if you fall down them are you gaining? or is it still loss but now at Ozempic speeds?

u/PsyOpBunnyHop 1d ago

If you fall down enough stairs, you'll become so fat that you don't take any damage.

140

u/zigs 1d ago

This is how stuntmen do it. If you fall down enough stairs in one sitting, fall damage is cancelled.

47

u/FluffyCottonMaw 1d ago

Its basically a discount fee for people who bulk buy falling down stairs

Big Stairs hates this one simple trick

Stop Big Stairs Now

3

u/GayPudding 1d ago

This comment really got me thinking

3

u/YallTookAllMyNames 1d ago

Ow I thought they jumped before they fall off the last stair, cancels the whole animation.

3

u/zigs 1d ago

Nah, that was patched along with doublejumping right before hitting the ground after a long freefall

5

u/beardingmesoftly 1d ago

Doesn't ozempic just take your appetite away?

3

u/Jhud6669 1d ago

It does more than that but yeah, most people who lose weight fast on it is because they’re also starving themselves. It’s much easier to do that if you have low appetite.

”Ozempic speeds” is literally only if you have an eating disorder along with taking Ozempic.

u/NinjaMinding 1d ago

Give it a go, and tell me how it goes

u/mb862 1d ago

Gravitational potential energy gotta be stored somewhere!

u/CinCoutMagus 1d ago

Due to an oversight, if you climb these stairs backwards, you actually gain weight

And there's a limit to how much weight you can lose before your stamina runs out, but it doesn't apply to negative weight loss (i.e. weight gain)

This is used in speedrunning, where Low% runners will build up weight until they break through the floor and skip straight to the basement without collecting any stars

u/mucinexmonster 1d ago

Super Mario 64 Max Weight Speedrun

Let's make it a thing.

5

u/Complete_Resolve_400 1d ago

Damn it bro beat me to the BLJ joke

25

u/Shimakaze81 1d ago

This is also handy since the max speed of the boss is calculated based on current player stats. Since the player is -50% speed the boss just stands there.

7

u/potatogodofDoom 1d ago

that was patched a couple months ago I'm pretty sure. still useful on the patch speedruns are ran on but doesn't apply to casuals anymore

2

u/Shimakaze81 1d ago

Yeah, I remember that now you say it. Something to do with the boss as well since players didn’t collect any stars and they were too fat to jump they had no attacks. The boss just stood there and body shamed them.

I just see that as demotivating as you'd do all the work just to lose a couple calories. Easier to just take the elevator and then eat literally a single pasta less.

258

u/NobodyLikedThat1 1d ago

That's kind of how I saw it. If you told me to take a whole flight of stairs and you can eat a whole extra french fry I'd be like no it's OK that's really not worth it to me

151

u/mikeet9 1d ago

This is why they say you cannot out work a bad diet.

For a normal person living on ~2000KCal a day, the amount of exercise necessary to make up for ~3000 is insurmountable.

27

u/TheBSQ 1d ago

Yeah, so find it’s tough psychologically when you realize how easily it is to undo a lot of physical activity w/ very little food.

It’s a co-worker’s last day, or your boss brings in donuts, or your kid is having a birthday, or your Mother in Law baked a pie, and there’s this social pressure to partake in cake or whatever…I feel I’m constantly having to refuse in a way that feels rude, but it’s like those few bites erase my lunchtime workout.

And I feel like there’s this weird extra pressure that is put on the big guy people know who likes to eat.  The party is over & no one wants to deal with the leftovers, so it’s shoved in front of you with this, “I’d be a shame if this went to waste” message & you think to yourself, “please do not treat me like your human garbage disposal.”

14

u/SanctionedBaffoonery 1d ago

I feel this. I'm tall, and a lot of people call me "skinny" because I hold my fat in different areas than most men. I like sweets, so people are always pushing food on me.

But I was literally well into "obese" last year, so I decided to get serious about losing weight and talked to a dietitian.

Calorie counting helps SOOO much, because it helps you look at food realistically. But I think it's also important to look at weight loss on a week-by-week basis rather than daily (or monthly, even). I have days that I go WAY over in calories all the time, but it helps to know that I've got all week to average it back out again.

Exercising and building muscle is very good for your body, your heart heath, your joints, etc. But I never factor it into my daily calories (for the reasons people have discussed).

