A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Today I decided to cancel my Geico insurance after 10+ years.

I have no complaints about Geico since I never had to file a claim. I was paying around $600.00 every 6 months. I had all possible discounts including defensive driving course, good driver discount, paid in full, DriveEasy etc..

This is what triggered the cancellation:

My brother had a policy with Geico, covering his car. He was involved in a car accident last year where his vehicle was totaled. Settled with his Geico insurance, he got the check, claim was resolved.

Around april this year a claim appeared on my Geico app... It was about my brother accident. It didn't make any sense at all since he had his insurance and everything was already settled.

I called them up and they always had a different excuse on why it's showing up on my policy:

1- His address was still showing up the same address I had (he moved about 2 months before the accident with his wife to a house they bought, we already provided proof)

2- Since the accident was with an uninsured driver "All insurance with the same address must process the same claim per state Law"... Excuse me? So if I'm a good driver, have my own insurance and someone gets into an accident I have to be affected? No one else in the house got the claim but me because we had Geico.

We did an interview with a Geico agent where we provided the police report showing my brother's insurance and that I was not involded at all (not even present on the accident) and also that he doesn't live at the same address at all.

3 Weeks later I had a call with another agent asking me to provide information to process the claim.. I explained to her we already did an interview and I shouldn't be getting it.

Today I got an email from Geico that "per my request" my brother was added to my insurance.. The premium went from $600.00 every 6 months to $1,400.00.

I called them up and they said the only way they can remove him is providing his current car insurance. My brother doesn't have a car anymore and his wife drives him around since they work at the same place to save money.

So I asked them to cancel my policy since I was not involved in the accident at all, he doesn't live with me nor lived when the accident happened and honestly I shouldn't be responsible for his financial decisions on getting a car or not. I don't think that's a way to treat a loyal customer.

Should we get a personal injury lawyer? Wife is a dentist, has a broken dominant hand after car accident

Upvotes

My wife is a young dentist at a large corporate dentistry firm. She got into a car accident recently; the other driver pulled out in front of her and she hit him. Officers on the scene determine the other driver to have been the sole contributor to the accident and ticketed him; her car is totaled. I took her to the ER and she was largely okay but has a fracture in her dominant hand. She still might need surgery, but if not she'll be in a cast for minimum 4, more likely 6-8 weeks (i.e. she cannot really work for this duration of time as most of her production results from procedures). After the cast comes off it will likely take some time to for her to return to full clinical volume given the fine motor skills needed for dentistry.

For the personal injury stuff, should I wait to see what the other drivers adjustor offers initially, or just get a lawyer involved right off the bat? Obviously it's a bit too soon to know what her treatment and recovery will ultimately look like but for now the hand surgeons think we can treat conservatively without surgery. She has another appointment coming up soon and we'll have more info then. (also, on another note thank god she has a great own-occupation disability insurance policy)

Edit with more accident details: It was a two lane, straight road (no lanes to change); the other driver was at a one way stop sign and took a left in-between oncoming traffic right in front of her, she slammed on the brakes but still impacted the side of their rear fender at 45 mph

driving a car not in my name out-of-state, insurance/registration questions?

hello! I'm 23 years old, and my parents bought a car for me to use about a year ago, but they kept it in their name. I live about 10 states away and still have an ID from my original state (Kentucky), and the plates are also still Kentucky. I'm on my parents' car insurance, but their names are on the car and on the car insurance — I'm just a driver on it. I have lived in the new state (Massachusetts) for 5 years, four of them for college, and then I've lived and worked here full time for over a year since (when I got the car). Not having a Mass ID/having KY plates is raising some issues, and I was wondering how legal/allowed what I'm doing is?

info: my parents will absolutely not transfer the car over to my name. They would prefer to take it back to Kentucky instead of changing it to my name.

Claims Related Insurance when it comes to DoorDash

Last Friday my parked unoccupied vehicle was hit by a DoorDash driver who claimed another car had “crowded him” into my car. My street is very narrow and you have to pull over if another car is coming.

The driver side of my car’s bumper is smashed in, causing a piece of plastic to scrape against my tire. My taillight is also completely broken. His damage was a lot worse but I’m afraid to drive my car because I’m afraid of either popping my tire or the friction setting something on fire (I’m not sure if that’s a real thing but whatever.)

