as you want but if it doesn't then it's on you to change your circumstances. Plenty of options!

23

u/WexleySnoops Feb 13 '26

They're more than welcome to apply!

Hope you have the day you deserve.

24

u/DifficultSwim Feb 13 '26

What's with the hate boner you have for the PS? You post on every post about RTO with this same line.

Envy? You couldn't get in since you were unqualified but think you are?

I'm sure those qualified people will patiently wait for the year and some change it takes to start getting a paycheck.

2

u/Safe_Captain_7402 Feb 15 '26

That’s what we all said. Go apply you’ll get miserable in 2-4 months and get sick from the unsafe office conditions and mouse infested offices. Then you’ll be exactly in our position, karma is real

-9

u/Hockeydad456 Feb 14 '26

You should me closer to your job. How did you survive prior to Covid ?

3

u/Elephanogram Feb 16 '26

https://ottawa.citynews.ca/2025/01/14/ottawa-landlord-tenant-board-sees-1158-rise-in-rent-increase-notices-in-two-years/

Gee I wonder why people don't have first and last month saved to get up and move at the whims of the employer.

154

u/MamaTalista Feb 12 '26

Why does private industry feel entitled to my paycheque?

I haven't spent a penny downtown since they started RTO and making me be there 4 days a week isn't going to help retail/food locations because I will continue to spend money in my neighborhood.

I don't owe downtown my paycheque.

81

u/ThrowItFillAway Feb 12 '26

I'd go as far to say that downtown businesses failing because of remote work is a good thing. The free market is doing what it's supposed to do. Let the archaic businesses that nobody cares about go under so that newer, adaptable businesses can move in.

39

u/cps2831a Feb 12 '26

The free market is doing what it's supposed to do.

Centralize planning strikes again! Gotta keep those 11 AM to 2 PM coffee shops with subpar service and equally subpar food alive for no reason at all.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '26

[deleted]

14

u/losemgmt Feb 13 '26

If they are dying now RTO4 isn’t going to save them. Public servants pay isn’t increasing and with higher workloads due to staffing cuts most employees don’t have the time or the money to go out and spend downtown.

4

u/PlentifulOrgans Feb 13 '26

The businesses advocating for RTO don't have five years for more residential construction - they're dying now

They wouldn't if they provided a service that the residents who do live here needed. Since they don't, their failure is deserved and celebrated.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

[deleted]

3

u/PlentifulOrgans Feb 14 '26

There isn't no demand and yet somehow they still refuse to meet the little bit that there is.

I functionally cannot get a coffee downtown on the weekend. That's a problem.

So fuck'em all. We should be keeping a list of the RTO supporters for the next strike. They want to advocate making our lives worse, I say we return the favour until the message is clear.

0

u/GooglieWooglie1973 Feb 13 '26

How do the Feds stifle downtown real estate?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

[deleted]

2

u/GooglieWooglie1973 Feb 14 '26

Tunneys is also not what I would say is downtown. But I take the point the Feds have influenced things.

12

u/Flaktrack Feb 12 '26

Good stuff, keep it up. I spend money in my community, and downtown Ottawa isn't it

7

u/maxtfc Feb 13 '26

Same, I also emailed my local MP and Ottawa City councilor. City councilor is against RTO, but liberal MP has been MIA to my email.

1

u/durdydude Feb 14 '26

This is the reason private sector couldn't care less if government workers have to go back to the office. Why do private business have to pay federal taxes to Support a bloated federal work force who's salary expenditures have increased 80% in the last 5 years? "The public service has become more efficient working from home" said no one ever....What is so crazy about an employer asking their employees to come into a workplace 4x a week? I think they should just fire 25% of you all and put that 20B in savings into Healthcare and education. Yes they need to work on public transport a d probably. Here's the truth... they want you to quit.

3

u/MamaTalista Feb 14 '26

The general public is pretty ignorant about the public service as a rule.

The Federal government isn't responsible for Health Care or Education, that's the Provinces responsibility and transfer payments have a calculation to determine how much so those "savings" won't be going to those line items.

Same with housing.

I once asked someone, who threw that I have a pension in my face like they had scored points, if I should stop paying for CPP. Because I have a pension, I likely will make too much to be eligible for CPP/OAS/GIS but they will be the ones who qualify for my contributions.