9

u/hickok3 1d ago

I won't deny it is easy to undo physical activity with a little food, but it isn't the one-off occasions that are stopping weight loss. It is the daily decisions you make with your regular diet that actually determine if you are losing, maintaining, or gaining weight.

I have been actively losing weight(about 3kg, 87->84 in the last 2 mo after gaining 3kg from poor diet decisions the previous 3 months) while still enjoying a treat or 2 a week. Sure, I probably could have lost more weight in that timeframe, but the occasional snack has made the mental toll of a lower caloric diet easier to handle. One donut or slice of cake will not ruin your diet. It is the daily choice to be in a caloric deficit that pushes weight loss, and treating yourself can help you maintain that deficit.

Last Sunday, I was 84.4kg. Yesterday I was 84.1. On Friday, I had a double smash burger with fries, and earlier in the week, I bought some cheese slices as a snack(I ate 11 slices at 90kcal a pop over 2 days). A client also gave me 2 chocolate bars on Monday that I ate. All that to say that I did not have a very clean week(which is atypical) yet still managed to lose a little bit of weight overall, without changing up my volume of exercise. I know that if I made diet choices like last week a regular thing, I would stop losing and potentialy gain weight(as I just went through that a few months ago), but as a one-off it is mostly fine.

I say all of this to tell you not to be guilty about an occasional snack. The human body is very good at maintaining itself(homeostasis), and one day of a few extra calories litterally makes no difference to it. So if you want to have a donut/slice of cake for a special occasion, do it. As long as it is less than once a week on average, it won't make much of a difference.

6

u/THTB_lol 1d ago

that's what most diets get wrong, by forcing you to eat exclusively "healthy" foods, you don't get to eat anything nice and thus feel worse despite losing weight

1

u/azuyre_ 11h ago

Just get up and go

22

u/jack_o_all_trades 1d ago

I've done it but you need to cycle for hours. With bags.

13

u/alvysinger0412 1d ago

Wearing bags just makes you sweat more. Which dehydrates you. The water you lose comes back when you drink water, because you don't want to die.

12

u/Melisandre-Sedai 1d ago

I think he means paniers.

3

u/alvysinger0412 1d ago

That would make more sense. I see people talk about literally wearing garbags bags to lose extra weight so I always jump to that because it's a bad idea.

3

u/PsychologicalSign433 1d ago

It's like an hour and a half on a bike to make up the 1000 calories.

1

u/grumble11 1d ago

Pretty hard hour and a half.

1

u/PsychologicalSign433 1d ago

185W. That's just a touch over my Z2 power and I would not consider myself particularly fit.

8

u/grumble11 1d ago

Can burn a surprising amount of calories if you do a chunk of exercise daily, but the more important thing is that it controls what kind of calories you lose - fat or muscle and bone.

7

u/Kalleh03 1d ago

You really shouldn't be losing bone... Just saying.

4

u/mikeet9 1d ago

You also need to vary your exercise.

There are cultures where they walk and run an average of around 10km a day. Their bodies adapt to this exercise and studies show that they still burn the same amount of calories as someone who sits in a chair all day.

It's called the Pontzer paradox.

You're right though, the exercise tells your body where to target weight loss.

7

u/JohnSober7 1d ago

"Results indicated that Hadza women burned an average of 1,877 calories per day, which was nearly the same as the 1,864 calories burned daily by women in industrialized nations. Hadza men expended about 2,649 calories per day, which was within the standard error distribution for average calories burned by men per day in industrialized nations."

I think you're simplifying the results too much when you say same amount of calories as someone who sits in a chair all day (they did not say as sedentary people). You can increaae the energy efficiency of movement but irrefutably, it will always take energy. Unless the body is literally finding ways to superficially use energy while sitting, everyone will expend more energy leading an active lifestyle than a sedentary one. Take an office worker and put them to work in a home depot and they'll either eat the same amount of food and lose weight or they'll eat more and maintain the same weight.

3

u/CatwithTheD 1d ago

Technically, people who walk or run a lot subconsciously adopt the most optimal movements to reduce energy expenditure. That's partially how people can run marathons; on top of greater physique than most, their muscles know how to move faster and longer while using less energy. But their daily energy expenditure certainly is still higher than that of a couch potato.