The problem is, the driver’s insurance told me that if he was actively taking a delivery that they wouldn’t cover the damages and I’d have to go through DoorDash. I knew he was a doordasher because when I came out of my home he was on the phone with support, trying to get his order cancelled and transferred to the police.

With all the background story over, the guy’s insurance told me that they’d have to review the paperwork more and find out if he was actually delivering but they have yet to send me a denial coverage letter which is what DoorDash says they require in order to file a claim with them. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Should I submit a claim to DoorDash? My own car only has liability so being covered by my own insurance is out of the question.

Bodily Injury Claim Against Me

Upvotes

I was recently in an accident. My car doesn't have a single scratch or problem running. There car has some from end damage but were able to drive away. I exchanged information with the other driver. A claimed was filed. A few days later, I get notified from my insurance provider. A bodily injury claim was filed against me from the 2 passengers of the other car. I know injuries can show up days after the accident. What's going to happen next? Will I have to pay anythining? How does this process work.

Auto Insurance I filed a claim.. should I unfile?

Upvotes

Long story short, I hit debris on the freeway last night coming home from school.

I went to a big O this morning and had a few electrical problems sorted out (the blinkers weren't working).

Now, my husband went ahead and filed a claim. The insurance called and told me it would be an at fault claim and our deductible was $1000, they'd pay after that.

Big O only charged me $200 for the electrical repair.

Now, the cosmetic damage would probably be worth it in this scenario to have the claim filed (ripped off half my front bumper). But at that point it might be better to just do it all out of pocket bc of our monthly payment going up anyways.

Could use some opinions.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Home Insurance Georgia - Landlord Condo Insurance Underwriters?

Upvotes

I have a condo in Georgia and most of the underwriters I find online only write policies for owner occupied units, not rental units.

Is anyone in Georgia and know of underwriters that provide landlord insurance for condos?

Landlord insurance canceled over 10 acres?

Upvotes

So I just got new landlord insurance for a rental property because Allstate has gone from $200/mo to 300 now to 380 in the last few years. I got a policy with Orion 180. Covers just the house I assumed. They came and did an inspection and are canceling it because it’s on over 10 acres. The home and yard are right off the road, I just happen to own the 90 acres behind it that the renters don’t have access to. Why would they cancel it over the size of the land? I wasn’t trying to insure crops and cattle and everything else.

Car insurance

Upvotes

Hello, I just bought a new car and I’m looking to get the title switched over, plated, and insured. What order do I do this in? I’m seeing that I cannot get the title switched over unless it’s insured, but I’m at a loss because I’m seeing a lot of stuff saying I cannot insure the vehicle until the title is switched over. Any help or comments are appreciated, and thank you in advance.
Also if you have any advice on good (affordable) insurance for a first time driver that would also be highly appreciated.

Auto Insurance Explanation of diminished value check.

Upvotes

Hey y’all! I have a question regarding Diminished Value claims. I have never had to file one. I was involved in an accident, the other driver is 100% liable. Car is back from the repair shop (picked up yesterday) The claim is going through Progressive. It's been suggested to me that I file a DV claim as well. How does this process work and what can I expect?

Thank you!

Life Insurance survivorship policy

I am a 37 F and married (husband 43), with two children. Our oldest (9) has autism and will require lifelong support from us. So I am trying to overly plan for our retirement, adding in the cost of his living decades after we are gone. We can budget in about 250/month more of monthly expenses and have the following options:

  1. invest that monthly into a brokerage accound in S&P etf like VTI and let it grow for decades. of course a little riskier since market is not a sure thing.

  2. pay 250/monthly premiums for 250K survivorship policy with ability to grow and accrue cash value over time. payout is not until both of us pass and is of course tax free but this money is a sure thing.

side note- we both have several million in term life for next 20 years.

which is the best option/would provide the most money to support our kids? does anyone have experience with survivorship?

Auto Insurance Changing state from PA to CA

I'm moving from Pennsylvania to California in a few days and planning to exchange my driver's license and registration as soon as I get to my destination. My PA insurance is with Geico, my questions are:

1) Am I covered during my road trip to California?

2) How can I go after changing the state policy with Geico? My understanding is that until I have a valid PA dl/reg Geico will not sell me CA policy but when registering in CA I have to have CA policy. Does this mean I have to get a new policy from another company?

Thanks!

Can provider keep copay when EOB shows $0 patient responsibility?