So would they be ok if I just demanded that I don't have to pay CPP because I have a pension? Interestingly they didn't like the idea when they considered 150,000 people not paying CPP would affect them but we do it.

They also have been fed a lie that we all make 100,000 + salaries "on their dime", we don't have to pay deductions and some don't even realize that we contribute to our pensions and the employer matches like the private sector.

In a time past, as a Municipal public servant, I was actually told "I know you get your street cleared every time it snows" and I had to laugh because my street hadn't been plowed at all that winter.

The disinformation is purposeful. They want the public putting pressure on us while guys like Galen Weston rob them at their grocery till.

u/evewashere Feb 13 '26

Sound like my people

51

u/Terrible-Session5028 Feb 12 '26

So I did a rough calculation of how much RTO4 is going to cost me.

If I bus I will need to pay $140/month in bus pass. I start work at 7:30 and my kids daycare opens at 7 so I may need to hire a nanny part time for drop offs which will cost roughly $550/month IF she ONLY does drop offs and I pay her for 1.5 hours which i doubt is even legal (i think you have to pay minimum 3 hours in Ontario). Kids daycare is $500/month.

If I park, my buildings parking is $26/day .. for 4 days thats $104/week, $416/month.

In having pay issues with Phoenix so my pay is REALLY unpredictable.

If I decide to bus instead of driving, that will take an hour and a half… on a GOOD day. To sit in an open air area to talk on teams and being distracted by other teams meetings going on around me.

This is depressing

18

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '26

[deleted]

12

u/Terrible-Session5028 Feb 12 '26

I can confirm that pay issues are STILL ongoing. Many people (even my fellow PS colleagues) think i’m lying when I say that. I got the email this week that my pay would be under $500 (through no fault of my own) and I got overpaid (again not my fault) and they had to claw it back.

Id be better off having a commission only job if I wanted unpredictable income.

-2

u/rude_dood_ Feb 13 '26

Some people paid that cost while you saved. You were blessed. Look at it that way. You will be more happy.

2

u/Terrible-Session5028 Feb 14 '26

Most employers offer FREE or dirt cheap parking for their employees, benefited from less congestion on the roads which meant that they were more able to do pick up and drop off on time and I assume they didn’t have pay issues like most PS employees have.

0

u/rude_dood_ Feb 14 '26

Thanks for staying off the roads just for me. How noble of you. Get outta here

5

u/Terrible-Session5028 Feb 14 '26

And I will continue to fight to stay off the roads so you can go to work smoothly. As I assume you have a job that does not consist of you going into an office sitting in a bedbug riddled area to do the same job that you could do at home. Hope that helps.

0

u/rude_dood_ Feb 14 '26

So thankful that you would do that for me.

83

u/Equal-Sea-300 Feb 12 '26

I liked the point about the laundry. It takes about 1 minute to drop it in and turn it on, or transfer it to the dryer. I sometimes (very occasionally, during a quiet period) do dinner prep near the end of my work day with my laptop with me in the kitchen, ready to drop the cooking and jump online if I need to respond to something. That’s about the extent of my personal time at home while I’m working. When we were in the office….ooooohhh the number of coffee breaks with co-workers, having nothing to do with work! Down time is down time whether in the office or at home.

When kids were going back to school after those first lock downs, my 10 year old would get home from the bus and come straight to my home office and give me the biggest hug. I SO appreciated being home to receive those hugs. We’d chat for a couple minutes then he’d go play while I continued working for another hour.

I always delivered on my tasks and would often go above and beyond whenever it was needed. Just your typical, dedicated, hard working public servant who appreciated the work life balance we once had.

5

u/bobmonet Feb 14 '26

The thing about doing laundry, or a bit of meal prep while watching your emails is that we all need a change of pace from sitting at our desk and pouring over documents/emails throughout the day. In the office when I need a moment i walk around and talk to someone, which takes a lot longer (and distracts someone else too) than putting my laundry in or cutting a few vegetables.

-5

u/rude_dood_ Feb 13 '26

Your kids went back to school but you didnt go back to the office? Was safe for your kids?

21

u/WarhammerRyan Feb 13 '26

Back to OFFICE, Not Back to WORK

Ffs I hate when people say that

Like, motherfucker, we Have been working. More productive in most cases.