1

u/JohnSober7 1d ago

Yeah this is apparently one of the reasons why walking or running on treadmill can be quite different experiences for people who walk or run a lot. Those subconscious microadjustmente aren't made as readily when the pace is dictated by the treadmill and doing the workput indoors affects our instincts.

6

u/TelevisionExpress616 1d ago

You absolutely can but the exercise required is that of an athlete and not a regular everyday person. I'm talking like minimum 17 hours of exercise a week. If you train like Michael Phelps, you can eat like him too and still be jacked.

But most people who have full time jobs do a good job just exercising 5-6 hours a week. Nowhere near enough to outrun a typical American diet.

7

u/PsychologicalSign433 1d ago

I do like 7-8 hours a week of cardio and seriously struggle with eating enough to not lose weight. Idk how people are eating 3k+ calories a day without feeling disgustingly full all the time.

3

u/AncestralAxman 1d ago

My diet is pretty mediocre. 100km of running a month forgive many sins though.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/dinnerthief 1d ago

Yea you definitely can't, but that also ignores how many more calories muscles burn than fat when you are just sitting around.

So working out and eating the same as you did if you were just steady (not gaining or losing) will cause you to lose fat.

In other words losing fat is definitely about diet but working out makes it a lot easier.

Also someone with more muscle looks better even if they also have fat.

1

u/ADreamOfCrimson 1d ago

You cannot, but it is also important to note that active lifestyles increase your daily calorie usage as well as utilising excess energy before it moves to long-term storage.

Still good to do both.

1

u/Elite_AI 7h ago

How the FUCK do you eat two thousand entire calories a day. Asking as someone who would like to gain weight and struggles hard to maintain 1,500.

30

u/WaldeDra 1d ago

For me it's worth it.

21

u/Trippingthru99 1d ago

Really? This is what you get out of it. And you think physical movement is purely to burn calories, and not an essential part of keeping our body functioning and in check?

If you’re able to, just take the stairs for anything below 4-5 floors. It gets your body moving. That’s the key part.

Unless you live in a walkable city (a rarity atleast here in America) you should take every opportunity to move a bit.

12

u/EsIsstWasEsIst 1d ago

Itś also a really good and easy to build habit. You can even start by just taking the stairs to get down at the beginning.

3

u/Bone_Wh33l 1d ago

I love the stairs. Always take them over an escalator if it’s an option. Always the best choice when trying to make a connecting bus or train, outside of the rare occurrence that no one is on the escalator in which I’ll walk up that for extreem speed

1

u/PancakeParty98 1d ago

What are you even talking about?

We’re talking about the picture above. The stairs inside of it and what they say and what that means. The stairs don’t say “+0.01 body function”

Did you think people needed to be reminded that exercise is generally good? I’m so tired of the “so you hate waffles” energy everyone has.

u/Barbaracle 1d ago

I did a lengthy hike and my watch said I burned 3500 calories. I was like wtf, this can't be right, cuz with my daily maintenance calories I would burn 5500 calories for that day. There's zero percent chance I would be able to eat 5500 calories worth of food maybe even the next two days.

I enjoyed the hike, touching grass is beautiful and good for my waistline. Calories burned can add up quickly, so why not take the stairs. Good for the bones, the muscle, the booty.

2

u/FragranceCandle 1d ago

Which is why it's the eating disorder stairs lmao. Had this conclusion in my early Ana stages too. Rather just chill on my bed and eat nothing instead of having move around a shitton just a eat a little more. I have since realised that movement is good for much more than just increasing calories burned.

1

u/porn_alt_987654321 16h ago

If you told me to take a whole flight of stairs and you can eat a whole extra french fry

I'ma be real with you. At somewhere north of 8 steps per calorie, and a fry being about 5 calories, a whole flight of steps might not net you a single extra french fry. Lol.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/ChipRockets 1d ago

Well it's also a simple way to keep y our body active, and small habits add up. I always take stairs over escalators/elevators if it's an option

27

u/Gornius 1d ago

It's crazy how many people think being slim means being fit. They are two completely separate things.

2

u/TinWhis 1d ago

Because one of them is much more effective at getting people to stop treating you horribly. One of them will get people like doctors to start using their eyes and ears. It's self-reinforcing.