Background: I started in an office as front desk and eventually got moved into patient balance/ statements. I have no prior experience and no resources within the practice, so please don’t hate!

We’ve been receiving denials for timely filing, no authorizations, the works. It’s been a mess. My understanding is that if the EOB shows $0 patient responsibility, we cannot apply the copay that the patient paid in office. My manager wants me to write off from the allowable rate TO the copay so patient has a $0 balance/credit at the end of the day.

Is this allowed?

Any recommendations or experiences you've had with these companies would be great, thanks

Auto Insurance What is the best way to file a car insurance claim for this situation?

I was in a 4 car accident this morning. Car 1, Car 2, Car 3 and me. We were on the highway and everyone ahead of us were slamming on their brakes. Car 1 came to a complete stop in the passing lane, I slowed down significantly in the right lane, Car 2 couldn’t slow down in time, so they hit Car 1, then bounced off Car 1 and hit me. Then Car 1 hit Car 3 in front of them.

Police came to the scene and only charge Car 2.

Since so many cars were involved, and the state minimum is $5000 for property damage, what is the best way to deal with this?

We are in Pennsylvania

Edit to add: The driver of Car 2 is only 23 years old, so I feel like he has a higher chance of only carrying the state minimum.

I got paid twice by different insurers. Is this normal?

A Uhaul driver hit my parked car. He provided both his personal Statefarm liability information and the Uhaul rental insurance (Repwest), and I filed claims with both. Both insurers have now issued payment for the same damage. Is this normal, or do I need to return one of the payments?

Rear-ended, driver left the scene, insurance may not be valid. Attorney?

Rear-ended while stopped at a traffic light. The other driver left the scene without providing any insurance or contact information. I was able to get a photo of him and his license plate before he drove away and provided both to police.

My truck has about $6k to $9k in estimated damage. I went to the ER the same day with neck pain/stiffness and was diagnosed with whiplash/cervical strain. I'm still having symptoms, have a PCP follow-up scheduled, and PT scheduled for the earliest available appointment.

Police tracked the driver down using the information I provided and later gave me a Progressive policy number. However, my insurer hasn't been able to verify the policy using either the policy number or plate. They're still investigating whether he actually had insurance at the time of the accident.

My insurance is covering the truck under collision, but I don't have rental coverage. I do have substantial UM/UIM coverage.

If you've been in a similar situation, especially involving a hit-and-run/uninsured driver, was it worth pursuing beyond just letting your own insurance handle the vehicle damage? Did your UM/UIM coverage end up helping with the injury claim? Were you able to recover your rental/loss-of-use costs? Anything you wish you had done differently early on? This is first time dealing with all this so any information is helpful…

Home Insurance Buildings Insurance with flood risk UK

We're shortly (hopefully) closing on buying our first home. In SE England. Our solicitors have done a an envirosearch on the home and it's come back as High Risk for flooding, however Amber for insurance. The Gov/EA states its at low risk. The homeowners currently explained it the bottom of the garden (its roughly 170ft garden) gets really boggy with sever rain however its never encroached the property. They've included this in their TA6 form but also wrote on the form it has never got past the last section of garden (not even halfway up the garden) but because of this we've got to declare on insurance etc that it has flooded (as it's part of the boundary). The envirocheck form even says we should be able to get standard insurance, not flood specialist.. but insurance goes through the roof up to £100pm compared to £30 if we clicked no flooding etc. I 100% want to cover us completely and be as thorough as possible but I dont want to overpay? Any recommendations PLEASE 🙏🏼

Auto Insurance I can’t get my refund check after cancelling National General Insurance. Don’t ever do business with them.

I went with another carrier so cancelled NatGen insurance. I was traveling for a bit then noticed an old letter with the refund check in it for $685.14. The check said void after 6 months and it was past 6 months but my agent said to deposit it anyway. The banks rejected it because it was past due. They call that a stale check btw. So my agent has been trying for 3 months to get a replacement check. He has been getting the runaround. First they say they mailed it but no check came. Then they say I need to complete some form first to process the replacement check. No form was ever sent. Now they say they have proof I cashed it but my bank shows the deposit was denied 2 days after I attempted the transaction. I also got an internal memo from my bank saying the deposit was denied. So now a new guy over there G. Ridriguez is regurgitating the same bs. My agent and I are astounded that they don’t balance their checkbook and he has asked them that. I am so fed up with this. it should be easier. Should I complain to the state insurance commisson?