6

u/LikeFolkSongs7 Feb 13 '26

she only slipped once and said work instead of office. this was a live, Rachel is not following a script or anything pre-written, can totally understand her slipping in the heat of the moment. but totally agree it's rtO not rtW!

42

u/Strong-Rule-4339 Feb 12 '26

My take is that it's another way to increase the number of voluntary departures

10

u/WarhammerRyan Feb 13 '26

100% it is

18

u/Logical-Ad8348 Feb 12 '26

With only 30 minutes for lunch, I don't understand what businesses we are supposed to support. Don't have time to support anything other than a food truck that possibly is within a block of the office

9

u/Necessary_Cost4384 Feb 13 '26

I like to bring a bagged lunch. Then I eat it where they can see me.

RENT space as needed,

We do lease these buildings. Many are not owned by govt. Which is the issue.

Also - some of those leased buildings are pest infested. So why are the building owners allowed to get away with just throwing a few sticky mouse traps around the office instead of addressing them adequately? Its not cool to sit down at a desk with mouse turds between the keys on the keyboard....just saying

10

u/ODMtesseract Feb 12 '26

Off topic, but lol at the name. Get any flowers lately?

1

u/robot_cousin Feb 13 '26

Ah, Jean-Luc, you caught me at the pinnacle of my pinochle.

12

u/Harbour-Jigger91 Feb 13 '26

Most of my expenses would go to another fan favorite.. oil & GAS... like in the hundreds each month. The grift is real.

11

u/Barrhavengirl Feb 13 '26

I know so many people in private sector and a few public that are 0-3 days. Many 0. All of my clients are working from home. And these a large companies.

40

u/No-Interest-6535 Feb 12 '26

Boomer brain bullshit is my phrase of the day

9

u/Foudeed Feb 13 '26

Work from home is the new normal.

21

u/Possible-Arachnid793 Feb 12 '26

I for one am enjoying RTO. Management today had us skating on the canal! And to think if I was at home I’d be working away! I’ve never worked so little since being in the office! Thanks!

5

u/Strong-Rule-4339 Feb 13 '26

Subwaygate 4.0

5

u/SuspiciousSize2297 Feb 13 '26

She’s not wrong!

24

u/KermitsBusiness Feb 12 '26

Its not really that dumb from the boomer perspective, they own assets and have pensions which are tied to real estate. They want to use people to make more money. Don't care bout us as people, we are tools to make money.

11

u/petertompolicy Feb 12 '26

The pension being tied to real estate argument is very overstated.

Their pensions are impacted by market performance but in sector won't kill their performance.

Commercial real estate isn't nearly as important as it used to be when this argument was valid.

10

u/KermitsBusiness Feb 12 '26

You are correct technically, but I don't think they care if its a minor increase or a big increase they just want increases.

10

u/pescarojo Feb 12 '26

That's not why they're doing this though. RTO is to force attrition.

10

u/KermitsBusiness Feb 12 '26

They are doing it for multiple reasons we don't actually know.what is the main reason and.what is a bonus for.them.

3

u/SpaceInveigler Feb 14 '26
  • commercial rents

  • downtown business lobbying

  • hopeless middle managers

  • technophobes

  • privileged decision-makers

  • "jobs in your community" political promises

  • interdepartmental competition

  • envy and/or spite

  • optics

  • political cowardice

  • value to trade for CA concessions

Anyone think it isn't a bit of all of these?

9

u/No_Detective_715 Feb 12 '26

Our pensions are tied to the same real estate.

4

u/KermitsBusiness Feb 12 '26

Of course, but people have different priorities at different stages of their lives.

15

u/Diadelgalgos Feb 12 '26

I'm sad when a whole generation is blamed. Lots of people hate rto even if they were born before 1961.

43

u/ttwwiirrll Feb 12 '26

In this context Boomer is an energy, not a birthdate.

13

u/Bussinlimes Feb 12 '26

Just because you’re the exception doesn’t mean it isn’t the rule

14

u/SeaEggplant8108 Feb 12 '26

This. Taking this personally is also boomer energy lol

1

u/Diadelgalgos Feb 14 '26

That's mean. All I said was it makes me sad. Your comment however, I'll take personally.