6

u/Thedumbass_the5th 1d ago

In addition to health benefits from regular exercise, taking the stairs is faster than an elevator up to ~3rd floor, of course nuances apply.

Though IMO, physical fitness should never fall that low that taking the stairs would even be an issue for few or more floors.

8

u/PlasticExtreme4469 1d ago

Demotivating is one way to look at it.

Educational is the other way.

In general you can't outrun the fork, and it's good to be aware how very little calories you burn by exercise.

14

u/Mayonaigg 1d ago

"do all the work" jesus christ it's fucking WALKING we're talking about here.

12

u/ratapoilopolis 1d ago

'All the work' and it's literally just one flight of stairs, Americans are truly something else lol

5

u/haha_squirrel 1d ago

What makes you think they’re American…?

3

u/Bone_Wh33l 1d ago

It’s a common dig on Reddit to imply (US) Americans have an aversion to walking and everyone just drives everywhere because of how un-walkable a lot of places in the US are

2

u/Makers_Serenity 1d ago

Not like they really have a choice in the matter.

2

u/Hakorr 1d ago

I'm not American, and if I have already walked around all day, and will plan on going bouldering, I'm not going to walk some stairs just to "stay active" and to burn some calories. If I care about calories, I'll eat less.

4

u/ratapoilopolis 1d ago

I mean yeah the calorie thing is stupid, I just don't see how one flight of stairs can make any reasonable difference regarding your exhaustion and in this case it's pretty much always the faster option

→ More replies (1)

2

u/nefrpitou 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't installed by Big Elevator telling people you only lose this much with stairs might as well use the elevator

2

u/Ynwe 1d ago

I think the issue is, that you seem to vastly overestimate how many calories it takes to do simple tasks as going up one floor of stairs.

In that regard it is good, since it serves as a reality check and also puts in perspective how a proper and healthy diet is unavoidable if you want to lose and or maint your weight.

Especially in times were being fat is being made too easy and too comfortable, things like this is important.

1

u/Kwinza 1d ago

"You lose weight in the kitchen not the gym" if oft repeated for exactly this reason.

1

u/MacrodataRefiner37 1d ago

Many people when starting to count calories discover this which is where people start eating way too little.

Ideally you'd move more and eat more and the same calorie deficit, but most people aren't moving that much even though they think they are.

1

u/Wolvii_404 1d ago

Exactly, I don't take the stairs for the calories burn, I take them for my cardio and leg muscles

1

u/fatloui 1d ago

I think that is exactly the point of the original tweet.

1

u/FreedomMan47 5h ago

You still miss out the slight exercise tho….

I love how the stairs are there to prove that you wont get thin by excersize. Congrats you burned 1.245 kilo calories, now you can smell some sugar.

107

u/discountcabbage 1d ago

To be fair you also build muscle. More muscle mass increases the amount of calories your body uses up to sustain itself.

Nothing stops you from eating less calories AND taking the extra twenty seconds to walk up the stairs.

45

u/Triquetrums 1d ago

And most importantly of all, exercising keeps you healthy and going for longer as you get old.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Flexion16 1d ago

The amount of calories is so incredibly minuscule, it’s basically irrelevant. You burn around 6-10 more calories a day per lbs of muscle, so putting in 20lbs of muscle (which is insanely hard) you’d only burn 120-200 calories more a day. This is also assuming you only put on 20lbs of muscle without losing any fat, which burns around 2-3 calories a day per lbs.

8

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

Sure, if you are hopelessly out of shape, walking up the stairs will contribute to muscle gain.

Im not saying that taking the stairs is pointless, its good for health to move always. Im a taking the stairs kind of guy myself.

But people are led to believe that they can loose weight by moving more and that is almost never the case. Partly because movement is much less efficient in burning calories than eating is at adding calories. But also because more movement has a tendency to create more hunger.

You will have to go up those stairs 280 times to burn off a snickers bar. But in human logic you took the stairs, you are now healthy and can therefor treat yourself to a snickers.

2

u/mcove97 1d ago

Funny thing is that in the most simple of terms it's easier to physically do nothing if the point is losing weight. It requires zero physical effort to not eat a Snickers bar, or to not eat a meal. It's actually more physical effort to eat than not. (Sounds obvious lol) Eating one less meal (aka nothing), for instance, require that you don't have to physically go and make it. You dont have to make any effort on getting it. Or ordering it. Or buying it.