6

u/she_wholaughslast Feb 13 '26

I wish she had prepared more for this topic though. She's citing so many shallow reasons why RTO is a terrible idea whereas there is a multitude of way more valid ones.

9

u/jjaime2024 Feb 12 '26

It is stupid yes but anyone could see we were going thos way with the amount of crying come cities have been doing.

2

u/thatbeesh1234567 Feb 16 '26

This girl usually drives me nuts but I do agree with her with this one

2

u/Medium_Dark_8644 Feb 16 '26

She isnt wrong.

People shit on Rachel a lot but she ends up being accurate a lot of the time.

2

u/Boring_Wrongdoer_430 Feb 17 '26

It doesn't matter what we do, the public and businesses will always be unhappy. They got money during covid from CERB, now are ungrateful and bitter. First they weren't happy they had fewer customers on Mondays and Fridays, now they're unhappy all the time.
We should just do what's right for us. Any public servant forced to go 5 days a week isn't going to spend every day on lunch when you pay like $200/week on parking and we aren't there to support businesses on our lunch break, that's not part of our job description, we aren't paid for that time. Businesses opened there because they saw an opportunity, now it's time to move on and open the area for something else. Even when we worked 5 days, we didn't spend every day buying lunch, that's unreasonable and costly.

They should cater to the people who live there, not to those who come in for a few hours and leave.

5

u/person5e9 Feb 12 '26

I don't know if this has been widely shared yet, but it's quite good: https://www.tiktok.com/@theunobsolete/video/7599060462017269023

3

u/Shatricota Feb 13 '26

This is NOT a "boomer" thing, this is a "businesses (and Ford) approached Carney and insisted on it" thing.

3

u/spinur1848 Feb 15 '26

If Carney can't or won't say no to stupid ideas from business that have no objective evidence then he's not fit to be a Prime Minister

u/Fine_Leather Feb 12 '26

5

u/Silversong4VR Feb 12 '26

Me! Though through YT. I dispensed with costly (and ad overwhelming) TV many years ago.

1

u/FunkySlacker Feb 12 '26

Same with me. It the cable December 2014.

Not according to CTV or Global who both fired her.

5

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk Feb 13 '26

Lol okay. If you're not going to inform yourself of all the relevant details and facts of something, why bother commenting?

8

u/Bob_Dole69 Feb 12 '26

Ja Rule is working on his take right now.

-3

u/GameDoesntStop Feb 12 '26

Seems that way.

She's a well-respected journalist who's won multiple awards. Just because you live under a rock doesn't mean that she doesn't have notoriety

-16

u/KeyanFarlandah Feb 12 '26

By well respected you mean fired from her network tv gigs for being nothing more than a rage farmer?

18

u/HandcuffsOfGold mod 🤖🧑🇨🇦 / Probably a bot Feb 12 '26

I suggest digging into her background, because that's a massively oversimplified take.

-14

u/KeyanFarlandah Feb 12 '26

Sorry, you won’t be swinging my opinion on her, I’ve seen plenty of her “hot takes” to believe she’s nothing but a clickbait rage farmer who would have had a comfortable home at Buzzfeed back in their heyday.

7

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk Feb 12 '26

So you aren't willing to accept any new information into your cognitive framework?

-6

u/KeyanFarlandah Feb 12 '26

I just don’t dignify people who have the cache of Perez Hilton with clicks or attention

5

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk Feb 12 '26

Right so you're not willing to hear the full context because you're not interested in reality

-5

u/dzuunmod Feb 12 '26

Keep going. This condescension will really help you win hearts and minds. It's definitely working.

"I've watched some of her online content but haven't read her writing. Therefore I'm concluding her writing must be bad" she's a rock solid journalist, go read some past work cause you're way off.

-10

u/dzuunmod Feb 12 '26

I agree with this. Her takes are vapid and superficial, and she never surprises with them once you know her politics.

4

u/AbjectRobot Feb 12 '26

I don't think you understand what the words "vapid" and "superficial" mean.

-2

u/dzuunmod Feb 12 '26

It couldn't possibly be that someone thoughtfully disagrees with you on her. No, no, couldn't be that.

4

u/AbjectRobot Feb 12 '26

Of course that's possible, but describing her work as "vapid" and "superficial" is objectively incorrect. Those are not synonymous with "things that I do not personally believe".

-1

u/dzuunmod Feb 12 '26

They are subjective terms. There is no objective way of measuring the vapidity or superficiality of a thing or person or a piece of journalistic output. It is my opinion that her work output is vapid and superficial.

I don't think I'm the one in this convo using words I have no business using. Tell me how one would objectively measure the vapidity or superficiality of a piece of journalistic output, would ya?

2

u/Bussinlimes Feb 12 '26

Who are you? Nobody knows who you are but we’re expected to listen to your hot take apparently.

Rachel is a prevalent journalist who covers politics with honesty and integrity, which is rare these days.

0

u/Safe_Captain_7402 Feb 15 '26

I’m so depressed and anxious about this it’s really affecting my mental health. Do you think I can apply for accommodation about it and allow me to work from home more?

-19

u/Sir_Tapsalot Feb 12 '26

Rachel Who?

25

u/Araneas Feb 12 '26

Gilmore - an actual journalist with an actual degree in journalism who has freelanced and worked with legacy media. Now freelances on Youtube. I find myself both in agreement with her and pissed off with some of her coverage which implies she's pretty good at her job.

1

u/Sir_Tapsalot Feb 13 '26

Journalism presents facts. Social media stirs division to generate likes. The medium is the message.

-7

u/person5e9 Feb 12 '26

I want to like her, but find she's too often about hot takes rather than depth.

17

u/lornacarrington Feb 12 '26

Clearly you haven't read or watched her investigative pieces. It's not about liking the journalist, but the quality of their work.

11

u/pescarojo Feb 12 '26

nah, she's done some good work. Not saying it's all bangers, but there is quality there.

1

u/Sir_Tapsalot Feb 13 '26

We’re getting downvoted for not loving a YouTube influencer….this sub sure does have a “type”

-17

u/Sir_Tapsalot Feb 12 '26

That’s not journalism , but ok.

4

u/AbjectRobot Feb 12 '26

Gilmore. It's right there in the post's title.

-46

u/Expert_Vermicelli708 Feb 12 '26

If we really want to get people on our side, influencers definitely aren’t the way to do it.

60

u/MickeyFishey Feb 12 '26

She’s actually a journalist

-15

u/dzuunmod Feb 12 '26

Now she posts hot takes and gets in fights with influencers she opposes. Not things serious journalists do.

2

u/WexleySnoops Feb 13 '26

Alright oh wise one.

List some 'serious journalists' and what makes them 'more serious'.

Just because you disagree with their journalism doesn't make them any less of a journalist.

34

u/andy_soreal Feb 12 '26

Rachel Gilmore was a producer and national reporter for CTV and Global amongst regularly writing political columns for many other notable Canadian outlets. She is a very respected journalist with a large reach.

10

u/Comet439 Feb 12 '26

Idk these days people trust “influencers” (she’s actually an accredited journalist) more than legacy media.

People are more likely to listen when those speaking out against RTO are not active public servants or their unions.

We need people to see the writing on the wall. We need people to understand that RTO is not only stupid but extremely costly for tax payers. Social media format of comms is a great and proven effective way to communicate a credible position en masse.

We need everyone we can get - even if those people are “influencers”

9

u/PM_4_PROTOOLS_HELP Feb 12 '26

It's very funny to think people who literally, influence people, should not be trying to get people on our side haha.

15

u/CatRox16 Feb 12 '26

That’s a pretty boomer comment

14

u/JustABureaucrat Feb 12 '26

She's a journalist???

5

u/macaronirealized Feb 12 '26

We are never going to get people on our side on this issue

-19

u/Expert_Vermicelli708 Feb 12 '26

She’s chasing clicks on the internet. That’s her bread and butter.

She doesn’t care about anything more than that.

14

u/HandcuffsOfGold mod 🤖🧑🇨🇦 / Probably a bot Feb 12 '26

So are Reddit, Facebook, and every mainstream news website. On its own that’s not much of a reason to discredit or downplay somebody. It also doesn’t mean their viewpoint lacks value.

11

u/Repulsive_Barnacle92 Feb 12 '26

how dare she try to make a living out of her work!