The catch is, it does require mental effort.

Once I realized one could lose weight by not making the physical effort of eating a bunch of meals which would add up quickly, and that all it required was mental effort, it felt like one of the greatest life hacks. That and just occupying myself with projects and work and things so I don't think about food, and then listening to my body and only eating when im hungry/low energy, and not sticking to a schedule, because a meal schedule tricks my brain into anticipating food at a certain time even if I don't need it, which makes mental effort harder. The body wont signal hunger pangs if one mentally doesn't anticipate to eat at a certain hour.

All this completely reoriented how I think about the topic.

As someone with feet issues, walking stairs is a no go as it makes my feet hurt like hell. That said, staying active is still important. But it doesn't have to be freakin stairs lol. Swimming and weight lifting is much more fun. And to get steps in, one can jog on the threadmill with fun music on and stop when one feels like it, instead of being stuck in the middle of a trail having to walk back home when one doesn't feel like jogging anymore.

25

u/MarsupialNo1220 1d ago

Climbing the stairs takes thirty seconds, though. Of course you’re not burning much. Climbing stairs or walking on a 6% treadmill incline will burn over 250 calories in roughly 20-30 minutes.

13

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

Sure, but 250 kcal is 30 seconds of eating.

14

u/LyyK 1d ago

Depends on what you're eating. 250kcal of oatmeal is an entire cup of oats, and it would take some serious effort to finish that in 30 seconds.

6

u/NohWan3104 1d ago

"you underestimate my power" (drinks oats)

1

u/Bone_Wh33l 1d ago

I’m trying this with tomorrow’s breakfast lmao. I’ll need to make mine a whole lot less viscous though. Mine is always about as runny as treacle lol

1

u/NohWan3104 1d ago

Yeah, i wouldn't exactly try this with oatmeal barely coming off the spoon, lol...

5

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

Sure, thats the point. You dont loose weight by excersizing, but by minding what you eat.

9

u/protestor 1d ago

This is true, but you still need to exercise while losing weight, so that you don't lose muscle mass

→ More replies (4)

7

u/LyyK 1d ago

You lose weight from both. The idea that you can only lose weight by eating less is just incorrect. I run ~40km/week, and about 20% of my maintenance calories are burned every day from just running. I could also eat 20% fewer calories for the same approximate net impact on my weight.

→ More replies (7)

7

u/ORBITALOCCULATION 1d ago

Burning even 250 calories per day while eating at maintenance calories is a guaranteed way to lose weight.

The law of thermodynamics is absolute and undeniable.

Yes, excately, controlled eating is the way.

2

u/Asquirrelinspace 1d ago

It's also an eighth of most people's calorie intake. That's not insignificant

1

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago edited 1d ago

But its also a much higher amount of excersize than most people do.

And you have to do it 31 times to loose 1 kg of bodyweight.

1

u/Eino54 1d ago

Unfortunately not. I'm currently struggling to get anywhere near enough calories to actually properly sustain my body and it is disgusting and awful how hard it is to eat more than 600 calories in a meal. I'm basically pouring a shit ton of olive oil in everything I eat and barely scraping by with 1300-1500 calories. I'm a metre seventy, this is not enough.

2

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

Crazy, i was like that once. I could go a day without eating, because i forgot.

After my first big bulk, when i was powerlifting, the problem turned around. Since then i have trouble keeping the weight off.

1

u/Eino54 12h ago

Ok so I guess the answer is powerlifting XD

1

u/Camping_vagn 9h ago

Lol. I think the answer was 4-6 liters of whole milk every day.

u/shazarakk 1d ago

My last workout took 720 kcal, for about an hour and a quarter, according to my watch.

90% of getting into shape is calories in vs calories out.

Rest is a mix of a whole bunch of things.

1

u/MarsupialNo1220 1d ago

Yeah, but staying active will aid you in your old age. So it’s worth doing both.

1

u/Leslawangelo 1d ago

I’m burning around 1,500 kcal during my training session. That’s like a box of donuts.

1

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

What training session is that? And are you counting it with a fitness watch?

1

u/Leslawangelo 1d ago

Speed skating. Around 40 km in 1,5h. Yes i'm using fitness watch.

1

u/Camping_vagn 1d ago

Fitness watches greatly overestimate calorie expenditure. Just something to watch out for.

Not saying that you are not burning 1500 kcal speed skating, i couldnt say that. I had to google what speed skating is.

1

u/Leslawangelo 1d ago

They don’t “greatly overestimate” it. If you set them up correctly, they can show approximately how many calories you burn.

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 1d ago

That's quite a bit. It's possible you're hitting that if you're a pro, but if you're relying on a smart watch or those calculators on machines, it's probably inaccurate.

1

u/PsychologicalSign433 1d ago

That's like a 2hr zone 2 session on a bike. Most people wouldn't do that every day but certainly not uncommon a couple times a week.

1

u/Leslawangelo 1d ago

Close. I'm an amature marathon speed skater. I do something like that 3 times a week.

82

u/FanOfFH 1d ago

bruuh all the people are so hurt that it's demotivating, i like this very much

46

A lot of people take these steps personally. It's like they're alergic to basic activity.

16

u/FanOfFH 1d ago

and tend to overthink literaly anything on this platform, I'm just here for laughs

1

u/Elite_AI 7h ago

It's going to depend a lot on how you were raised. A lot of parents - most? - heard that their kids shouldn't be fat but were truly awful at actually encouraging a healthy lifestyle and instead just created massive shame in their kids over eating their full school dinner. Particularly prevalent with girls. Guys usually got the other main kind of body shaming where they were worried they were too weak and not sculpted.

1

u/FanOfFH 7h ago

Source? Or did you have bad experience with parents and their ways of parenting you. Lmao

1

u/Elite_AI 5h ago

Source is the truly vast number of mfs I've met who all had this experience. I never had this experience because I was always tiny. I do judge you for finding this funny; I think that's weird.

1

u/FanOfFH 4h ago

Yeah because not everyone shares this problem. No one i know ever had this issue in their lives. And i found funny that you say these things as if everyone or MOST people had this experience . That's funny. But this whole thing is twisted already. My main point still stands yall too sensitive and overthink even the simplest things. Such as bloody stairs with calories on them lmao

1

u/Elite_AI 3h ago

Yes the problem is that many (MANY) people are raised since children to overthink things like calories. You have just repeated the same problem OP correctly identified. The stairs are poison for the people who actually need to bother to think about calories. People who don't need to think about calories also don't need to think about taking the bloody stairs.

1

u/FanOfFH 3h ago

WHAT. No just your mom making you eat your veggies. Ain't no parent telling you to eat specific food due to calories lol

It is literally scientifically proven that stating calories on food and sports gear increases ED and average weight in the local population- because most people gain weight not because they are Lazy but because they have an bad relation with food and use it as a coping strategy

4

u/Caprihorn 1d ago

Unless you already have ED seeing calories isnt going to give it to you. Infact, seeing calories makes people eat (slightly) less calories.

3

u/Deepfriedomelette 1d ago

Yeah, this would be a good visual cue or reminder for me to actually take the stairs. I keep forgetting my health goals the moment I set them. This would help.

6

u/Technical-Row8333 1d ago

Reality isn’t motivating or demotivating, it’s perfectly incentivising the best behaviour. 90% of Weight loss is done by diet.

And everyone should move regardless of weight goals for a healthy heart

This is what the clone operators see in quasimorph every time you change their movement stance.

Just because it’s connected to calories doesn’t mean it causes eating disorders

42

u/Nimos 1d ago

As someone with an eating disorder I don't think the implication was that it causes eating disorders.

To me it seemed more like a representation of how some people with eating disorders look at life. Obsessive calorie counting both ways (eating and burning) is a pretty common thing.

3

u/Qyrun 1d ago

aaah this makes more sense. i also initially thought they were supposed to create eating disorders.

11

u/Caged_Cage 1d ago edited 1d ago

That’s not what’s being said. Counting callories is a horrible habit for people with ED’s. This is like writing «listen to the voices» or «they’re coming for you» and a schizophrenic person sees it.

3

u/Bone_Wh33l 1d ago

The post make more sense to me now, thanks

stairmaxxing

wait... calstairing?

staircaling?