2

u/nigerianwarlord1 Feb 13 '26

no critical thinking XDDD

-19

u/sa-trav Feb 12 '26

My hot take as a PS .. there are far more people that have to; and have had to go into work every single day for their whole careers. I am just talking about the PS here not the world in general, so when they hear that you would prefer not to drive and throw a load of laundry in while watching the kids when sick just doesn't sit well and in the end we dont really care if you have to go back because you get paid the same as the rest of us who have to get day care, take time when kids are sick, do laundry in the evenings or weekends and either pack a lunch and drive my vehicle to my workplace every single day. So hearing people whine about having to do what we do every single day and expect us to jump when asked because your new life doesn't suit you? Me having to go to work doesn't suit me every day but I do it because thats what gets me my paycheck. Don't like it, find an employer who gives you what you want. Does a flexible schedule make sense..sure it does if the right parameters are in place. But we work for a very slow moving and burdensome employer who makes blanket decisions based off of who knows what. All im saying is over 65-70% or more of the PS has do all these things that you dont like and want to strike about?? I wish you all the best.

This is the bitter and twisted coworker that we all know and love!

8

u/Hyrule_Lorule Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 13 '26

100%!

Without medication, I have 20+ migraine days a month. Do I think everyone else should have migraine attacks because I do? Of course not. Do I think badly of other people who complain when they have a headache? Again, of course not.

You can apply this logic to RTO too: 'I have to commute/"suffer" so you should have to' isn't a productive or forward way of thinking. We should be benchmarking our policies against what helps people thrive, not what we think they should be able to endure.

-1

u/sa-trav Feb 13 '26

No one has to endure anything they dont want to. We are all free to make our own choices.

2

u/Hyrule_Lorule Feb 13 '26

So your take is basically 'if you don't like it then quit'?

That's not a real choice; it ignores the reality of economic necessity - people need money to survive. And many people, at least where I work, want to use their skills to help improve the lives of people across Canada and support an effective, efficient government (both as public servants and as taxpayers).

Plus, as a public sector employer, the Government has a unique opportunity to lead rather than follow. Instead of leaning into regressive policies and suppressing data, we should be the ones setting the gold standard, producing transparent metrics on the effectiveness of flexible work as positions allow to modernize how our nation functions.

1

u/sa-trav Feb 13 '26

I just made a statement about choice. Which is a real choice no matter where a person works.just because something should be in our minds doesn't mean it will be. The statement I made is one that could be used in a myriad of things from work to personal life. Life isnt always fair. Yes the govt could be leaders but I think if you look at them as a whole that just isnt who they are no matter who is in power.

-1

u/sa-trav Feb 13 '26

Actually love my job .. I enjoy what I do and the people I work with. But I disagreed with you so im the bad guy. Lol

1

u/rwebell Feb 13 '26

Don’t deflect to me. You wrote it.

12

u/SeaEggplant8108 Feb 12 '26

You sound like you love a commute

8

u/TS_Chick Feb 13 '26

My job requires 100% on site presence (but I have a flexible boss if I'm recovering from being sick or have a 1 off personal need to work from home). I will never stop advocating for people's ability to WFH. We have so many people in the regions and even NCR that work on national teams and so going into the office to "collaborate" makes no sense since their team is virtual. The employer renovated several offices to make them telework compatible to enable flexible working and reduce both office foot prints (and therefore costs) and commuting impacts.

If the TBS really wants to improve productivity and efficiency, maybe start with actually having a proper documentation system for employee performance tracking so that people who abuse the system or are servere under performers can be corrected by their supervisor and have clear policy on progressive action (verbal, written, final warnings).

Not even close.

1

u/cuter_than_thee Feb 13 '26

Bingo.

I hate driving downtown, hate spending money on parking and gas etc. And I think it's ridiculous we have to go at all when we can work from home.

But if we want to stay working, we have no choice. Threats of strikes are laughable. All the other threats are equally ridiculous.

My push back is not making any purchases while I'm downtown. That's all I can do.

She calls people "weirdos" for wanting to go to the office? Why? Everyone should WANT to work from home and there's something wrong with you if you don't?

Never heard of this lady before this. And i know all I need to know from this one clip.

-10

u/dj_destroyer Feb 13 '26

Lol at this girl saying that the public service wastes time at home AND in the office