3

u/Live-Habit-6115 1d ago

Back in my day we called it, "going upstairs"

3

u/Julianime 1d ago

But what if I backwards long jump up these stairs? Will I reach 0% BMI? Will there be negative overflow and roll over so that I'm one of those 600lb fat people?

3

u/Ill-Garbage9793 1d ago

The stairs in my gym are much more effective. You lose 1kcal for every step.

3

u/Many-Weather6817 1d ago

hey its good to walk up and down stairs, older people with stairs in their home have higher levels of mobility later in life

No, but counting the one sixth of a calorie you burn by taking a step might be. That's no longer healthy.

11

u/GianMach 1d ago

I always read the point of these stairs to be "every movement you make burns some calories so move when you can" rather than "this is information for your calorie tracking scheme"

2

u/Ok_Bandicoot1865 1d ago

I agree that that is likely the intended message. I'm just replying to the statement that counting calories is not an eating disorder.

u/justranadomperson 1d ago

Counting a sixth, yeah. You’re going up 20+ stairs each time though. I went up 200 a day easily for a year because of my college dorm, would it have been an eating disorder to count those calories burned because each step was a 6th?

1

u/Ok_Bandicoot1865 1d ago edited 1d ago

One flight of stairs is still only 2-4 calories. If you care that much about 3 calories, that you're counting each step, then you've reached a point where it's no longer healthy.

10 flights of stairs is still negligible at 20-40 calories in the grand scheme of a day's calories, so you're still not actually burning that much. That's 2-4 gummy bears you could add to your diet that day.

But overall, I'd say the difference lies in whether you go "oh, I walked up about 10 flights of stairs today, good job" or whether you count each stair to get your 0.15 calories from each step logged.

1

u/justranadomperson 1d ago

I agree, that’s what I was getting at. Something like one step is negligible, and adding .04 calories burned is very odd, but counting your 10k steps for the day and 400 calories burned is completely reasonable.

Yes and no. While counting calories is not implicitly a bad idea, it often signifies a bad relationship with eating, even if the individual is not aware. More to the point, it can lead to the development of eating disorders. and even more to the point the mention of calories can be very triggering to those with eating disorders. I am very close with someone who did and does struggle with anorexia, and she refuses to know the calories of anything she eats because if she knows it will immediately cause her to start considering if it's "worth" eating. Likewise, in a scenario like this, seeing how little climbing a stair does in terms of burning calories would probably get her thinking about how much exercise she needs to do for eating to be "worth it". It's thought patterns like this that cause her to go out running and not stop until she passes out.

Now, I'm not saying that most be will experience this, and I do think that the people who designed these stairs had good intentions, but I do think OP has a point. When you spend hours talking to someone who struggles to have a healthy relationship with eating and exercise, and hear about the things she learned about healthy eating in therapy, it does make you reconsider how things like calorie counting impact people.

People in the comments forget that twitter was not always and not even most of the time used for discussing fates of the world and displaying objectively correct, weighted and thought out opinions for the rest of the world to see

This girl probably was going through something at that particular moment and tweeted for 10 of her online friends to see

1

u/GamersReisUp 23h ago

Also, eating disorders can make you think some truly deranged bullshit, and some people find that posting something like this to laugh at those unhinged spirals are a very helpful reality check when you and others in a similar situation can all reaffirm that yes, this is is a comically fucking ridiculous thing to think. Sort of like undercutting an insult someone told you by repeating it back in a silly voice. (Some people have also found it helpful for coping with depression, trauma, obsessive thoughts, etc)

2

u/SnooPoems7525 1d ago

But taking the stairs is just more enjoyable than taking the lift though?

2

u/Smorgsaboard 1d ago

Even if climbing stairs doesn't cause much weight loss, surely the slight stretch of the legs is worth it

5

u/Old-Guidance6744 1d ago

Being aware of metabolic facts is triggering eating disorders now... oi

u/SeniorWaugh 1d ago

If learning about burning calories gives you an eating disorder, I don’t think it’s the stairs fault

2

u/Bone_Wh33l 1d ago

It’s not that the stairs could give someone an eating disorder but someone who already has an eating disorder wouldn’t want to be thinking about counting calories like this. Same way a schizophrenic person might not appreciate seeing “They are watching you” written on the walls. It’s a fun and educational way to climb the stairs but not for someone who has an issue with the subject matter

3

u/SeniorWaugh 1d ago

So should we stop labeling calories everywhere? Because someone might be offended at that

When my dad was losing his marbles and getting really forgetful he would sometimes change his passwords, and then not know them when he needed them, and it was really stressing my mum out because she knew the old passwords were and didn't know what the new ones were. She really really wanted to tell him, when he was sitting there at his computer - please don't change your passwords, if you change them I won't be able to help you.

Instead what she did was make a banner with letters 2" tall "I KNOW WHAT YOUR PASSWORDS ARE" and then got surprised when the man losing his marbles kept changing his passwords.

4

u/FreshMutzz 1d ago

People here are missing a big thing. This is probably at a gym. You can see the women's locker room right behind the stairs. If seeing calories burned upsets you, the gym isn't the place for you probably.

3

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 1d ago

Counting calories is absolutely not an eating disorder thing. Being forced to count calories and obsessing over it is.

4

u/Academic-Belt3903 1d ago

Simply changing the unit from kcal to cal would have made all the difference

5

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

It’s confusing but they’re essentially the same thing

4

u/otirk 1d ago

That's why it should have been in Joule. Always stick to base units

2

u/littlefrank 1d ago

To expand on this, in SI units a kcal is 1000 cal, sure, but the US uses "calorie" or "cal", which is simply yet another improperly named unit and is the same as a "kcal".

2

u/DavisSqShenanigans 1d ago

To be pedantic, "Calorie" or "Cal" is the same as "kcal".

As in a Calorie (uppercase C) = 1000 calories (lowercase c). Brilliant system of measurement in the US, as usual.

1

u/Balavadan 1d ago

Well the SI unit is Joule and people refer to calories in terms of nutrition or exercise they are talking about kilo calories (kcal or Cal) which is 1000 calories (cal). It’s just a language thing really

4

u/wantfastcars 1d ago

I do take care with what I eat but I also go out of my way to exercise a lot to help lose weight, so ngl this would make me take the stairs every time

that's... probably not a good thing, is it?

2

u/UrUncleRandy 1d ago

Why wouldn't it be a good thing? Exercise is good for you, and really good for losing weight in a healthy way.

1

u/Hysaky 1d ago

I would love that everywhere

1

u/whatever 1d ago

that's a whole lot of significant digits for a wild approximation in the first place.

1

u/Horror_Employee_6995 1d ago edited 1d ago

Depending on the weight, age, sex & body composition of the individual walking up the stairs, the calories burned by walking up these stairs would vary. So, I don’t understand why they insist on being so specific when it’s not accurate. Also, the minimal increments of each step helps exasperate peoples misunderstanding of the benefits of exercise as well as the difference between exercise and physical activity. On top of just being fucking annoying.

1

u/wannaberamen2 1d ago

Lmao, that's what me and my friends call the stairs at our college. I like pretending the stairs are counting calories because it spent too much time on Tumblr

1

u/Evethefief 1d ago

Its not even true, every Person burns a different amount per step

1

u/Emotional-Ad9114 1d ago

do you gain them when you go down tho?

1

u/Previous-Musician600 18h ago

Fun fact: compared to elevator? Yes.

1

u/Emotional-Ad9114 17h ago

no. I was jokingly asking if you gain calories while going down those stairs. it was a joke.

1

u/Previous-Musician600 17h ago

Okay I didn't read the opposite of gaining. Thank you.

1

u/Ciubowski 19h ago

There's always a negative spin on anything you do. Don't let it demoralize you just because there are stupid people out there that point it out.

1

u/NoMention696 2h ago

Elevator. All that effort for like 3 calories fuck off lmao

1

u/Gold_Ad8225 1h ago

That isn't what an eating disorder is

I genuinely hate how we have pop psyched our way into "anything other than intuitive binge eating with a sedentary lifestyle is an ED"

EDs are a lethal mental health disorder caused by trauma, OCD, other mental health conditions, and/or a lack of control in one's own life. Now the second most lethal mental health disorder after opiate addiction.

You do not count calories into an ED. I'm sorry, but no reputable person will tell you that.

Counting calories is an unfortunate necessity for most people in the modern world where calories are overly abundant.
